... Walking Tour Jim was the last to be born in the old McCowan farmhouse at Stop 20 Kingston Road. The construction of H.A. Halbert Public School a stone's throw from the house was still almost 20 years away. One of Jim's business ventures, Bantun Sales , was the last tenant of the grand old farmhouse, demolished in 1975 to make room for a townhouse complex. James Alexander "Jim" McCowan
By Bill McCowan Being eight years older than Jim, I can remember getting up one morning and seeing this person dressed in white - her name, I believe, was Maud Knight, a nurse, and Dr. Demary from Lyall Avenue in Toronto, our family doctor. I guess at that point I was told that I had a baby brother. Doctor Demary made several house calls but always had time to have a game of Billiards before he left. He taught us to play Boston we had a small billiard table in the kitchen. With the Kingston Road being so close and busy, somebody had to watch Jim once he started to walk. That was my job some of the time. When Jim started to Public School at S. S. #9 in Scarborough Village, I was already out, but my cousin, Frank, had one year left. So Jim did have someone to walk to school with for a year. After that he was probably more on his own, although Victor and Florence Brittnel, who lived in Stan Chester's house, went to school for a while. (While the Britnells lived in his house, Stan, my Dad's first cousin, lived in a tent out by his barn. This was during the Depression.) Victor and Florence went to #9 for a while but left because Mrs. Brittnell didn't think the school was good enough for them. Joyce Thomson taught at #9 and was Jim's teacher. He quite often called her Joyce instead of Miss Thomson.

Moran described an Israeli border policeman beating an unarmed Palestinian. "The unarmed youth was held on the ground while police officers armed with guns and clubs climbed over each other's backs to land their own blows on his body," Moran wrote. "Most of the witnesses to this scene said it happens all the time. When Israeli police and Palestinians are concerned there is no justice or fair play. Might makes right. I witnessed the police laughing and making self-congratulatory gestures after the beating." How encouraging to know that an elected US representative has the sinew to describe such a scene.

Applications News Historic Properties Browse By Topic ... Main Notes from remarks at Alexander slave gravesite Jim Puckett Mecklenburg County Commissioner It is a great honor to be here today. Like many of you, I trace my family's roots here in Mecklenburg County back to the mid 1700s. It is important that we remember not only those we honor today, but everyone who came before us here in Mecklenburg County. It was here in this fertile soil that the seeds of liberty were sown that grew to become the great country we enjoy today. Those first peoples of Mecklenburg were survivors. Whether they came of their own accord, escaping a repressive government, to seek religious freedom or even under duress, the fact is only the strongest survived. It is also important to remember whatever the circumstances, virtuous or offensive that brought our ancestors here to this hollowed ground, it was God's will. It was His holy plan that they would live contribute and die here, in Mecklenburg County. Those chosen people each had his or her role in forming what became America. Today we celebrate the fruits, both literally and figuratively that sprang from our ancestors. We relish the reality of freedom that they each sought and together as a society we have made possible. Let us never forget the past. And let us always celebrate each of our roles in God's plan in the future for this the greatest and freest nation on earth.

August/September 2001 Introduction Brief History My Teacher Habits Affect Functioning ... Recommended Reading
I have learned that 'we are often unaware'
of habits that cause us stress and interfere with our ability to respond effectively to 'stimuli' in our daily lives. Having "Progressive MS" for the past 8 years has drastically changed my posture and functional mobility. As my nervous system has deteriorated, I developed many maladaptive habits to compensate for lost function. The Alexander Technique is all about changing these maladaptive habits so we can respond more effectively and achieve better, more efficient functioning. Although little known, the Alexander Technique has been recognized by knowledgable individuals for over 100 years as a unique and remarkably effective technique of mind-body re-education. I am not sure if it was ever meant for people suffering with MS, but I can personally attest that it is one of the very few therapies (including drug therapies) that has visibily improved the quality of my life.

EXT. CARVER FRONT STEPS – DAWN
The school stretches out before us, slumbering in the overcast morning air. Along the front sidewalk, a lone JANITOR trundles a garbage bin filled with overstuffed Hefty bags. A weathered FORD ESCORT pulls into the empty PARKING LOT and comes to a stop near the athletic field. A TEENAGE GIRL’S VOICE – TRACY (V.O.) None of this would have happened if Mr. McAllister hadn’t meddled the way he did. He should have just accepted things as they are instead of trying to interfere with destiny. You see, you can’t interfere with destiny. That’s why it’s destiny. And if you try to interfere, the same thing’s going to happen anyway, and you’ll just suffer. JIM McALLISTER, a teacher in his mid- to late-thirties, emerges from the car in running clothes carrying a briefcase, gym bag, and coffee mug. On his way to the field, he crosses paths with the janitor. JIM Morning, Lowell. Lowell nods, hoists a bag and tosses it into a dumpster. EXT. CARVER ATHLETIC FIELD – DAWN
JIM CIRCLES THE TRACK, sweating and panting.

Having lived on Portland since a child, all of my recreational activities have always revolved around the sea. School holidays were spent shore fishing, going to sea and helping out on commercial crabbers, snorkeling and prawning with a dip net. After leaving school I joined the navy and continued my education. Upon leaving the navy I worked in a variety of engineering firms, was lucky to be around at a time when companies paid for further education and university sandwich courses. I finally joined the Education Department of Dorset County Council. Now retired aged 56. I have always maintained my interest in all activities relating to the sea, have written articles about bass fishing for the Angling Times, have been involved in a number of boat building projects, converted half of my garage into a temperate marine fish house, interested in the application of new technologies and introducing my three grandchildren to the wonders of the
    sea.

    Subject: Of Hedgehogs and Foxes
Thursday, May 9, 2002, at 8:22 AM PT Dear Alex, First, a quick correction to yesterday's dispatch. That big yellow blimp that the Rolling Stones reportedly had up in the Bronx yesterday turned out to be Keith Richards' liver. Alex, you know many things; that is why you have been named editor of the Ideas section of the Boston Globe . I, by contrast, know one big thing; that is why I am unemployed. Now, you probably think that I am alluding to Isaiah Berlin's famous 1953 essay on Tolstoy, "The Hedgehog and the Fox," which began with the statement, "The fox knows many things, but the hedgehog knows one big thing." As examples of hedgehogs—those who understand the world in terms of a single central vision—Berlin gave Dante, Plato, Hegel, and Proust. As examples of foxes—those who have a pluralist vision of the world—he gave Shakespeare, Montaigne, Goethe, and Joyce. Ever since, intellectualoids have made a parlor game of dichotomizing thinkers into the categories of hedgehog and fox. The hedgehog-fox aphorism has always been attributed, by Berlin and everyone else, to the ancient Greek poet Archilochus (680-640 B.C.). Now, it seems, this is the result of a literary forgery. The actual source of the aphorism turns out to be a long-forgotten Regency wag, adventurer, and rakehell named Archilochus Jones (1782?-1820).

    From: Jim Holt
    To: Alexander Star
Subject: Striking a Blow for Brevity
Wednesday, May 8, 2002, at 8:03 AM PT Dear Alex, Sorry for that earnest (and badly written) nonsense about the urban virtues of Boston in yesterday's dispatch. It seems to have been typed into my laptop by the super of my building, who let himself into my apartment to fix a leaky faucet while I was out getting lunch. Needless to say, he's from Boston. For writers like me who aspire to be both silly and dull at the same time, there is no finer model than New York Times op-ed columnist Maureen Dowd. (Some say that "Maureen Dowd" is nothing but a pen-name under which Leon Wieseltier publishes his musings, but I can assure them that she really exists. In fact, I saw Maureen driving down Ninth Street just the other day. On the back of her car was a bumper-sticker that said OP-ED COLUMNISTS DO IT TWICE A WEEK.) In her column in today's Times , Dowd concludes with the words, "Brevity is the soul of life." That is so true. I thought of the great Regency aphorist Archilochus Jones, who wrote, "Almost all human affairs are tedious. Everything is too long. Visits, dinners, concerts, plays, speeches, acts of oral sexual congress, pleadings, essays, sermons, are too long."
