The English Teacher
Lesson Plans for a Creative Writing Course
*This page contains the complete lesson plans for a thirteen week course in creative writing which I taught for Lane Community College for 22 years, most recently spring quarter, 2002. The longer units in this lesson plan are designed to develop specific skills in a certain order during the class. The shorter units can occur in a different order in the class than given here, according to the teacher's experience and preferences. Some of these units are presented in more or less detail on individual pages on this website. When you view the students' writing samples, please use the -back button- on your browser to return to your place in these lesson plans. Writing 241
* Work on reading skills so that students can present their writings in the best manner. All the assignments except the first one using Haiku's are presented orally by the students before they turn them in. Therefore they need to have their assignments completed by the due date. If the teacher lets the students volunteer, it causes a better class spirit, but some students may put off finishing on time because they rely on others to volunteer. All assignments are to be typed except those written in class and as journals. UNIT: HAIKUS Haikus are underestimated in their challenge and value as a writing assignment. I assign only two or three. When possible, I assign them the week before spring break so the students can work on them over the vacation. Haikus are intended to convey a Clear Picture [Mental Image], a Distinct Emotion, and a 'spiritual' Insight. I don't work much on defining 'spiritual' but simply confine it to an 'aha!' or 'light goes on' experience. This assignment requires very little writing but requires much thought and focus and if done correctly, the benefits carry on to longer assignments.

Home Teacher for Hire First Year Urban Teacher Links for Teachers As a new teacher and as a student teacher, you are required to develop lesson plans. Even if your boss or supervising teacher wants to see a brief summary of your plan, you will still, in some way, be required to submit your teaching plan in writing. Every lesson, every subject you teach, will be recorded via lesson plan. Therefore, it's a good idea to fully understand the elements of a good lesson. It is a general statement included normally at the beginning of a unit, which describes what you expect the students to learn. Goals are used for long-term planning (units).

Overview
This series of lesson plans is designed to help you introduce reading and creative writing activities in a fun way. You can conduct the unit in as little as one week or optimally over a several week period. The length of time you need for the unit will depend on how many of the assignments and other activities you pursue.
In this unit, you will introduce the student to the limerick and other zany rhymes made famous by Edward Lear in the 1850's. The lessons use these limericks to introduce a number of basic poetic devices. Understanding and using these devices can improve the students general writing. They also serve as models for teaching the disciplined, systematic art of limerick and poetry writing.
All of the sessions use material found in books by Edward Lear that are a part of the Animated Artist Series. However, since these poems and limericks are in the public domain you may find them in a variety of books and may also find additional examples that you can use in this unit.
Objectives
After following this unit, the student will:

Writing Lesson Plans and Evaluating Students:
Mini-Job Analysis
Natalie Watts
Introduction
As a student of education, I learned of the importance of tasks such as writing lesson plans and evaluating students. However, being inexperienced, I was mostly concerned with discipline. When required to write a paper on the concerns of experienced teachers, I learned their greatest concern was the great amount of paperwork that had to be done. As a teacher, I am now concentrating upon many tasks and I am interested in what my colleagues believe are the important aspects of their job. Therefore, my mini-job analysis is on job of a high school teacher.
Determination of Task List
I generated the first list myself relying upon work participation for my knowledge. To verify my list, I asked a teacher, who attended the same education cohort as I did, to generated another list. The results are as follows: First List Second List Prepare Lesson
Deliver Lesson
Evaluate Understanding
Discipline Students
Contact Parents
Record Grades
Record Attendance
Provide Feedback Take Attendance
Discipline Students
Maintain Classroom Prepare Materials Calculate Grades Support School Activities Be a Positive Role Model Take Classes to Keep Up to Date The revised list is a combination of both lists with the elimination of redundancies. For better understanding, I organized the list into a sequential relationship.
