Lesson Plan
Teachers are always on the lookout for story starters or writing prompts to use as student writing motivators. Following are ten such prompts. You can use a single prompt for each of ten classroom writing periods or give students all ten prompts at once and allow them to choose the one they want to respond to.
  • Sometimes people do things over and over again before they are successful. Dr. Seuss, for example, sent his first book to 27 publishers before it was accepted. Write about how you or someone you know succeeded because you or that person kept trying.
  • If you were asked to select an item to place in a time capsule, what would it be? Choose an item that exemplifies the culture of the early part of the 21st century. Explain the item's use and significance, and justify why your item should be included in the time capsule.

    87. AVOID THE PITFALLS OF MEDIOCRE LESSON PLANS
writing down your thoughts beforehand clarifies your lesson. Often effective teacherswant to show others their plans to tell others of the good
    http://www.usask.ca/education/ideas/stuteach/pitfalls.htm
AVOID THE PITFALLS OF MEDIOCRE LESSON PLANS
    Don C. Barnett
Good lesson plans makes for good teaching. A lesson plan organizes what you will do and say in the forthcoming lesson. Also, it provides an opportunity for other people such as your college supervisor or cooperating teacher to discuss with you ideas about the lesson. The amount of detail in a written lesson plan depends upon the complexity of the lesson and upon your own experience and background. A good lesson does not guarantee the teaching of a successful lesson, but without a clear plan the chances for success are greatly diminished. In general, beginning practice teachers find it helpful to write out their lesson plans in detail, whereas more experience should require fewer details. The first pitfall to avoid is a bad attitude. Remember that good teaching is a reflection of good planning. Writing down your thoughts beforehand clarifies your lesson. Also, remember that others have expectations that teachers are organized, even if they know their subject or have taught it before. If you ask a contractor to build a house, we expect that person to show us a written house plan, even though he may have built hundreds of houses. Principals, directors of education, and parents have the right to have similar expectations of the teachers of their children. Often effective teachers want to show others their plans to tell others of the good job they are doing.

    SPRING KITES: PARTS OF SPEECH
    GRADES: 1-5

    MATERIALS:
    • construction paper of various colors
    • scissors
    • pencils and glue (or tape)
    • templates of paper kites and bows

She will initiate a discussion naming the parts of a kite, and why they are necessary. The teacher will then tell the students that they will be making kites with special words on them.
  • Together in a large group the teacher will begin a discussion about words the children know from their word wall. The teacher will write on the chalkboard People-Places-Things.
  • The teacher will ask students which of their word wall words are people, and she will write them under that word on the chalkboard.
  • The teacher will ask students which of their word wall words are places, and list them like she did the people.
  • The teacher will continue with thing words.

Writing Lessons Writing Lesson - Non Defining Clauses
This intermediate level lesson focuses on introducing and / or reviewing defining and non-defining relative clauses. Exercises include a recognition and punctuation drill as well as a text expansion exercise. Interesting Writing: Descriptive Verb usage
One of the most important steps in improving writing skills is expanding the use of more descriptive language when describing actions. This lesson focuses on getting students to use more descriptive verbs in place of common, general meaning verbs. Writing Informal Letters
Getting students to understand the differences between formal and informal letters is an important step towards helping them master differences in register required for writing in English. These exercises focus on helping them improve their understanding of the type of language that is used in an informal letter. Short Writing Topics
The idea of this exercise is to get students to quickly write about a topic they choose (or you assign). These short presentations are then used in two manners; to generate spontaneous conversations on a wide range of topics, and to take a look at some common writing problems.
