Wyoming, state, United States
Geography
Exactly rectangular in shape, Wyoming is traversed by the Rocky Mts., which angle south across the state from the northwest. East of the mountains is the rolling country of the Great Plains, a mile-high region covered with grasses and sagebrush and interrupted by the upward thrust of mountain ranges. In the center of the state is a stretch of unbroken high plain, across which the wagon trains rolled westward over the Oregon Trail . In the extreme northeast the low, wooded Black Hills give way to eroded badlands extending west to the banks of the Powder River, which wanders through some of the most famous cattle country in the United States. West beyond the Powder is tallgrass country that was the hunting ground of the Crow until the migrating Sioux pushed the Crow westward into the mountains. The Sioux fell in turn before the relentless advance of settlers, and today farms and ranches occupy this fertile and beautiful plains area. In SE Wyoming the higher tablelands are interrupted by the Laramie and Medicine Bow ranges. Across this region travelers to the Pacific coast made their way when wars with natives in the 1860s made the Oregon Trail hazardous. The railroad followed paths of these wagon trains when the Union Pacific laid its tracks along this more southerly course. In SW Wyoming is the natural gateway through the Rockies: the broad, grassy South Pass. Immediately north of the pass is the Wind River Range, reaching the highest elevation in the state at Gannett Peak. Still farther north rise the Gros Ventre and Absaroka ranges, and to the west, near the Idaho line, the glorious Tetons loom above a lake and valley country of renowned beauty.

    Geography Field Courses
Geography has long enjoyed a tradition of field study, and many geographers consider field work to be an essential skill in their trade. VU Geography is pleased to embrace this tradition through its many exciting field study opportunities. In addition to the numerous field trips conducted as a part of courses like Geomorphology and the Regional Geography of the United States, the Department offers a number of individual field courses under the GEO 385/585 listing. Indian Reservations Yellowstone
The past several Spring Breaks, VU field courses have visited the Sonoran Desert in southern Arizona (including Saguaro and Chiricahua National Monuments), the Grand Canyon (and other national park sites in Arizona, including Canyon de Chelly and Petrified Forest), the major Indian mound sites of the South (including Cahokia, Russel Cave National Monument, and Etowah), and the volcanoes and lava flows of the Big Island of Hawaii. In the summer of 2001, a group from VU toured the eastern half of the historic Oregon Trail, following its course into Wyoming. There the group visited Yellowstone National Park and Devils Tower National Monument before returning east via the Black Hills and Badlands of South Dakota. This summer promises more field course opportunities, and plans are already underway for two exciting outings!

ackson Hole Area Geography Located in northwest Wyoming, Jackson Hole was named for Davey Jackson, a fur trapper and mountain man who frequented this area in the early 1800's. Originally called "Jackson's Hole" the "hole" referred to a high valley amid a mountain range. The ranges that surround Jackson Hole include the Gros Ventre (pronounced Grow-vahnt) Mountains to the east, the Teton Range to the west, the Wyoming Range to the south and the Absoroakas to the north. Jackson Hole is also just 45 miles from the south entrance of Yellowstone National Park, the world's first national park, home to an abundance of wintering wildlife including buffalo and wolves. Downtown Jackson has the largest concentration of hotels, restaurants, shops and entertainment in the valley. It is also the county seat for Teton County. The town square in Jackson captures the feel of the old west with western shops, places like the Million Dollar Cowboy Bar, and its wooden sidewalks. The photo albums of prior visitors to Jackson are sure to include a shot under the elk antler arches on each corner of the square.

FASCINATION with the Earth and the desire to learn and record information about it, inspired the early explorers of our land, and has continued to inspire Wyoming citizens and visitors to our diverse state. The opportunity and knowledge to enjoy our beautiful landscapes in great part owed to these inspired individuals. WYOMING is a unique state spanning the spectrum of landscapes from towering mountains, vast grasslands of the plains, green valleys, and open prairies. We are fortunate to have a diversity of natural resources and a rich cultural heritage. GEOGRAPHY today offers perspectives and information about the location of these diverse landscapes and their composition. Also, insight into the interactions of people with their environment, and the changing distribution of people and wildlife which accompanies growth and progress. WE are concerned with strengthening the continuing efforts in geographic education to increase our knowledge of the world around us and the impact we have on our world. FOR THESE SIGNIFICANT REASONS, I, JIM GERINGER
