Internet Research Resources for Historical Writers
By Greg Knollenberg There is no question that the Web contains more information on current news and events than any other medium. It also contains a large and growing amount of historical reference material. This material covers everything from archaeology to modern American history. As with most online research, the key to historical research on the Internet is knowing where and how to search. Writers and researchers need to take special care with historical reference information to ensure that historical dates, facts and figures are accurate. Keep a core list of sites at your disposal through bookmarks that you trust so you can check or validate any information you find. In addition to facts and figures, historical websites can also be a source for detailed information about the living conditions and lifestyles in a given time period. This article will guide you to some of the best general historical resources and sites from which you can find more historical resources on your own. Finding Historical Resources The most common method for finding historical information is to use a search engine or directory. For information on using search engines, be sure to read "

Novelists discuss historical research in fiction writing By MATTHEW HENRY
Avalanche-Journal Novelists had some surprising news Thursday for students tired of endless hours of research who want to start writing. Research is the fun part, they said. ''The biggest hazard of research is finding a quitting place,'' said Elmer Kelton, who's written 40 Western books. ''It's fun to research,'' agreed Jeanne Williams, the winner of four awards for her Western novels. ''You can go on researching forever and never get to your book.''vtna Kelton, Williams and Preston Lewis, Texas Tech's director of Library Development and External Relations and president of Western Writers of America, led a symposium on historical research in fiction Thursday morning. The event was part of a week of events celebrating Texas Tech's new Southwest Collections/Special Collections Library. Lewis said he rushes through writing his books as quickly as possible.letnn Because he considers himself a better editor than writer, he frequently chops out 40 percent of his manuscript during revisions. The novelists said they have a variety of ways of conducting their research.

Previously, I wrote about the ethics of attempting to write historical fiction using shoddy research and I could almost hear some of you saying, "That's easy for her to say. She probably lives within walking distance of some huge library."  Right?  Wrong.
The bulk of my research was done when I lived 9 miles from the nearest town and 11 miles from the nearest library, when Bill Gates was still in diapers. And I have never had a driver's license.
What I did have was an enthusiastic librarian who taught me about the wonders of Inter-Library Loan. Through ILL, one can get just about any book from nearly anywhere, and sometimes half the fun is seeing where the books come from. I once borrowed a book on Feminist Witchcraft from a library in Yazoo, Mississippi.  Who'd a thunk it?

Christy Award is to recognize the excellence of historical research and writing done while the researcher was in a doctoral student status. The Cadet Nurse Corps Award recognizes excellence of historical research and writing done while in a masters program. The Lavinia L. Dock Awards recognize outstanding research and writing produced by an experienced scholar in nursing history who submits, most often, a post-doctoral research manuscript, article or book. And the Society for Nursing History Award is given for post-doctoral work.

The Writing of a Historical Essay or Research Paper
Whether you are writing an in-class essay exam or a 20-page research paper, there are some basic guidelines which you should keep in mind. The first part of this handout gives general information which is relevant to the writing of any historical essay. The second part gives tips which you should utilize in writing take-home essays, exams, and research papers.
Writing an Essay
An essay is not simply a list of facts. You must organize the facts into themes which support a central argument or thesis. This thesis should be introduced in the beginning of the paper and developed throughout the paper one step at a time. The stronger your thesis, the easier it will be for you to develop a strong argument. Use an outline to organize your thoughts in a clear, coherent and logical manner and to guide you in writing the essay. Organizationally, the essay has three main parts:
  • Introduction . Use the introduction to state your thesis, outline the main points you will make in the essay, and describe the conclusions which you will draw in the essay. History essays are not mystery papers; the reader should know from the beginning what your conclusions are. Use the introduction to draw the reader into the essay. Often it is easier to write your introduction
