Travel Center Country Guide: ZIMBABWE Business Culture Greetings and Courtesies Decision Making GREETINGS AND COURTESIES A handshake is the standard greeting to be maintained while an often lengthy discussion ensues concerning your family and health. Only very good friends hug on greeting, and women and girls often curtsy. It is considered rude to look elders in the eye when greeting them. Refrain from using a Zimbabwean's last name until he or she has used yours. DECISION MAKING Progress is slow in arriving at important final decisions, as everyone seems to require the authorization of someone else. Accountability can be lost in the shuffle. Persistence and patience are essential here. In general, decision making is a group process, and everybody involved must reach some sort of consensus. For this reason, it is especially important to establish and maintain excellent relationships with business contacts at all levelseach one of them may help to facilitate a positive outcome. The UK annexed Southern Rhodesia from the South Africa Company in 1923.
A 1961 constitution was formulated to keep whites in power. In 1965 the government unilaterally declared its independence, but the UK did not recognize the act and demanded voting rights for the black African majority in the country (then called Rhodesia). UN sanctions and a guerrilla uprising finally led to free elections in 1979 and independence (as Zimbabwe) in 1980.
Robert MUGABE, the nation's first prime minister, has been the country's only ruler (as president since 1987) and has dominated the country's political system since independence.

Useful information

The San were the first people to inhabit Southern Africa and around 30,000 fascinating rock art sites can be seen in present day Zimbabwe. Around 2,000 years ago it appears that San tribes began to keep small numbers of livestock and to plant grain so limiting their nomadic lifestyle. Pottery and iron smelting also began here at around this time. Between 200BC and AD1000, Bantu tribes migrated south into the area, largely displacing the San.
The 10th century saw the first signs of an embryonic Shona society developing on the central plateau region of modern Zimbabwe. These first foundations led to the growth of the first major Shona State. Historians are unsure whether the forefathers of the Shona had arrived in the Bantu tribe migration, or whether they originated from San tribes who settled into a less nomadic life. Cattle ownership increased, as did skills enabling the Shona to produce iron tools. Gold mining led to contact with Arab traders from the coast and steadily the wealth increased. This status enabled cattle barons to establish a complex settlement at Great Zimbabwe, at the crossroads of seasonal grazing areas. At its height, Great Zimbabwe was home to 40,000 people and an army was employed to guard the cattle. The site was only occupied for around 300 years, and by 1450 the area had been abandoned, probably due to drought, overpopulation and exhausted supplies of firewood.

Lonely Planet Lonely Planet guide to Zimbabwe and the world Order Now
Zimbabwe Culture Artists are highly esteemed in Zimbabwean society and a greater percentage of artists make a viable living from their trade than in most other countries. In fact, Zimbabweans seem to take a measure of artistic talent for granted. Traditional arts, most of which are still practised, include pottery, basketry, textiles, jewellery and carving. Perhaps most notable for their quality and beauty are the symmetrically patterned woven baskets and stools carved from a single piece of wood. Shona sculpture, a melding of African folklore with European artistic training, has been evolving over the past few decades. One recurring theme is the metamorphosis of man into beast, the prescribed punishment for violations such as making a meal of one's totem animal. Most of the work is superb and a few Zimbabwean sculptors are recognised among the world's best. Zimbabwean's mesmerising music has always been an important part of its cultural life. African legends are punctuated by musical choruses in which the audience participates, and social events (such as weddings, funerals, harvest and births) are each accompanied by unique songs. Traditional musical instruments include the marimba , a richly-toned wooden xylophone and the mbira , a cute plinky-plonky device more commonly known as a thumb piano. The oddest percussion instrument used in Zimbabwe are the

Mbira: A Musical Immigrant from Zimbabwe
Ethnomusicologist traces its origins and impact in the U.S. By Jessica Allen
Washington File Staff Writer Washington – Mbira may not be a household word to the average music fan but this unique Zimbabwean music is slowly making its way into the African-American culture, said ethnomusicologist Professor Ernest Brown of Williams College in a telephone link with aficionados at the Book Café in Harare during the launch of a new CD. The program to discuss the introduction and impact of Mbira music in the United States was sponsored by the Public Affairs Section of the U.S. Embassy in Zimbabwe. In his opening remarks, Professor Brown said, "Usually when we talk about the relationship between American and African music we are talking about the legacy of the slave trade, but with Mbira, that is not the case." In fact, Mbira has taken a surprisingly academic route to the Americas, he said. According to Brown, the history of Mbira in the United States is "born of a genuine interest" resulting from recent increased interaction between Americans and Zimbabweans, "because there were very few, if any, slaves who came to America from Zimbabwe." Slaves and slave culture were not the origins for the arrival of Mbira in America, said the professor, but "improved communications, greater travel opportunities, and an increase in immigration" have brought the Zimbabwean music to the United States.
