Carter, Jimmy Carter, Jimmy (James Earl Carter, Jr.), Carter served in the navy, where he worked with Admiral Hyman G. Rickover in developing the nuclear submarine program. Resigning his commission (1953) after his father's death, he ran his family's peanut farm, which he built into a prosperous business. In 1962 he was elected as a Democrat to the first of two terms in the Georgia Senate. He ran unsuccessfully for governor in 1966, then succeeded in 1970, replacing Lester Maddox . As governor, Carter proclaimed that the time had come to end racial discrimination and formed alliances with such civil-rights leaders as Andrew Young Although little known outside Georgia, Carter announced that he would run for president at the end of his gubernatorial term, and through sustained and diligent campaigning won the 1976 Democratic presidential nomination. With Minnesota Senator Walter F. Mondale as his running mate, Carter defeated incumbent President Gerald R. Ford . But Carter never established good relations with Congress and, with Republican successes in the 1978 midterm elections, his difficulties increased. My love of cemeteries began when I was a child. The neighborhood I grew up in used to be a farm. There was a small family plot down a path through the woods. Some of my earliest memories are of walking to that cemetery with some friends, checking out the 2 cabin ruins along the way. I don't remember there being more than about 10 markers, some wooden and some stone. I don't recall if they were legible or not. Later on, the land was developed, but the cemetery remained, down a little path, between two lots. Maybe someday I'll go back and get pictures if anything remains. Saturday, February 02, 2002 Well, I've redesigned the front page, finally. I do have pictures from Europe that I will post soon. I also want to redesign ALL of the inner pages of this site. *sigh* We'll see how quickly everything gets done.

44. A Time To Heal Our Nation, 12/21/98
Former Presidents Gerald Ford and jimmy carter favor a bipartisan resolution of censure by the Senate after the Clinton impeachment vote. (NY Times December 21, 1998)
http://www.ford.utexas.edu/library/speeches/981221.htm
A Time to Heal Our Nation
By Gerald Ford and Jimmy Carter The New York Times Op-Ed, Monday, December 21, 1998 It is proverbial that old men plant trees as an act of faith, precisely because they know they won't themselves live to sit under the shade. In this spirit, we believe the time has come to put aside political differences and plant seeds of justice and reconciliation. There is precedent for this, for during our Presidencies each of us made difficult and controversial decisions in efforts to heal national divisions - the pardoning of President Richard Nixon and the granting of amnesty for those who had avoided the Vietnam draft. In the wake of President Clinton's impeachment by the House of Representatives, America once again suffers from a grievous and deepening wound. Our people are angrily divided. Our political institutions are called into question. Public confidence erodes under waves of personal smearmongering. Against such a backdrop of inflamed emotions, we are convinced that the public good requires a prompt and fair resolution of the impeachment issue. While our acts of pardon or clemency are not directly analogous to the decision pending before the Senate, how that body resolves the issue can have similar benefits of healing and finality. Fortunately, Senate procedures, through their flexibility and freedom, provide the means to end this national ordeal in ways that can uphold the rule of law without permanently damaging the Presidency. Before the Senators make history, we hope they will first turn to history for help in devising what would be, in effect, a unique punishment for a unique set of offenses.

As President of the United States, Jimmy Carter was deeply committed to social justice and basic human rights. He and his wife Rosalynn left the White House in search of meaningful ways to contribute in these areas. In addition to promoting peace and human rights through the nonprofit Carter Center in Atlanta, they lead the Jimmy Carter Work Project (JCWP) for Habitat for Humanity International (HFHI) one week each year. Jimmy Carter Work Project Jimmy Carter's involvement with Habitat for Humanity International began in 1984 when the former president led a work group to New York City to help renovate a six-story building with 19 families in need of decent, affordable shelter. That experience planted the seed, and the Jimmy Carter Work Project has been an internationally recognized event of HFHI ever since.
Each year, Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter give a week of their time along with their building skills to build homes and raise awareness of the critical need for affordable housing. The JCWP is held at a different location each year, and attracts volunteers from around the world. Pres. Jimmy Carter and volunteers will build 77 houses in Anniston, Ala., LaGrange and Valdosta, Ga., during JCWP 2003 June 8-14. The

e-mail this article I t's doubtful that Miles Davis would have had much interest in 4 Generations of Miles , retracing as it does the music of the jazz icon's most straightforwardly jazz-oriented (and, not coincidentally, some would say, his best) years. The concept is an intriguing one: bring together four musicians from different groups under Miles' leadership and have them take a crack at some of his repertoire. So we get a group comprised of Jimmy Cobb, the only surviving member of the Kind of Blue sessions, George Coleman, who played tenor with Davis for a year in the early '60s, Ron Carter, who was the bassist in Miles' legendary late '60s quintet and who eventually presided over the bass chair on Davis' first electric recordings, and Mike Stern, who played with Davis during his '80s comeback. Obviously, there's loads of talent here, and as you might expect, the group plays a really solid set. Perhaps it is a little surprising, as Chip Stern's liner notes suggest, that these musicians, whose birth dates span a period from 1929 to 1953, should be able to gel this well together without having played together before, but then, their work with Miles certainly would have taught them to play in almost any situation without the level of discomfort that some musicians might feel under similar circumstances. The problem with the whole project is that it is so well, ordinary. Not that four musicians playing well together should be a disappointment. But when the name of Miles Davis is invoked, one expects something a little less comfortable. Earlier this year, Herbie Hancock, Michael Brecker, and Roy Hargrove were able to bring new perspectives to the task of deconstructing some of the music of Davis and John Coltrane on their

Your Majesties, Members of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, Excellencies, Ladies and Gentlemen, It is with a deep sense of gratitude that I accept this prize. I am grateful to my wife Rosalynn, to my colleagues at The Carter Center, and to many others who continue to seek an end to violence and suffering throughout the world. The scope and character of our Center's activities are perhaps unique, but in many other ways they are typical of the work being done by many hundreds of nongovernmental organizations that strive for human rights and peace. Most Nobel Laureates have carried out our work in safety, but there are others who have acted with great personal courage. None has provided more vivid reminders of the dangers of peacemaking that two of my friends, Anwar Sadat and Yitzak Rabin , who gave their lives for the cause of peace in the Middle East.

"Jimmy Who?" - so nannten ihn einst einige amerikanische Journalisten spöttisch.
