Basic facts about the Archives of Yugoslavia
Founding, status and purview of the Archives of Yugoslavia The first initiative for the founding of the Archives of Yugoslavia and the adoption of a law to regulate its powers and purview, was launched by the Board of the State Archives in Belgrade (the current Archives) as far back as in 1922. The preparation and actual drafting of the bill lasted until 1935 but no law was adopted, so that the idea of founding the Archives of Yugoslavia did not materialize in the period between the two wars. After World War II, in 1950, the General Law on State Archives was passed. The Archives of Yugoslavia was founded under this law, under the name STATE ARCHIVES OF THE FEDERATIVE PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF YUGOSLAVIA. The direct application of federal regulations and the General Law on State Archives were of particular significance for the collection of archival material and for the Archives of Yugoslavia, which started official operation in 1952, i.e. early 1953, when the FPRY Government appointed the first director. In the period immediately following its founding the State Archives of FPR Yugoslavia, headquartered in Belgrade, worked under the supervision of the FPRY Ministry for Science and Culture and/or the Council for Science and Culture of the government of FPR Yugoslavia, and in 1953 it started operating as an autonomous federal agency under the name

The Mostar Bridge:
rebirth of an emblem
CRIMES AGAINST CULTURE
Colin Kaiser, cultural heritage expert, former director of the UNESCO office in Sarajevo.
A church destroyed in Croatia during fighting around Lipik.
The Mostar Bridge: rebirth of an emblem It took no more than 30 minutes for Stari Most (“The Old Bridge”), the emblematic symbol of Mostar’s multicultural past, to be destroyed by bombardment from a Croatian army tank on November 9, 1993. Completed in 1566 after nine years of work, the bridge, designed by the Ottoman architect Mimar Hayruddin, once rose high above the emerald waters of the Neretva, connecting its east and west banks.
The 29-metre-long stone arch bridge, a World Heritage site, gave the town its name and stimulated its blossoming from a tiny medieval settlement to a thriving trading centre that attracted merchants and travellers from across the region. This is where local couples romanced and young men dove into the river below in a famed annual contest. At the outbreak of the war, inhabitants cushioned the bridge with car tyres in an attempt to protect the structure. It was first damaged in 1992 by Yugoslav Army shelling.
And Mostarians are already preparing to see their city’s emblem resurrected. More precisely, the party begins on September 15, 2004 at 5 p.m., a date chosen in the midst of the war by Mostarian architects whose life work is now dedicated to rebuilding their town.

DAYS OF culture OF BELARUS WILL BE HELD IN yugoslavia. Despite escalationof tension around the situation in Kosovo and a real possibility

DAYS OF CULTURE OF BELARUS WILL BE HELD IN YUGOSLAVIA.
Despite escalation of tension around the situation in Kosovo and
a real possibility of striking at Yugoslavia, this country
government is busy preparing to hold the days of culture of
Belarus in the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. They are planned
for 5-10 April. This fact is an indirect confirmation of Belarus'
complete solidarity with the Yugoslavian people during their hard
times and that this country is an adherent of a peaceful
settlement of the conflict in the Balkans.
    A project of the inter-governmental Belarussian-Yugoslavian
agreement on co-operation in the sphere of culture and education for 1999-2001 is ready. The document is planned to be signed in Belgrade in the course of the forthcoming visit of an official delegation under the lead of vice-premier Vladimir Zametalin to Yugoslavia. The agreement provides for holding of a number of concrete measures. Among them are exchange of specialists and students, organization of tours, participation in various festivals, co-operation of archives, libraries, higher schools

Yugoslavia: Saudi Wahhabi Aid Workers Bulldoze Balkan Monuments
By Jolyon Naegele Last week, construction workers in Kosovo bulldozed the 18th century facade of a library and a 16th century Koran school that Serbian forces damaged during fighting last year. The construction workers were not Serbs, but employees of a Saudi Arabian reconstruction agency, and were armed with official permits rather than Kalashnikovs. As RFE/RL correspondent Jolyon Naegele reports, this was not the first time war-damaged Islamic monuments in the Balkans have been destroyed in the name of fraternal Islamic assistance. Prague, 4 August 2000 (RFE/RL) The Saudi bulldozing of some of the most historically valuable architectural monuments in the western Kosovo market town of Djakovica is merely the latest in a series of iconoclastic activities in the Balkans undertaken in the name of reconstruction assistance by Arab aid organizations. War-damaged historic buildings are not repaired, but rather demolished to make way for what the Arab donors consider to be more proper Islamic structures. The destruction is a further blow to Kosovo's architectural heritage, following the destruction by Serbian forces and civilians in 1998 and 1999 of over 200 mosques and other Islamic structures about one-third of the total number in the province.
