She attended college at the University of California in Los Angeles. Her Broadway debut was in 1959, in the musical Once Upon a Matress. After appearing in several Broadway shows, Burnett became a regular on the CBS-TV variety show The Garry Moore Show from 1959 to 1962. She also appeared on CBS specials with other stars of musical theater, including a memorable performance singing duets with Julie Andrews. She soon had her own comedy-variety show on CBS, The Carol Burnett Show, which ran from 1967 to 1979. In a signal that became one of her trademarks, she always ended the show with a tug on her earlobe as a greeting to her family. Burnett's feature films include Pete 'n' Tillie (1972), Annie (1982), and the TV movie Friendly Fire (1979). She brought her variety show back to TV for a brief run in 1991, with the new title Carol and Company. From 1963 to 1982, Burnett was married to TV producer Joe Hamilton. They had three daughters, Carrie, Jody, and Erin. Bibliography: Wendy Brabner, ed., Texas Monthly Texas Characters Datebook 1985 (Austin, Texas: Texas Monthly Press, 1984).

C arol Burnett, born in 1933 in San Antonio, Texas, has been a long-time queen of TV revue comedy and enormously popular comedienne and actor. When Carol was very young, she lived with her alcoholic parents for only a few years before she was moved to the care of her grandmother "Nanny". They lived in a not-too-nice Hollywood neighborhood on welfare. In 1954 after a short stint in college, she moved to New York to pursue acting, with the help of a benefactor who gave her $1,000 on the condition that she help others if she ever became a success. Burnett had a rags-to-riches route to fame. She worked as a hatcheck girl until she landed her first TV role in 1955 on "The Winchell- Mahoney Show," a kids' program. In 1957, she began appearing in various Manhattan cabarets and nightclubs. Her parents died while Burnett was still in her 20s, and she took on the responsibility of raising her half-sister Christy. In 1959 Burnett starred in the Broadway hit musical "Once Upon a Mattress". She also got a regular spot on "The Garry Moore Show," a variety show that won her an Emmy in 1962. That brought her together with producer Joe Hamilton, whom she married in 1963 (her second marriage); the couple eventually had three daughters.

Carol Burnett’s wacky, warm-hearted humor and versatility have won the hearts of millions of television viewers, movie buffs and live audiences around the world. Her career began in 1959 with her becoming a regular on Garry Moore’s popular show. But before the happiness came sadness. She was born in San Antonio, Texas, to alcoholic parents who separated before she was 4. She then lived with her grandmother and at 7 moved with her to Hollywood. She later attended UCLA and took to the stage in New York before becoming a star on TV. "Those who say they can’t are absolutely right, and so are those who say they can," she says of attitude.

Carol on Broadway!
More on Carol
Burnett in this book!
No question, the most successful variety show of all-time had to be The Carol Burnett Show (CBS 1967-1978). But one variety show failure almost derailed Carol Burnett's amazing career before it really got going. Carol Burnett got her start in off-Broadway theatre, first achieved national attention with a novelty tune entitled "I Made A Fool Of Myself Over John Foster Dulles" (Eisenhower's prim Secretary of State - don't ask), then made her way to television via appearances on The Ed Sullivan Show Burnett's first regular series role was on a sitcom called 'Stanley' (Sept. 1956 - March 1957) - one of those early TV shows with a high-quality pedigree that failed to catch on. In 'Stanley', Buddy Hackett starred as the lackadaisical manager of a hotel lobby newstand/ticket agency in New York City, and Carol Burnett played his loopy girlfriend Celia. Writers and producers from Sid Caesar's 'Your Show of Shows' were behind the production - produced and directed by Max Liebman, with playwrite Neil Simon on the writing staff. This NBC sitcom (broadcast live) barely lasted one season. During the run of 'Stanley', Burnett did a guest shot on the 'Garry Moore Show' (1950-1958), a popular daytime variety program on CBS. This led to Burnett's next big break - as a regular player on the prime-time

BURNETT, CAROL U.S. Comedienne The many honors awarded Carol Burnett attest to the approbation of her peers and the love of her public. Carol Burnett has been Outstanding Comedienne for the American Guild of Variety Artists five times and recipient of five Emmys. She received TV Guide ' s nod as Favorite Female Performer for three consecutive years in the early 1960s, along with a Peabody award in 1963. The Academy of Television Arts and Sciences proclaimed her Woman of the Year; a Gallup Poll found her to be one of America's 20 Most Admired Women in 1977. She has eight Golden Globes, twelve People's Choice Awards, the first National TV Critics Circle Award for Outstanding Performance, the first Ace Award for Best Actress, and the Horatio Alger Award, conferred by the Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans. The latter is, in many ways, most significant, as Burnett's personal style and endearing "everywoman" qualities resulted from a life filled with emotional abuse and the ravages of poverty. She was inducted into the Television Hall of Fame in 1985. Her grandmother wanted her to go to secretarial school, with the objective of marrying a rich executive. Burnett wanted college, and a degree in journalism. The odds were slim against her finding tuition and carfare of over fifty dollars at a time when the family's rent was thirty-five dollars per month. When an anonymous donor placed a fifty dollar bill in the mailbox, she enrolled at University of California, Los Angeles, quickly switching from journalism to theater arts. Eventually, she joined a musical comedy/opera workshop where she honed her skills in characterization, comic music, and acting. She became a campus star. But her family's poverty made her dreams of moving to New York City and playing on Broadway seem unattainable. A performance at a professor's home in a skit from the musical

THE CAROL BURNETT SHOW
U.S. Comedy/Variety Show
When The Carol Burnett show aired in September of 1967 on CBS, no one expected it to run eleven years. The show gave Carol Burnett, along with regulars Harvey Korman, Vicki Lawrence, Lyle Waggoner (who left in 1974), and Tim Conway (whose occasional guest appearances became permanent in 1975) an opportunity to fuse the best of live, vaudeville-style performance with the creative benefits of time and tape. Burnett's ensemble quickly bonded into a tight unit of professionals who looked, and acted, as if performing on The Carol Burnett Show was the best fun an entertainer could have. In reality, the meticulously-structured, musical-comedy program became one of the last, and one of the finest prime time variety shows to link the modern television age with Tin Pan Alley and the Golden Ages of motion pictures and television. Throughout the show's run, Burnett maintained, and increased, her creative input and control. She worked closely with a team of writers, among them Ken Welch and his wife, Mitzi, who had a strong sense of Burnett's attributes and strengths. (Ken Welch had written the famous "I Made a Fool of Myself Over John Foster Dulles" routine which had catapulted comic chanteuse Burnett to fame in 1956.) The show combined musical comedy with humorous sketches, using the ensemble of players as well as weekly guest stars, such as Jim Naybors, Cher, and Julie Andrews.

Some of her other notable awards include five Golden Globes, the Peabody Award for Friendly Fire and the Ace Award for Between Friends with Elizabeth Taylor. Last year Burnett began her highly-acclaimed cameo appearances on NBC's Mad About You, for which she received her most recent Emmy for Best Actress in a Comedy Series. The episodes, in which she portrays Jamie Buchanan's (Helen Hunt's) mother, have been among the series' highest-rated shows. In 1995 Burnett made her long-awaited return to Broadway, where she starred in
