The Old Duck Man - Carl Barks Carl Barks was born on March 27 in 1901 near Merril, Oregon. He grew up on the farm of his parents. 1910 the family moved for two years to California. With ten years he started to draw, inspirated by the drawings of a class-mate. When Carl was 15 his mother died. As a result of this he left school to help his father on the farm. He used every free time to work on other farms. As it was the time of WW1 boys like him could earn five Dollars a day, which was a lot for that time. Nevertheless he continued drawing. For a short time he took a correspndence course at the "London School of Cartooning". In December 1918 he went with 100 Dollar to San Francisco, where he tried to get a job as an artist. After two disappointing years Barks returned to Oregon, where he married 1923 for the first time. As the farm was going badly, he moved together with his wife to Roseville, eastern of Sacramento. Barks was working there for five and a half years as a coach builder for the "Pacific Fruit Express". But he didn't give up his dream to become cartoonist. 1928 he started to sell funny drawing to the "Calgary Eye-Opener" in Minneapolis. After the separation of his wife, Barks returned to Oregon in 1930. Getting unemployed, because of the world economic crisis, he finall decided to make drawing to his occupation. After another year as freelance at the "Calgary Eye-Opener" he moved to Minneaplois to get a regular job as joke writer and illustrator.

The Biography of Carl Barks

by Steve Ortman
Carl Barks was born on March 27 in Merrill, Oregon on a farm.
"I remember there in Oregon on the home ranch, there was a dust problem from the wind blowing off the ploughed fields, and she got all fed up with taking the curtains down and washing them. They had to wash everything by hand in those days. She got the idea of making little stencils like doilies and painting patterns like lace curtains. It saved all that washing, because you could look in from the outside and think, well, that house has curtains up." (Interview by Geoffrey Blum, December 10-11, 1991)
Picture from 1906: Barks is second from right His family moved for two years to California where he starts to draw at the age of about 10. After the death of his mother, Barks left the school at the age of 15 to help his father on the farm. He continued to draw and even took part in a long distance course called "London School of Cartooning" With 100 dollars he moved to San Francisco to start as a comic artist in the newspaper but had to realize that they had too many good artists to take a beginner. Barks returned to Oregon.

About Carl Barks Carl Barks was born on 27 March 1901 on a farm near Merrill, Oregon, as the younger of two brothers. He became attracted to drawing early, but apart from village school and the first 4 lessons of a correspondence course in drawing he never received any formal education. In December 1918 he moved to San Francisco where he worked as an errand boy at a printer's. Since he did not find a place for his artistic ambitions in San Francisco, he returned to work on his parents' farm after one and a half year.
Cartoon for the Calgary Eye-Opener In 1923 he married his first wife, Pearl Turner, with whom he had 2 daughters (Peggy in 1923, Dorothy in 1924). After an interlude at a lumberjack camp he worked, starting in 1923, for six and a half years at a repair shop for railroad cars of the Pacific Fruit Express Company in Roseville, California. During this time, in 1929, he separated from his first wife; they were divorced in 1930. In 1928/1929 he managed to sell several cartoon drawings to the Calgary Eye-Opener, a humor magazine of the cruder kind, and to the more distinguished magazines Judge and College Humor. Presently he quit his job at the railroad company and began to freelance for the Eye-Opener. In November 1931 he moved to Minneapolis, where the Eye-Opener resided, and got a salaried employment there in December 1931. It was also in Minneapolis where he first met his second wife, Clara Balken, who worked as a phone operator at his hotel; they married in 1938.

Carl Barks was one of the world's legendary comic artists, and as the father of the Donald Duck and Uncle Scrooge comics, he could properly be called 'The Cartoonist of the 20th Century'. Beginning his career at Disney in the thirties, his talent was soon recognized by his employer and colleagues. He soon made solo albums, including the entire 'Uncle Scrooge' series.

From 1943 to 1966 Carl Barks wrote and drew hundreds of Disney's Donald Duck comics. He created Duckburg and several new characters for the comics (Uncle Scrooge McDuck, Gyro Gearloose, Gladstone Gander) and gave 'the Duck family' real human feelings. His stories are masterpieces of escalating storylines, and are great entertainment for all ages.
An original detail sketch by Barks
Unfortunately Barks' talent wasn't enough for his employers to hold on to his originals, and as a consequence, are nearly all destroyed. A great loss, since Barks was a dynamic cartoonist and an imaginative scenarist, whose influence on cartooning in general cannot be overestimated.
The 'Old Duck Man', as Barks affectionately was called, stopped working for Disney in 1968 and started painting for his own pleasure. He got into conflict with Disney over using the Duck characters - the same ones that he created - in his oil paintings. Many Disney artists have tried to equal Barks' style and wit in his Duck stories, but only

Carl Barks
Text and photographs by Frank Stajano In my life I had the great privilege not only of growing up on Barks's comics but also of meeting the man who created them. I have decided to split this page into two parts: a more formal presentation of this outstanding author, and a more personal view of my relationship with him.
The Duck Man
Who is Carl Barks? To me, the greatest comics author of all times, and one of the giants of 20th century literature. I don't expect this assessment to be universally shared, but I also know I'm not alone in thinking this. Few will argue with the fact that Barks, with Floyd Gottfredson a close second, was the best comics author that the Walt Disney company ever had. He turned Donald Duck from a slapstick comedy cartoon character to an all too real human being (albeit duck shaped) in whose traits readers could recognise their friends and themselves. As he breathed new life into the characters he inherited from the animation and the daily strips, Barks also created memorable new ones: Uncle Scrooge McDuck, the Beagle Boys, Gyro Gearloose and his helper, Magica de Spell, Gladstone Gander, the Junior Woodchucks just to name the most famous. It is doubtful that the world of Disney comics would have ever developed to the extent that it has without Carl Barks's masterpieces, which attracted and inspired a critical mass not only of readers but also of other authors, from all over the world. One of a minority of comics authors who developed both the plot and the artwork for his stories, Barks came into Disney comics from Disney animation, where his strengths were

Carl Barks's life
By Daniël van Eijmeren: Carl Barks was born on March 27, 1901, on a grain ranch near Merrill, Oregon, a small town on the Oregon-California border, just south of Klamath Falls. The young Carl was a solitary youngster, partly due to the isolated location of his home and his partial deafness. Already at an early age, Barks began drawing. Further on, besides school, his youth was mainly filled with working for his parents. In December, 1918, Barks left home to try his luck elsewhere. After several heavy jobs varying from logger to working in a riveting gang, he finally got a job as cartoonist for a magazine called Calgary Eye-Opener . A few years later, in 1935, he heard of work at the Disney Studio and he decided to apply. Shortly after he was contracted, Barks submitted a gag about a mechanized barber chair for the Donald Duck cartoon Modern Inventions . This gag meant a promotion to the story department where Barks co-worked on famous cartoons like Donald's Nephews Donald's Cousin Gus Timber The Vanishing Private (1942) and The Plastics Inventor In the early 1940s, Barks was tired of working in collaboration. In addition, the Studio was rapidly being converted in a war plant which produced lots of films for the military. Getting sick of the air conditioning each day was the final straw and on November 6, 1942, he decided to leave the Studio to set up a chicken farm.

Carl Barks, the genius behind the creation of "Scrooge McDuck," the world's richest duck , and the man who drew the comic book adventures of Donald Duck, his nephews, and Uncle Scrooge back in the '40s, '50s and '60s is the subject of this page. The remarkable Mr. Barks celebrated his 96th birthday at a special celebration presented at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida, April 12 and 13, 1997. He is seen here on that occasion with Kathy Morby and Bill Grandey, of the Carl Barks Studio, together with 250 of his closest friends. Information and commentary about Mr. Barks can be found on many web pages other than this one. Try running his name through a search engine or pursue him further via one of the links at the bottom of this page. In addition, a number of books have been written which contain biographical information and a complete survey of his career. Consequently, this page is mostly limited to information regarding the current value of original oil paintings and certain limited edition prints, signed by Mr. Barks. In addition, I hope to be a sort of central point for compiling the opinions of fans regarding which of the famous Barks oil paintings is the "best" one.
