What's the Difference Between a Province and a Territory?
Canada has a constitution - the Constitution Act of 1982. The constitution talks about all sorts of things, like what our official languages are and what our individual rights are. The constitution works together with our system of laws to make up the rules of the country. The constitution also indicates what provinces are a part of Canada and what the powers of those provinces are. For example, provinces have jurisdiction over education and the environment. Territories on the other hand are created by Federal Law. That means the territories have a bit less power than the provinces. They still have representation in the federal government, but don't have provincial governments. The biggest difference is that the provinces get to vote on changes to the constitution but the territories do not.

It is composed of ten provinces and three territories. It is bounded on the western edge by the Pacific Ocean, on the northern edge by the Arctic Ocean, on the eastern edge by the Atlantic Ocean, and on the southern edge by the United States of America (USA) . The edge running between countries is called a "border". In Canada, the country of the United States of America (U.S.A.) is either called "the States" (as in "We're going to the States for the weekend") or "the U.S." (as in "There's no public health care in the U.S."). If you want to enrage a Canadian then go ahead and refer to the States as "America". After all, Canada is in North America and so is Mexico A popular symbol of Canada is the mountie. A mountie is a member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (R.C.M.P.). Their fancy dress uniform is brilliant red as illustrated in the photo taken on Parliament Hill, Ottawa on Canada Day. Canada Day is July 1st and is Canada's birthday. It used to be called Dominion Day.

Field Research in Northern Canada
(GEG 4001)
The theme of the field course is geomorphological processes and recent environmental change in the Kluane Region. This is a 6cr course which IN 2002 can be assembled from a number of components. There will be three components concentrating on lacustrine environments, fluvial processes on alluvial fans, and snow and ice stratigraphy and glacier mass balance. Each component will be a 3cr module and students may assemble their 6cr package.
Lacustrine Environments
The marl lakes of the Kluane region are dominated by carbonate sedimentation produced in the water column as a result of CO2 exchange between the atmosphere and carbonate rich water. The high carbonate content in the lake water is due to groundwater input from glacial deposits with a high dolomite content. Objective is to investigate environmental change over the last 1200 years from an analysis of the sediments and macro-fossils in closed basin marl lakes. The 1200 year level is defined by the White River Volcanic Ash stratigraphic marker. Sediment core stratigraphy; carbonate content and crystal form, organic content; and loess content will be measured; and macro and micro fossils will be examined.

Yukon Territory: Geography and Climate The triangle-shaped Yukon territory is bordered on the N by the Beaufort Sea of the Arctic Ocean, on the E by the Fort Smith and Inuvik Regions, Northwest Territories, on the S by British Columbia and Alaska, and on the W by Alaska. The highest point in the Yukon is Mt. Logan, 19,850 ft (6,050 m) high, part of the Coast Ranges in the southwest. Although most of the territory is a watershed for the Yukon River and its tributaries, the northern and southeastern regions drain into the Mackenzie River system. Immediately south of the desolate arctic coast the country is uninhabited and generally unknown. The other parts of the territory have great natural beauty, with snow-fed lakes backed by perpetually white-capped mountains and forests and streams abounding with wildlife. Kluane National Park (est. 1972) is in the St. Elias Mts. Winters are long and cold, with low humidity. During the short summers the longer day and surprisingly warm sun bring a profusion of wild flowers and enable the hardier grains and vegetables to mature. The few settlements are situated on the riverbanks. The capital and largest town is
