Joe Maynard, President

Larry Purcell, Vice President

Nicole Pearson, Treasurer

OF THE SOUTH EAST ASIAN ZOOS ASSOCIATION (SEAZA)
(Amended in Taiping, Malaysia, 11 October 2001) CONSTITUTION PREAMBLE
We, the South East Asian Zoos Association (SEAZA), is an organisation devoted to the conservation of wildlife, and to the display of wildlife for public education; Believing that every biological species has a right to survival, that humans have an obligation to protect that right, zoos in developing countries are obliged to educate and motivate citizens to care for wildlife and to help preserve their regional biological diversity; Desiring to carry out this obligation by managing animals under our stewardship in conditions that promote their individual wellbeing, genetic diversity of their populations, preservation of their taxa, and conservation of their natural ecosystems, we will strive to:
  • Exhibit animals to the general public in ways that will educate the public at the same time it provides them with a pleasurable leisure-time activity, and that will foster in them respect and empathy towards animals and natural ecosystems; Conduct benign research into the biology and behaviour of species in our care, especially as it will contribute to our ultimate goals of conservation and education;

    General Information
    The Tropical Data Base (Base de Dados Tropical - BDT), is an information center housed at the Fundação Tropical de Pesquisas e Tecnologia “Andre Tosello”, a not-for-profit, private Brazilian foundation. Recognizing the need and importance of local and regional database developments, BDT has established an interactive biodiversity/biotechnology information resource and users network. As major activities, BDT is involved with the collection, analysis and dissemination of data relevant to biodiversity and biotechnology, and with the development of software for data management. BDT began its work in 1982 with microbial strain data and information on Brazilian culture collections. Throughout the years, 3 editions of the National Catalogue of Strains were published, a national survey on Brazilian culture collections was carried out, and a successful training programme was established. All information has been available on-line since 1985. The importance of this experience is its uniqueness and its success. It is a case where collection, organization, storage, and dissemination of data, is directly responsible for the formulation of a national policy for culture collections and for the organization of a scientific community conscious of the importance and of the role of microbial culture collections.

39. Zoocheck Canada Inc. - Prairie Zoos Report
parties work together, we cannot help but improve conditions in the zoos ofAlberta and Saskatchewan, and perhaps raise the bars for zoos in general.
http://www.zoocheck.com/programs/zoocheck/Prairie/PZfore.shtml
Foreword For a number of years, the World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA) and Zoocheck Canada have investigated conditions in zoos throughout Canada. These investigations have resulted in a series of recommendations for improvement directed at zoological institutions themselves, as well as a variety of government agencies and elected officials. In many cases, these recommendations have resulted in tangible animal welfare improvements for captive wildlife and, in several instances, the closure of grossly substandard facilities. During the summer of 1998, we turned our attention westward to examine conditions in a representative sampling of zoos in Alberta and Saskatchewan. As part of this investigation, zoo consultant Marilyn Cole examined the relevant provincial legislation respecting captive animal care in the prairie provinces. As a veteran zoo keeper with 22 years of experience caring for animals in an accredited zoo environment, Ms. Cole offers, along with her findings, a series of recommendations for Alberta and Saskatchewan’s prairie zoos WSPA and Zoocheck hope that the owners and managers of the facilities listed in this report will review Ms. Cole’s recommendations and give them serious consideration. As a former zoo keeper, she is well aware of the challenges facing modern zoos. While she is critical of certain aspects of the facilities she visited, she also identifies a number of aspects that she feels should be commended.
