Press releases
Brussels, 30 March 2001 FMD: Zoo animals to be vaccinated under certain conditions A meeting of experts took place today in Brussels to consider how certain rare and endangered species in zoos could be protected if an outbreak of foot and mouth disease would create an emergency situation. The participants agreed that all possibly measures, should be taken to avoid introduction of disease and subsequent necessity of killing of endangered susceptible species for disease reasons. In principle, none of the experts was against vaccination of endangered species in certain circumstances. But they clearly underlined that certain technical and legal uncertainties related to the vaccination of endangered species call for a cautious approach to vaccination of these animals. The current risk of introduction of FMD into zoos and animal parks should not be overestimated. It is however significantly higher in those regions where FMD is present in livestock. Therefore all disease prevention measures should be strictly applied irrespective of the use of vaccines in those premises. Internationally accepted animal health standards for trade set by the OIE do not specifically cater for such a particular situation. All experts underlined therefore that the use of vaccine in an animal park or zoo would affect the FMD status of an area/country and trade partners might not accept exports of live animals and non-treated products from that area or country where vaccination against FMD has taken place.

THE SIXTH ANNUAL CONFERENCE OF THE SOUTH EAST ASIAN Z00S ASSOCIATION
MELAKA, 22-25 OCTOBER 1996
COMMUNIQUÉ VI
2. Mr. Abd. Rashid Samsudin, the Deputy Director General of the Department of Wildlife and National Parks Peninsular Malaysia, represented the Director General for the opening ceremony. He thanked the Honorable Minister of Science, Technology and the Environment Malaysia for attending the opening ceremony in spite of the tight schedule. He congratulated the Organizing Committee for a well-organized conference and expressed his hope that the conference would be fruitful and successful. He urged all organizations that have not joined SEAZA yet, to do so to strengthen co-operation among zoos in the region. He said that an ever increasing pressure on land during the last decade had resulted in loss of habitat that caused several wildlife species to become endangered. This has resulted in zoos having to play a more important and proactive role in ex-situ conservation. 4. The opening speech delivered by the Minister of Science, Technology and the Environment Malaysia, emphasized that the role of zoological parks has changed tremendously over the years. From the early days when providing recreation for visitors was their main aim, zoos have shifted to their modern emphasis on ex-situ conservation. The shift was due to the fact that survival of most animal species in the wild is threatened, especially by the pressures resulting from human development of natural areas. Therefore, the role of zoological parks as conservation institutions is becoming more prominent. Zoo education programs also contribute to disseminating conservation messages to visitors. The Minister believes that these efforts should be maintained and where necessary enhanced for the benefit of future generations.

The Mother Road W Highlighting native and exotic desert animals, the park is home to 450 animals, representing 125 different species. The cinereous or European black vulture has a wing span of more than nine feet and is as large as the California condor. The animals are retained in open enclosures, often displaying indigenous plants, rocks and trees for a life-like environment. The open enclosures also give visitors a closer look at many of the critters than they would get at a larger animal park. Between animal enclosures, visitors walk through lush, full-scale botanical gardens representing 10 different desert ecosystems. The habitats are interspersed with specialized gardens and wildlife native to each region. From the Chihuahuan desert in Mexico to the arid regions of Africa, plants from the agave to the umbrella thorn (eaten by rhinos and gazelles) and Kokerboom quiver tree (a South African tree reaching 30 feet tall) can be found at the park. Those interested in our own native plant and animal species should journey through Eagle Canyon. Exhibits here feature mountain lions, badgers, golden eagles, bighorn sheep, peccary and coyotes.
