Yehuda Amichai Touched the Soul of a Nation But Not Ours
by Jonathan Chisdes
As I was driving to temple last Friday, I heard the report on the radio Yehuda Amichai had died. The famous Israeli poet was 76 years old. I felt suddenly saddened to know that a great one had passed from this world. As both a Jew and a poet myself, I felt a connection to Amichai. He was rightly praised and now greatly mourned in Israel. His poems spoke to the soul of his nation; when his first book of poems, Now and in Other Days, was published in 1955, it revolutionized both Hebrew language and literature. And in 1993 when then-Prime Minister Yitzchak Rabin received the Nobel Peace Prize, he read Amichai's poem "God Takes Pity on Kindergarten Children." Yet here, in the US, his passing is hardly noticed. There was only a small mention in important newspapers like The New York Times , and absolutely nothing in the local Orlando Sentinel . Why was such a giant ignored here? Do Americans really care so much less about poetry and poets than most other cultures? Perhaps it is the strange culture in this country which shuns anything intellectual. The phrase "popular poetry" seems like an oxymoron in America. Poets are just not mainstream here.

Yehuda Amichai 1924 - 2000
Wildpeace Not the peace of a cease-fire
not even the vision of the wolf and the lamb,
but rather
as in the heart when the excitement is over
and you can talk only about a great weariness.
I know that I know how to kill, that makes me an adult.
And my son plays with a toy gun that knows
how to open and close its eyes and say Mama.
A peace
without the big noise of beating swords into ploughshares, without words, without the thud of the heavy rubber stamp: let it be light, floating, like lazy white foam. A little rest for the wounds - who speaks of healing? (And the howl of the orphans is passed from one generation to the next, as in a relay race: the baton never falls.) Let it come like wildflowers, suddenly, because the field must have it: wildpeace. Amichai read this poem at the 1994 awards ceremony in Oslo when Yitzhak Rabin and Shimon Peres received the Nobel Peace Prize with Yasir Arafat. In Memoriam

The Famous French King
The famous French king said, Apres moi, le deluge!
And Noah the Righteous said, Before me, the flood,
and when he left the ark he declared, The flood is behind me.
And I say, I am right in the middle of the flood,
I am the ark and the animals, clean and unclean,
I am two of a kind, male and female,
I am the remembering animals and the forgetting animals,
and I am the seedling of the vine for the good world though I can't drink the wine myself. In the end I'll be a tall Ararat, lonely and dry, carrying a strange empty ark on my shoulders with some leftover love inside it, a remnant of prayer, a scrap of hope. I Know How Slight I know how slight are the threads that tie me to my joy but from those slight threads I've woven me strong clothing like a soft armor, the warp and-weft of joy to help me cover my nakedness and protect me. But sometimes it seems to me my life isn't worth the skin of my body that wraps around it, not even

Yehuda Amichai
Shortlisted for the 2001 Griffin Poetry Prize Open Closed Open - the magnum opus of Israel's leading poet, widely acknowledged as one of the great poets of our time. Here are poems unlike any other, at once meditative and playful, anxious and full of hope, sung in a language of biblical directness and meaning. Amichai writes of the language of love and tea with roasted almonds, of desire and love. Of a Jewish cemetery whose groundskeeper is an expert on flowers and seasons of the year, but no expert of buried Jews; of Russian shirts embroidered in the colors of love and death; of Jerusalem, the city where everything sails: the flags, the prayer shawls, the caftans, the monks' robes, the kaffiyehs, and young women's dresses. The poet tenderly, mischievously breaks open the grand diction of the revered Jewish verses and supplications and suddenly discovers the light that his own experience casts upon them. Here, the bread of memory and the circus of forgetting, nostalgia for God and a better world, dust and heat, tamarisk trees that stand by in silence, and the flight attendants of the next millennium, who come to him and say: "You can still get a seat on the third millennium before lift-off."

Taken from "A Touch of Grace" Poems by Yehuda Amichai, Photographs by Didier Ben Loulou, an exhibition publication of the Museum on the Seam for Dialogue, Understanding, and Coexistence in Jerusalem. Between things falling and those hastily being raised Is there place for one who lingers, one who remains? Between things dying and those living Is there place for one living quietly in his house, One who stays where he is, one who sees, one who is seen? I'm a judge, alone in judgement on the bench, There is no accuser, no accused, Only witnesses and testimony. In my childhood I knew about illness in people, I understood sick animals
