Willing Surrender:
the Politics of Writing Romance
Introduction When the manila folder containing my mother's unpublished romance novel arrived in the mail, it came with a few scraps of memorabilia in it: an encouraging note from me "Mom! A definite best-seller. (This will sell! ) I want more ... write! E.W." and two Harlequin romance novel covers I designed, with the appropriate teasing captions, titles, and Harlequin symbols in their upper left corners. Re-reading the captions transported me back eleven years, to a time when, it seemed, I lived and breathed the Harlequin romance. For the novel cover I had titled, Love Me, Cowboy, I contrasted the heroine's professional success (as a singer) with her success in romance, the built-in assumption being that The Relationship was what really mattered. Pamela walked on stage, breathless. 'This song is called, 'Love me, cowboy ...' she began. A cheer broke out in the crowd. Bob Harrison smiled and urged her on. She sung the ballad in a clear, sweet tone, her voice quivering with emotion toward the end, and when she was finished, glistening with sweat and exhausted, she heard the crowd cry for more. She smiled. After all, no one knew her heart was really breaking... Harlequin-flavored rhetoric had crept into my writing almost unconsciously, so that even my most casually written notes betrayed that perky, feisty, plucky heroine's voice. On the romance novel cover titled

ROMANCE
Writing Romance
By Prue Eckett
You’ve read all the paperback romances there are and you think, “It can’t be that hard to write one. They only take a couple of hours to read. And think of all the lovely money.’Love and kisses etc - you figure you have the formula down pat. All you need to do is write the damn thing and send it off to one of the many romance publishers dotted around the planet.
But have you noticed that the same few author names crop up all the time? This is because it takes a lot of experience and talent to write a romance that flows easily and simply. Those little paperbacks that you can read in your lunch break come from extremely skilled writers who have learned to make it look easy. And for the several hundred writers whose work makes it into book form, there are several million who apply again and again, and never get published.
But there are tricks of the trade that give you a better chance. Firstly, there are many different types of romance writing. Once upon a time you could have the stereotyped timid girl and the lord of the manor. This genre, generally known as Regency romance is still popular and many publishers have a line devoted to it. Reading the queen of Regency Georgette Heyer, is obligatory if that style appeals to you. You will speedily find that her heroines are anything but timid and can give the modern emancipated girl a run for her money. And her research was impeccable on the life styles, clothing, manners, places and people of the time. Unless you are as meticulous, you will find that this oversubscribed type of romance writing will be extremely hard to succeed at.

... Site Map An interview with Sarah Winn, of Raleigh, North Carolina, the author of 'The Silver Heiress.' She says writing romance novels has forced her to get more closely in touch with her feminine nature. What type of romance novels do you write? Historical romance. How long have you been writing romance novels? I've been dabbling at it for fifteen years. I got serious about it five year ago. How did you first become involved with writing romance novels? I've wanted to be a writer for as long as I can remember, but didn't know what to write. I tried mainstream and mystery, but they didn't fit. During an illness, someone brought me an early Rosemary Rogers' historical. After reading that, I not only became hooked on reading romance but decided it was what I could write. What is it about you that makes you able to write romance novels? What type of talent, thought process, and creative intuition is needed to write a really good romance novel? I've always made up stories in my head. I was called a day- dreamer as a child. I like to solve puzzles, and plotting is mainly puzzle-solving.

... Site Map Jo Beverley, author of 19 historical romances, including "Forbidden Magic" and "Secrets of the Night" talks about what it takes to write a truly great romance novel. You can contact her at http://www.sff.net/people/jobeverley or jobeverley@poboxes.com How did you first become involved with writing romance novels? What prompted you to enter this field? Growing up in England, I was more exposed to romance novels, and I always wanted to write them but didn't know how. When we came to Canada I tried again, but put it aside to raise children. Then I went to a talk about writing romance in 1983 and really got going. What is it about you that makes you able to write romance novels? What type of talent, thought process, and creative intuition is needed to write a really good romance novel? Difficult question. I have a degree in English and good language skills, which helps. I also seem to be a natural storyteller. Even the story I wrote at 16 has promise, and the one I wrote at 30 was later published without many changes. I think storytelling ability is very important, and also an ability to get into different personas and, sometimes, other ages and places.

19. Mary Kirk's Writing Tips
you're a romance author, and you’re committed to writing rape or bondage scenesbetween the hero and heroine, my advice to you is to give up writing romance.
http://www.active-voice.com/MaryKirk/WritingTips.html
Writing Tips If you have a question about writing, send it to me.
I’ll do my best to address it on this page.
This month’s tip is about what I believe is the most important thing a person who aspires to write genre fiction needs to learn. If you “get it,” you’re halfway toward publication. This is a test.
  • What is the Prime Directive of every romance author? What is the single most important factor in defining the boundaries of the romance genre? What is the chief influence on romance editors' decisions regarding manuscripts that are under consideration or being edited for publication?
There is one answer to all of the above questions, and it is not debatable: reader expectation. So, what constitutes a romance reader's expectation of the books she buys? The same expectations that apply to all genre fiction: first, that the protagonists will be heroic in stature and, second, that they ultimately will triumph. Specifically, in romance, "heroic in stature" means having morally sound goals and aspirations, not behaving in petty ways, and not deliberately hurting the object of affection, either emotionally or physically. "Triumph" means that the hero and heroine, through their love for each other, prevail against the conflict separating them and, in the end, walk off into the sunset together. So, what do you do if your fantasies aren't shared by millions? It depends upon how far out they are.
