Richard Branson is the most exciting and personable businessman alive since Steve Jobs back in the 80's. He has achieved what most young professionals could only dream of: incredible wealth, fame, and acknowledgment, all the while still managing to have a good time. why is he famous? Richard Branson is a flamboyan British billionaire that has built his company (Virgin) into one of the world's biggest brands. He's brash and isn't afraid to take risks! overall rating There are few businessmen who have been as flamboyant or as successful as British tycoon Richard Branson. He is the founder of the Virgin Music label, Virgin Atlantic Airways, and Virgin Cola. He has unorthodox methods when it comes to doing business, but they work. And chances are that no one has had as much fun on the road to becoming a billionaire than Branson did.

Name: Richard Branson
Age:
Job: Chairman, the Virgin Group of Companies
In real life: Richard Branson is the global head of a group of companies whose combined sales exceeded £1.5bn in 1995, and which includes the Megastore retail chain, Virgin Atlantic Airlines, V2 Records and Virgin Net. As well as his business activities, Richard is a trustee of several charities, including the Healthcare Foundation which campaigns against tobacco advertising in sport through its offshoot, Parents Against Tobacco.
Adventures: Since 1985, Richard has been involved in breaking records. In 1986, his boat Virgin Atlantic Challenger 2 crossed the Atlantic in the fastest ever time. A year later, he crossed the Atlantic in the hot air balloon Virgin Atlantic Flyer with veteran balloonist Per Lindstrand, setting new records which stood until 1991, when the pair flew the Pacific Ocean in another "Flyer" balloon, setting a record distance of 6,761 miles. Since then, Richard has focused on the Global Challenge: this year marks his third attempt.
In his brief leisure hours, Richard plays tennis, ski-ing and chess, and occasional water sports in the warm blue seas around Necker Island.

He started a Student Advisory Centre at 17, aiming to help young people. At twenty years old, he founded Virgin as a mail order record retailer and a short while later, he opened a record shop in Oxford Street, London. In 1972, a recording studio was built in Oxfordshire where the first Virgin artist, Mike Oldfield, recorded "Tubular Bells", later released in 1973. The first album of Virgin Records went on to sell more than five million copies. At the age of 27, Richard signed The Sex Pistols to the Virgin Records label after the group was turned down by every label in Great Britain.

NOVA : Richard, you've had this dream of flying around the world for some time, and have even been involved in another global attempt. Do you think this project is truly the one that will make it?

BRANSON : Well, the odds must be against anybody being able to fly around the world in a balloon on the first attempt. All of us who are attempting to go around the world in balloons are effectively flying in experimental craft because these craft cannot be tested. The balloons only have one life and the only way of finding out whether they work is to attempt to fly around the world. So, obviously we hope that we'll be successful this December or this January, but the odds have to be, I suppose, against success. But we're going to give it a very good try.
NOVA : Do you have a specific job once you're in flight? We hear about Rory, for example, being the navigator...
BRANSON : Basically, if you take the trans-Pacific as an example, we basically shared the flying. And if you take a trans-global trip, we may be up there for maybe fifteen to thirty days. It's going to be very important that each of us get into a fairly routine day so maybe eight hours of flying, eight hours sleeping, eight hours resting. So I think that's the best way it's going to work.
NOVA : Our main focus is the science and technology behind this kind of ballooning: the meteorology, the atmospheric layers what do you think students can learn by following your adventure?

Some of the cash has gone on start-ups - V2 Records and his overseas mobile telephone operations - while some has been swallowed up by existing companies. Despite the extra cash, Sir Richard is still struggling to get his train empire running on time, Virgin Airlines has suffered post-September 11, and his entire operation was hit by the economic slowdown. For the first time in his career he had to make people redundant. But critics who suggest he has expanded too much (he now has 250 companies) and predict his empire is about to crash around his ears are sounding hoarse by now - they've been saying it for years.

'It took me years to work out the difference between net and gross,' declares the man who has made £1bn with his Virgin empire. 'In meetings I just used to say 'tell me if it's good or bad news.' In fact, Branson maintains he launched Virgin Direct in 1995 because he wanted to demystify the complications of finance. 'Being dyslexic, I have to simplify everything and the financial service industry was mind bogglingly difficult.' Branson is fond of linking his business ventures to his own personal experience, bolstering his man of the people appeal. His jumpers, balloon escapades and stunts such as launching Virgin Brides in full matrimonial drag mean it's difficult to associate him with the boardroom.
