Teaching Multicultural Young Adult Literature of the 90s
This is a database of teaching materials about young adult novels by African American, Asian American and Hispanic American authors for readers between the age of 15 and 18. The material has been developed by students at the University of Giessen, Germany, in the course of a seminar on multicultural young adult literature.

Description of the Course
From Animal Farm to Lord of the Flies , the English foreign language classroom in Germany is still dominated by a focus on a rather restricted canon. Young adult literature is one viable alternative to traditional literary texts. In the 1990s a large number of young adult novels have been published in the U.S. that deal with multicultural issues reflecting the changes in American society. While most of these texts are by now easily available in Germany via internet bookshops, there is hardly any teaching material on the market that would help teachers use these texts in the classroom.
We believe that the university can play a role here in making material available to teachers that is otherwise hard to come by. At the same time the creation of teaching material can be an important issue in pre-service teacher training, thus facilitating the reflection of theories on teaching literature in the foreign language classroom by future teachers.

INTRODUCTION Young Adult Literature is often thought of as nothing more than teen romance or adventure amusing stories with little literary merit. There is, however, a substantial body of Young Adult Literary Fiction that deals with the issues and difficulties of making the transition from childhood to adulthood. This Infoguide includes sources that discuss the use of Young Adult Literature to encourage reluctant readers to read for pleasure, as a bridge to more classic literature that is traditionally taught in secondary classrooms, and as an interdisciplinary tool to encourage discussion across the curriculum on a broad range of issues. Also included are resources for teenagers such as online collections of writing by young adults, and book reviews by and for teenagers.

This excellent bio-critical series provides brief biographical sketches of authors followed by lengthy excerpts from published criticism of the authors' works. Though the series focuses primarily on writers of adult-level materials, some volumes (see Volume 26, for example) are devoted exclusively to children's and young adult authors. Crossover authors who appeal to both adult and young adult readers (e.g., Amy Tan, Maya Angelou) are scattered throughout the series' volumes. A cumulative index to authors appears at the end of each volume.
