Carter, Jimmy
During the 1976 Presidential campaign in the United States, Jimmy Carter's evangelical faith arose as one of the major issues. The Watergate scandal had toppled the Nixon administration a short time before, and many Americans felt that morality in government was of supreme importance. Others, however, warned that religion could divide the nation and had no place in an American political campaign.

His actions include founding the Carter-Menil Human Rights Foundation, which awards a prize for outstanding contributions to the advancement of human rights principles every year. He's also brokered peace deals between Egypt and Israel, and diplomatic missions or peace negotiations in Somalia, North Korea, Ethiopia, Haiti, Bosnia, Sudan and Rwanda. Rating: 40 He was recently in my country, venezuela, and did no good. He is way to permissive and tolerant. He never states his possition. However, i do think it is a good thing that he critizises the US government from the inside. American people don't realize that the infamous "axe of evil" are not the only people who hates the US. US, specially it's current government are disliked and desaproved all across latin america, europe, asia and africa (sometimes the dissaprovement is a bit simplistic and unfounded, true. but ofentimes there's a real reason). However, americans have never stopped to think why might that be. They just assume that it is because people are EVIL. That quite infantile, and some self critic should do the US people very good. That's the good thing about southpark.

  • Bravo, Jimmy Carter His visit can't end Castro's tyranny, Cuba's poverty or the Bush administration's lame policies, but he's the first American politician who has tried to give to Cuba, not just take. By Ben Corbett You'll never catch a Cuban wearing one of the pope T-shirts, of course, even at clearance prices. Nobody has the nine bucks (roughly a month's wages) to waste on such a novelty. Nor will they have the cash to buy the new Carter T-shirts. Those are tourist items. Castro hopes the Carter visit will result not just in T-shirts but also in a new wave of U.S. tourists to buy them, bringing dollars to save the moribund Cuban economy. For Castro, the world's foremost media strategist now toiling with his tenth U.S. administration, Carter's visit has been yet another successful coup fought on the age-old battlefield of newsprint. On the heels of being added to the Axis of Evil by his enemies in Washington, who accused him supporting bio-terrorism a move timed to interfere with Carter's visit Castro got the respected former president to go to bat for him. In a courageous speech Carter challenged the United States to produce evidence of Cuban terrorism and insisted there was none. Of course, Castro also let Carter take to the Cuban airways and talk about democracy and human rights, knowing the openness would play well internationally and not change much domestically. Through it all, Castro had his eye on the prize: Carter's trip is the latest salvo in a battle to bring back American tourists, and while the battle hasn't yet been won, the P.R. value of the visit is enormous.

HUTCHINSON ENCYCLOPEDIA Carter, Jimmy 39th president of the USA 197781, a Democrat. Features of his presidency were the return of the Panama Canal Zone to Panama, the introduction of an amnesty programme for deserters and draft dodgers of the Vietnam War, and the Camp David Agreements for peace in the Middle East. He was defeated by Ronald Reagan in 1980. During the 1990s he emerged as a mediator and peace negotiator, securing President Aristide's safe return to Haiti in October 1994. In August 1999 he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Carter was born in Plains, Georgia, and served in the navy as a physicist until 1953, when he took over the family peanut business. He entered politics in 1962 as a Georgia state senator, and in 1970 was elected governor. In 1976 he won the Democratic presidential nomination and went on to a narrow victory over Gerald Ford. His failure to be re-elected owed much to the seizure of US embassy staff in Tehran, Iran, as hostages by a Shiite Muslim group, as well as to an economic downturn.

    INAUGURAL ADDRESS
    THURSDAY, JANUARY 20, 1977
For myself and for our Nation, I want to thank my predecessor for all he has done to heal our land. In this outward and physical ceremony we attest once again to the inner and spiritual strength of our Nation. As my high school teacher, Miss Julia Coleman, used to say: "We must adjust to changing times and still hold to unchanging principles." Here before me is the Bible used in the inauguration of our first President, in 1789, and I have just taken the oath of office on the Bible my mother gave me a few years ago, opened to a timeless admonition from the ancient prophet Micah: "He hath showed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the Lord require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God." (Micah 6: 8) This inauguration ceremony marks a new beginning, a new dedication within our Government, and a new spirit among us all. A President may sense and proclaim that new spirit, but only a people can provide it. Two centuries ago our Nation's birth was a milestone in the long quest for freedom, but the bold and brilliant dream which excited the founders of this Nation still awaits its consummation. I have no new dream to set forth today, but rather urge a fresh faith in the old dream.

    Jimmy Carter
Jimmy Carter (James Earl Carter, Jr.) was born October 1, 1924, in the small farming town of Plains, Georgia. He grew up nearby in the community of Archery. His father, James Earl Carter, Sr., was a farmer and businessman; his mother, Lillian Gordy, a registered nurse. He was educated in the Plains public schools, attended Georgia Southwestern College and the Georgia Institute of Technology, and received a Bachelor of Science degree from the United States Naval Academy in 1946. He later did graduate work in nuclear physics at Union College. During his naval career he lived in many parts of the United States and served around the world, including the Far East. He rose to the rank of lieutenant (senior grade), working under Admiral Hyman Rickover in the development of the nuclear submarine program. When his father died in 1953, he resigned his commission and returned to Plains. In addition to working his own farm, he continued a small business of his father's, selling fertilizer and farm supplies. He did the manual labor while his wife Rosalynn kept the books. Carter's Warehouse grew into a profitable general-purpose seed and farm supply operation. Soon after his return to Plains, he became involved in the affairs of the community. He was chairman of the county school board and the first president of the Georgia Planning Association. In 1962 he was elected to the Georgia Senate. He waged his first gubernatorial campaign in 1966.
