It encompasses national forest, Grand Teton National Park and the National Elk Refuge. The valley floor is between 6,200' and 6,800'. To the north, Jackson Hole is bordered by Yellowstone and is elsewhere surrounded by more national forests. The towns of Moose, Kelly and Wilson are also in Jackson Hole. The Teton Range Rocky Mountain landscapes typically offer picturesque views, but few are more impressive than the Teton skyline. The Tetons are the youngest of the Rockies. The range was born some nine million years ago by intermittent, but violent, seismic activity. Because of the way the mountains formed, no foothills hide Jackson Hole's jagged peaks and broad canyons. At the base of the range, large lakes mirror the mountains on calm summer days, doubling their prominence. Prior to the 1820s, Native Americans referred to the mountains as "the Hoary Brothers." Later, they were known as "the Pilot Knobs." Around 1920, however, French Canadian trappers named them "Les Trois Tetons," or "The Three Breasts."

    Abbreviation:
WY Wyoming gets its name from the Algonquin words for "land of vast plains." After the Union Pacific Railroad reached the town of Cheyenne, the capital, in 1867, the population began to grow steadily in the Wyoming Territory, established in 1868. In 1890, Wyoming became the 44th state. The constitution of the "Equality State" was the first in the world to grant voting rights to women. Wyoming was also the first state to elect a woman governor. People are spread out across the state in small farming and ranching towns. Wyoming's tourist attractions are among the most spectacular and well-known in the nation. Each year, millions of tourists visit Yellowstone National Park (the world's first national park). The most notable features of the park include active geysers, spectacular towering waterfalls, hot springs, deep canyons and excellent fishing. Wyoming also is home to Devils Tower, the nation's first national monument, and Grand Teton National Park, the site of some of the West's most beautiful mountain scenery.

    Geography
Exactly rectangular in shape, Wyoming is traversed by the Rocky Mts., which angle south across the state from the northwest. East of the mountains is the rolling country of the Great Plains, a mile-high region covered with grasses and sagebrush and interrupted by the upward thrust of mountain ranges. In the center of the state is a stretch of unbroken high plain, across which the wagon trains rolled westward over the Oregon Trail . In the extreme northeast the low, wooded Black Hills give way to eroded badlands extending west to the banks of the Powder River, which wanders through some of the most famous cattle country in the United States. West beyond the Powder is tallgrass country that was the hunting ground of the Crow until the migrating Sioux pushed the Crow westward into the mountains. The Sioux fell in turn before the relentless advance of settlers, and today farms and ranches occupy this fertile and beautiful plains area. In SE Wyoming the higher tablelands are interrupted by the Laramie and Medicine Bow ranges. Across this region travelers to the Pacific coast made their way when wars with natives in the 1860s made the Oregon Trail hazardous. The railroad followed paths of these wagon trains when the Union Pacific laid its tracks along this more southerly course. In SW Wyoming is the natural gateway through the Rockies: the broad, grassy South Pass. Immediately north of the pass is the Wind River Range, reaching the highest elevation in the state at Gannett Peak. Still farther north rise the Gros Ventre and Absaroka ranges, and to the west, near the Idaho line, the glorious Tetons loom above a lake and valley country of renowned beauty.

    http://wais.stanford.edu/geography_ofdesertificationwyoming5602.html
    Back to Index
    The geography of desertification. Wyoming
From the heartland of the US, Miles Seeley says: "Justin Carreno's report is somewhat puzzling to me. My parents had a place in Jackson Hole from 1949 to 1991, and I lived and worked there for 17 years; my son went to the University of Wyoming. It doesn't seem any more dry than it ever has been in our lifetimes, although of course rainfall varies from year to year. Sagebrush has not ever been called "short grass" in my experience. [See my footnote. RH.]. The reason Wyoming has so many cattle and sheep ranches is that the land isn't much use for anything else. Ranchers, in my opinion, are mostly environmentalists. They know that overgrazing will destroy their ranches, and they are careful, most of them, not to. A very large portion of Wyoming is Federal land, Bureau of Land Management and Forest and Park Service. Management of those lands has been erratic. The high plains of southeastern Colorado, and the wheat farms of western Kansas, are another problem entirely. As Wallace Stegner used to say over and over, western lands are fragile because of scant rainfall and a thin layer of soil. Overdevelopment, he warned in the 1940s, could be catastrophic. I think he was a prophet. Without massive irrigation (which drains the water table) the high plateau will not support agriculture. Even then, it is difficult". My comment is of dubious worth since I have only a hazy idea of sagebrush, which gets its name from sage, a sweet-smelling herb. I don't think Justin said it was called short grass, but that it is like short grass. While the term is commonly applied to the gray-green shrub of the plains, the big sagebrush grows almost like a tree. Sage (salvia) grows in many places; there are some 700 species. The sage which provides scent grows in the Mediterranean area. There are tropical forms of sage in Brazil. It would take a sage to master the complexity of salvia.
