21. Marilyn Talks To Jack Benny
Partial script of 1953 comedy sketch with benny and Marilyn Munroe.

Marilyn Talks to Jack Benny Marilyn Monroe appeared on the Jack Benny show in 1953. The following is part of the sketch in which Marilyn and Jack appeared together. It was originally printed in the July 1994 issue of our newsletter. MM: In the picture, all I wanted was money and diamonds, but now for the first time, I realise that all I really want is you. JB: Marilyn... VOICE OVER: Dream on Mr Benny, dream on... JB: Marilyn. Marilyn, I'm mad about you. MM: I'm mad about you too Jack. Jack - will you do something wonderful for me? It would make me very happy. JB: Well of course Marilyn. I'd do anything, anything for you. What is it? MM: Well, in my next picture there's going to be so many love scenes, I want you for my leading man. JB: Oh Marilyn, I'd love to be your leading man. MM: Good. Now if we can only get permission from Darryl Zanuck. JB: Why? Who did Mr Zanuck have in mind? MM: Himself! JB: Gee Marilyn. I just can't get over the both of us here all alone. MM: Yes Jack. I never dreamed it could happen to I. JB: Neither did me.

THE KINGSTON TRIO THE JACK BENNY SHOW circa January 1965 Mel Blanc, Jack Benny, Nick Reynolds, Bob Shane, John Stewart The members of The Kingston Trio were no strangers to television. From their earliest days, in 1958, up to the present, they have been featured in all manner of television shows. These particular television highlights are from The Jack Benny Show circa January 1965. The boys played the parts of incarcerated (on very loose charges!) American tourists in a skit featuring the great Mel Blanc as Cy, their Mexican jailerin where else, but Tijuana! To all manner of questions asked by The Trio of Cy regarding their release, all he would say was, "Si." This proved a bit exasperating for the boys, but all ended well! Yes, I said Benjamin Kubelsky . That was the name of the Waukegan, ILnative who the world would come to know as jack benny (18941974).
http://members.aol.com/vartox/benny.htm
Yes, I said "Benjamin Kubelsky". That was the name of the Waukegan, IL native who the world would come to know as Jack Benny (1894-1974). I wanted to say "who the world remembers as" instead of "would come to know as", but frankly, I'm not sure the world does remember Jack. A shame, really. Jack's timing, cast of characters, and his legendary stranglehold on his money made the perennial 39-year-old unique in the entertainment world. Jack's shows still rank highly on my list of favorites, easily surpassing anything on TV these days. Unfortunately, these shows are apparently only available on some PBS outlets, as is the case here in Orlando. The last nationally available airings that I am aware of were on The Comedy Channel (a predecessor of today's Comedy Central cable channel). Though that run didn't last nearly as long as I'd hoped, the editing was much superior to a previous run on the Family Channel. Ideally, I'd like to see the show return on a channel like Nick at Nite, but given the state of the programming on that particular operation, I'm not holding my breath. Instead of wasting my time and yours on a lengthy treatise here, let me suggest you check out the book

Sunday Nights at Seven
The Jack Benny Story

By Jack Benny and his daughter Joan
Warner Books, 1990
A great book - lots of entertaining anecdotes from Joan, Jack's daughter. By far the highlight of the book is the excerpts that are included from Jack's unpublished autobiography, "I Always Had Shoes".
Jack Benny
By Mary Livingstone Benny and Hilliard Marks with Marcia Borie
Doubleday, 1978
A much more detailed look at Jack's life with comments from Mary, friends, and co-workers of Jack's throughout the years.
Jack Benny An Intimite Biography By Irving A. Fein G. P. Putnam Sons, 1976 A fun book, and the first one published after Jack's passing. Unlike the "interview" nature of Mary's book, this one is almost entirely told from Irving's point of view. Apart from Jack himself, Irving, as Jack's personal manager for years and years, is the perfect person to be telling his story. The Jack Benny Show The Life and Times of America's Most Loved Entertainer By Milt Josefsberg Of the four biographies on Jack, this one is my favourite. It's not the most factual, it's not the most detailed, but it's certainly the best read. (And... I'm grateful to my friend Sue for sending me a copy!) :-)

Jack Benny Audio Clips This past weekend marked the end of a century, and the end of a millennium. With a minimum of fireworks and noise makers, and none of the panic that surrounded the rolling over of clocks last year; this was truly the end of the twentieth century and the start of a new millennium. What better way (I thought to myself) to usher out the twentieth century, than to watch an early performance of Johnny Carson. Johnny Carson dominated late-night TV programming in the U.S. for more than three decades, and most Americans still hold special memories of the Tonight Show , hosted by Johnny Carson.

http://www.museum.tv/archives/etv/B/htmlB/bennyjack/bennyjack.htm
BENNY, JACK U.S. Comedian Jack Benny was among the most beloved American entertainers of the 20th century. He brought a relationship-oriented, humorously vain persona honed in vaudeville, radio, and film to television in 1950, starring in his own television series from that year until 1965. The comedian grew up in Waukegan and went on the vaudeville stage in his early teens playing the violin. The instrument quickly turned into a mere prop, and his lack of musicianship became one of the staples of his act. Benny's first major success was on the radio. He starred in a regular radio program from 1932 to 1955, establishing the format and personality he would transfer almost intact to television. Most of his films capitalized on his radio fame (e.g., The Big Broadcast of 1937 ), although a couple of pictures, Charley's Aunt (1941) and To Be or Not to Be (1942) showed that he could play more than one character.

The format of the show, and the personality of its star, so
well honed in two decades on radio, made the transition
to television almost intact. Jack's stinginess, vanity
about his supposed age of 39, basement vault where he
kept all his money, ancient Maxwell automobile, and
feigned ineptness at playing the violin were all part of
the act. Added to Jack's famous pregnant pause and exasperated "Well!" were a rather mincing walk, an affected hand to the cheek, and a painted look of disbelief when confronted by life's little tragedies.
