I'm still recovering from tendinitis in both arms, so Inkygirl postings are likely to be sporadic for the next while. Meanwhile, however, here's some news about a new writing challenge on Salon: Hi Debbie, We?re testing a new method for collaborative writing. Can you help us notify writers? Unfortunately, this request is very last-minute, as we begin next week. http://blogs.salon.com/0001633/ The Words' Worth Writing Challenge is an "emergent" writing system designed and managed by Two Piers Innovations. Using readily available technology, Words' Worth coaxes creativity through a motivational and supportive collaborative environment. The Words' Worth objective is to produce a high-quality work of short fiction and to reward its creators accordingly. Its long-term goal is to establish an ongoing environment that routinely produces creative works of value while delivering instructive and monetary rewards to participants. Thanks

66. The Romance Reader Interviews Bonnie Vanak
I started writing romance to escape the emotional pressures of my job. I lovemy work, but needed a diversion. I started writing romance novels.
http://www.theromancereader.com/nf-vanak.html
New Faces 138: Bonnie Vanak
by Cathy Sova Welcome to our New Faces column, where we are delighted to introduce some of the newest romance authors in the genre. This time we're visiting with Bonnie Vanak , whose first historical romance is The Falcon and the Dove from Leisure Books. Bonnie, welcome to TRR! Tell us about yourself. I'm really the reincarnation of an ancient Egyptian priestess who was born in Randolph, NJ and forced to assimilate into American society. Seriously, I was born in Randolph and moved to Florida when I was still in high school. I live in Florida with my husband and two Shih Tzu dogs, Tiger and Tia. My dogs devour romance novels. Tiger has chewed up a few of my paperbacks. Are you coming to romance writing from another job? I work full-time as a writer for a major international charity and travel to developing countries. I started writing romance to escape the emotional pressures of my job. I was in a Haitian slum and all these hungry, desperate children crowded around me, plucking at my clothing, pleading for something to eat. It's horrible because you must leave them behind, when all you want to do is scoop them up into your arms and take them with you. I love my work, but needed a diversion. I started writing romance novels. There's a scene in FALCON where Jabari rescues a little boy from starvation. That character is partly based on a child I met in Nicaragua. He haunted me so much that I wanted to write a happy ending for him. I don't know what happened to the real child. I'm afraid to find out, because that part of Nicaragua is experiencing famine and children are dying.

68. Writing The Multicultural Historical Romance
6. writing romance, Vanessa Grant, SelfCounsel Press. 7. GUIDE TO FICTION WRITING,Phyllis Whitney, The Writer, Inc. writing romance by Vanessa Grant.
http://www.viviansnotebook.com/writing/tips/ht_multicul.htm
Writing the Multicultural Historical Romance by Cheryl Ferguson Nothing is more exciting than finally discovering that unique time period in which your multicultural historical novel can be placed. Congratulations. But, that's only the beginning of your journey to writing the Multicultural historical romance. One of the first issues you must address is research. Researching the period well is essential. The work is exhaustive, especially if you know nothing of the period you've selected, but, if you love history, half the battle is won. There is a shortcut you can employ. Discover who the authoritative historians are on the period and look for the books they've written. Please note that shortcut is not synonymous with cutting corners. You will still have to verify information, cross reference facts and follow a bibliographic trail that will be extensive. The payoff will be you've focused your research with the help of the best minds in the field, which will go a long way in establishing your own credibility with editors and readers. Another critical phase of research is coming to an applicable understanding of the customs and mores of the period. It's not enough to know a custom existed, you must also know why it existed and when it came into existence. In understand the customs of the day, the writer begins to understand the minds of the people who lived in the era.

A MOST UNEXPECTED MARRIAGE Victoria Fontaine's mischievous nature and brilliant, biting wit have scandalized the ton ...and earned her the nickname "Vixen." But her reputation pales before the infamous Lord Althrope's, known as "Lord Sin." The years Sinclair Grafton spent on the Continent have done nothing to quell the rumors about his past. And when the stunning Vixen and the handsome rogue find themselves momentarily alone at an elegant gala, their passion gets the best of them. Caught by Victoria's father in a shockingly sensual kiss, Sin and Vixen have no recourse except a wedding. At first the very liberal lady relishes the thought of an unfettered marriage to an indifferent, unrepentant scoundrel. But she suspects there is more to this enigmatic, remarkable man, that his rakish persona is merely a pose. And after one unforgettable night of ecstasy, Lady Vixen is determined to unmask the true Sin...to satisfy a passionate heart that craves far more than freedom. Indulge and be delighted! -

A STRAIGHTFORWARD GUIDE TO
WRITING ROMANTIC FICTION
Over the years, I've run many workshops or courses on how to write romances for writers' groups, literature festivals, and other events. On these occasions, I'm often asked many of the same questions, and there seem to be a number of things that keep cropping up that would-be writers want to know. Because of this, I wrote the Straightforward Guide to Writing Romantic Fiction, in which I tried to answer the questions I get asked most frequently. The book is now in its second edition and the new version has been revised, updated and expanded. All the original material is there, but I've also added my Twelve Point Plan to Writing Romance together with a Question and Answer session I did on the 5 Ws (Who, Where, When, What and Why) of Writing Romance . This is reproduced by permission of eHarlequin on whose site - www.eHarlequin.com - it originally appeared. The Straightforward Guide is intended to provide information and advice for anyone who wants to learn how to write Romantic fiction. It gives a short introduction to all the essential skills needed to succeed, from initial research to the final submission of the typescript. The book covers the following topics:
  • Creating sympathetic heroines Portraying irresistible heroes Writing effective dialogue Inventing readable plots Working from different viewpoints Putting in sensual scenes Beginnings and endings Finding the right setting Submitting your typescript

I have now add the final chapter of "Fate?"

I hope you all enjoy it as much as I did writing it.
I plan to update this section of my site more with other completed fanfiction.
But it is a slow go. Sorry.
LAST UPDATE:
I'd like to appologize to those who have viewed my
Nora's page and found things "wrong". I doublechecked and for some unknown reason the images are just not working (i.e. Rising Tides, the code is correct, the image was not.). I have hopefully now fixed that problem and updated everything while I was at it. I have updated several of the pages, including my NORA page. More soon! Recently, I have added "Fate?, The Sequel" to my Roswell Fanfiction. And to advertise another project (off my site), a new chapter has been added to Terescia's Round Robin Challenge over at Terescia's site More updates soon!

I'll be be giving short workshops on various subjects, then members are invited to ask questions and discuss how that applies to their own work in progress, or a book they've just read. It'll be very loosely structured in order to keep it user friendly and hopefully encourage participation. Since we're working toward publication, members are also invited to post news of contest entries, RWA Pro pins they've received, any helpful conference workshops they've attended, etc. This site has won the Study Web of Excellence Award! TIPS FOR ASPIRING WRITERS Note: These writers' tips are exactly that - tips. They are not rules, not even guidelines. They are merely suggestions. Writers are as individual as our stories and we all have different ways of creating our books. If my ways don't work for you, you'll undoubtedly find your own through trial and error. On the other hand, I'll be delighted if something I've said on this page helps you tell your own story.

77. The INTERNET WRITING WORKSHOP
Join various mailing list workshops such as poetry, fiction, flash fiction, romance, novels, and nonfiction. Post and receive critiques of work, plus critique other works. Discuss the finer points of writing.
http://www.manistee.com/~lkraus/workshop/index.html
Internet Writing Workshop WHAT IS THE INTERNET WRITING WORKSHOP? The Writing Workshop exists for two primary purposes:
  - To create an environment where Works In Progress can be passed around and critiqued, to help us improve these works and to improve as writers.
  - To give people interested in writing professionally a support group  where information can be shared and various aspects of writing can be discussed.
The Workshop is open to all styles and genres of writing:  literary fiction, genre fiction, poetry, children's writing, essays, newspaper articles, scripts, you name it.  Members do not need to be published writers, only to be serious about writing and about wanting to improve.
Because these are workshops, membership is restricted to participating members.  Group or anonymous memberships are not allowed.
The key word in the Writing Workshop is "Workshop".  Every member is expected to take an active part in the proceedings.  We are here to become better writers, not to watch each other.  If you don't take an active part in these lists, you will be dropped from the membership.
Works are submitted for criticism only.  Submission is not considered  publication.  The fact that the list membership consists of active,  participating *writers* acts to support this consideration.
