Five Common Mistakes in Writing Lesson Plans
(and how to avoid them ) Dr. Bob Kizlik Updated March 4, 2003 Successful teachers are invariably good planners and thinkers. They didn't get that way overnight. The road to success requires commitment and practice, especially of those skills involved in planning lessons, activities, and managing classroom behavior. Planning lessons is a fundamental skill all teachers must develop and hone, although implementation of this skill in actual teaching can, and usually does, take some time. So let's begin at the beginning. In my career as a teacher and teacher educator, I have read and evaluated thousands of lesson plans written by education students at all levels. On a consistent basis, I see mistakes that distort or weaken what the plans are supposed to communicate. If you are serious about improving your skill in planning lessons, you should begin by first thinking carefully about what the lesson is supposed to accomplish. There is no substitute for this . In teaching students how to develop lesson plans, the following are mistakes I have observed that students make most often:

We have received a number of requests from AISI (Alberta Initiative for School Improvement) coordinators who are looking for lesson plan sites. We will begin to list sites which we hope offer quality lesson plans. Some sites are curriculum specific, while others offer a variety of lesson plans in all subject areas. If you find a good site, please email us at dcford@ualberta.ca so that we can link to it. If you discover that one of the sites that we have linked to is simply not helpful or if the link is no longer working, please let us know. How to search the Internet: We suggest that you begin by bookmarking the following Internet Oracle Search Engine page: http://www.searchgateway.com . Here you can link to most of the major search engines. If you want to restrict your search primarily to Canada, then we recommend linking to the Canadian version of Alta Vista at http://www.altavista.ca or Yahoo Canada at http://www.yahoo.ca Check out our Searching for Sanity on the Internet web presentation. This site gives you step-by-step search tips, direct access to search engines, online journals, libraries and more.

Mistakes in writing lesson plans and how to avoid them Nip your problems in thebud! Lesson Plans the Easy Way! A different take on writing lesson plans.

Lesson Planning and Lesson Plan Ideas Dr. Bob Kizlik
Updated March 4, 2003 Lesson planning...who needs it? Well, maybe you do! Lesson planning is a special skill that is learned in much the same way as other skills . It is one thing to surf the Net and retrieve lesson plans from other sites. It is quite another thing to have the skill to develop your own lesson plans. Acquiring this skill is far more valuable than being able to use lesson plans developed by others. It takes thinking and practice to hone this skill, and it won't happen overnight, but it is a skill that will help to define you as a teacher. Knowing "how to" is far more important than knowing "about" when it comes to lesson plans, and is one of the important markers along the way to becoming a professional teacher.. This is among the most popular pages on the ADPRIMA web site, and for good reason. Good lesson plans do not ensure students will learn what is intended, but they certainly contribute to it. Think of a lesson plan as a way of communicating.
