Built in 1818, the General Post Office in O'Connell Street was designed by Francis Johnston.
In 1916 an Irish republic was proclaimed from the General Post Office by Padraig Pearse and James Connolly who were leaders of the Easter Rising.
A fire broke out, destroying most of the interior and the General Post Office was closed until it was renovated in 1929. At the front of the building visitors can still see the shell marks of 1916.

WELFARE - We can all do our bit!
Animals and Man
By Christopher Day MRCVS
Animal welfare is a much-debated topic. No end is in sight for some of the awful welfare penalties that animals suffer, as a result of man’s interference. Is there anything, however, that we can do, ourselves? There is the general environment problem, affecting a great many species and soon to affect man himself, more seriously than he’d like to believe. There is competition with man, for much-needed space and food, especially in the Amazon, Africa, South East Asia and India. These are general problems, that must be addressed, especially in terms of how the developed world treats the undeveloped world. Your influence, as a customer of the banks and multi-national companies, can have an effect for the good. The issue about which we can each certainly do something, on a much more personal level, is that of respect for animals. Respect, at a deep and meaningful level, removes the issue of whether animals have ‘rights’. It puts the issue of ‘do we have the right to do what we do?’ more firmly in the limelight. We would not need to legislate or to ask whether something is legal, if we were to be guided in our actions by true respect. With the recent Foot and Mouth Disease outbreak, we saw the terrible holocaust and animal suffering, being enacted in the name of commerce. Animals were dispatched in front of their offspring. Animals were badly shot, owing to the sheer size of the task, and surviving in a pile of corpses overnight. Animals died of exposure, because farmers were not allowed to move them. Do we have the right to do this, purely to preserve a questionably desirable export trade, when vaccination or homœopathy could stop the spread of the virus in days?

Merla Zellerbach
Wake Up and Smell the Chemicals

Helpful info and product safer alternatives given, but unfathomably she didn't mention that
one should avoid the use of scented fabric softeners. Nor did Ms. Zellerbach take into account
all of the people who can suffer adverse events due to secondary and tertiary levels of
exposure. As I read this, it was written for the primary user who is developing chemical
sensitization. Remember that synthetic scents are volatile organic compounds, concocted of
tens to hundreds of chemicals from the industry's arsenal of between 3,000 and 5,000
inadequately tested chemicals. We've got to start thinking beyond ourselves to the effects our actions and the products we use can cause to other people and other creatures of our planet. barb

General Sea Life Facts The following questions were answered by whale biologist Sally Mizroch , research biologist Dan Odell, zoo nutritionist Ellen Dierenfeld, and zoo biologist Will Waddell. How would humans measure intelligence in a marine mammal?
Intelligence is a hard thing to measure, even in people. I don't think anyone really knows just how smart the whales and dolphins are. Their environment is so different from ours that I think it would be hard to measure them by our standards. We know they have large brains and appear to use them well. They are very aware of their environment and of all the things around them. I think that's smart. Are many mammals being taken from our oceans to zoos or water parks?
Are we doing more harm than good to sea mammals by keeping them in captivity?
Have there been any new mammals discovered in the past ten years?
Yes, a new species of beaked whale was discovered in Peruvian waters a few years ago. It is the Peruvian beaked whale, Mesoplodon peruviensis. There are probably other undiscovered whales and dolphins in the ocean.

Careers in Zoos and Aquariums
Do you love animals? Ever thought about working with animals as a career? Or, maybe you've just wondered what a day in the life of a zookeeper or marine biologist would be like. Read on to find the answers about what it takes to become a zookeeper or marine biologist. Zookeeper Education: In order to become an animal keeper, you will need lots of biology and zoology courses. These courses will teach you different things about animals, such as their habitat and diet and things about their muscles, nervous systems, and bones. Experience:
Aside from educational courses, experience is another good way to gain insight and information about what a zookeeper position involves. You can gain experience by working with a veterinarian, volunteering in an animal shelter, or interning at the local zoo. Salary: Zookeeper's salaries range from minimum wage to over $30,000 a year. A zookeeper's earnings are dependent on the location of the zoo and the position being offered. Most zoos in major metropolitan areas will pay higher than zoos in rural areas. Attitude: Although education and experience are necessary, another component to a zookeeper's job is attitude and personality. Important traits for zookeepers include a being hard worker, having creative skills and a positive attitude, and possessing good communication skills with both people and animals.
