"Ad limina Apostolorum": Zimbabwe Bishops' Conference July 7, 1992 Elements of African culture can be fitting vehicles for the Gospel On Tuesday, 7 July, the Holy Father received the Bishops of Zimbabwe in audience to conclude their ad limina visit. The Pope addressed them in English about some of their concerns and the needs of the Church in Zimbabwe.
Dear Brother Bishops, 1. I have eagerly looked forward to this meeting with you, the Bishops of Zimbabwe , on the occasion of your ad limina visit, and I greet you with the words of Saint Paul: "My love be with you all in Christ Jesus" (1 Cor 16:24). In welcoming you, I embrace the clergy, the men and women religious, and the lay faithful of the Archdiocese of Harare and the Dioceses of Bulawayo, Chinhoyi, Gweru, Hwange and Mutare, and in a particular way the new Diocese of Gokwe. Please assure them that the memories of my visit to your country in 1988 have not grown dim. I am grateful to Bishop Reckter for his kind words, and I send a special greeting to Bishop Muchabaiwa and pray for his full recovery. Your presence testifies to the communion in grace which binds you, in the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church, to the Bishop of Rome, the visible focus of unity in every age. In making your pilgrimage to the tombs of the Apostles you renew your conviction that the concrete historical reality which is the Church traces its origins back to the Twelve and to our Lord Jesus Christ himself, who established this living Body as the channel and instrument of the salvation he won for us in his death and resurrection.

Monday 20 , May Countrywide events to mark Culture Week
    5/20/02 11:34:01 AM (GMT +2)
Entertainment Reporter The National Arts Council of Zimbabwe (NACZ) has lined up various activities in all the provinces to mark Culture Week, which begins today. Culture Week is organised to celebrate World Culture Day and Africa Day – days proclaimed by the United Nations and Organisation of African Unity respectively to review, reflect and celebrate national artistic and cultural heritage.
The council has decided to make it a week-long event to allow arts organisations, associations and stakeholders to organise events with an impact on their communities.
Titus Chipangura, NACZ director, said: “We felt a day was too short to make a lasting impact on the people of Zimbabwe.
“Since Zimbabwe is a multi-cultural society, the council felt it would play a co-ordinating role and allow associations, organisations, schools, companies and individuals to plan and implement activities that are consistent with the theme of the week.”
This year’s Culture Week theme is Celebrating The Unity In Diversity Of World Arts and Culture.

Saturday 27 , April Schools to start teaching minority languages, culture
    4/27/02 10:04:02 AM (GMT +2)
From Our Correspondent in Bulawayo The government of Zimbabwe has now publicly committed itself to the teaching of what it generally refers to as minority languages. The languages will be introduced into the primary school curriculum from Grades 3 to 7. The programme is expected to start running this year until 2005.
The decision to introduce the languages programme was announced through a document titled Secretary’s Circular Number 1 of 2002 issued to schools during the week ending 12 April 2002.
Headed “Policy Regarding Language Teaching and Learning”, the document states, among other things: “ These are languages that are spoken by a relatively small indigenous group in various parts of Zimbabwe.”
The languages include Kalanga, Tonga, Venda, Nambya and Sotho.
The communities in which these languages are spoken, especially the Tonga in the Zambezi Valley, have always felt marginalised because their languages were not recognised.
However, the Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation has been catering for audiences which speak the languages through their various radio programmes, particularly on Radio 4.

THE ANCIENT CIVILIZATION OF GREAT ZIMBABWE
The great and mysterious kingdom of Great Zimbabwe flourished between the 12th and 15th centuries. The impressive ruins of this once thriving city (an important World Heritage Site) represent the largest stone structure in Africa south of Egypt's pyramids, and will astound visitors with their sheer scale and grandeur. Although it is clear that this was a great African civilization, researchers understand very little about its origins and decline, and not much at all about the people who lived here - no human remains have ever been found in close proximity to Great Zimbabwe. This sense of mystery lends the immense ruined city a very romantic air, and one can't help but speculate, while wandering through this fascinating complex, if only the great stone walls could speak, what secrets they could tell!

The Natural History Museum in Bulawayo embraces a comprehensive library and exhibition galleries. Its world-renowned collections relate to Entomology (insects), Geology, Herpetology (reptiles and amphibians), Ichthyology (fishes), Mammology, Ornithology (birds), and Paleontology (prehistoric life forms). In public galleries are some exhibits portraying the history of Zimbabwe. Zimbabwe Museum of Human Sciences in Harare houses a library, exhibition galleries, and a model Shona Village, in addition to holding ethnographic and archaeological collections. Wildlife exhibits are on show in public galleries. Mutare Museum is a large collection of antiquities that include early forms of modern technology. The transport gallery portrays the history of that sector in the country, while the public galleries show animal and plant forms peculiar to the Eastern Districts, as well as the cultures of the people therein. Gweru Museum is essentially a military and police history museum. A new development is the Aviation Museum, which houses both military and civilian aircraft, and is expanding to reflect the country’s history in that field. Gold Mining Museum, Kwe Kwe depicts through mining antiquarian, the history of the gold mining industry from the earliest times to date. At the same venue is the Paper House built of paper mache and wire mesh walls. It is the sole survivor of three such buildings constructed in 1895. National Monuments
The Great Zimbabwe was declared a World Heritage Site in 1986. It was known for its grandeur as early as the 16th century when its existence was made known to the outside world by Portuguese. It is spread over 720 hectare area, and comprises an impressive array of dry stone structure that divides into three groups: the Hill Complex, which is a series of stone-walled enclosures set among boulders at the top of an 80 metre high wall; The Great Enclosure, a massive wall 255 metre circumference, 10 metres high and 5 metres wide in parts; the Valley Complex, from which the carved Zimbabwe Bird, now the country’s emblem, was found.
