Monday, June 24, 2002 Disdain for Daljit, Ann Landers Remembered, Eat Up and Get Out posted: 2002-06-24 Disdain for Daljit "I tried so hard to like Daljit Dhaliwal..." writes Rachel Cooke. "But, boy, was she uptight." Cooke's unapologetically hostile profile of Dhaliwal, the British newscaster who has become something of a cult figure in the U.S. as host of ITN's now-cancelled World News for Public Television , appeared in the UK Guardian on Sunday. Dhaliwal's posh accent and good looks have inspired Esquire features , breathless fan sites and frequent declarations of love from David Letterman, but Cooke won't be watching when the newscaster starts her new job hosting CNN's international broadcast: a meeting between the two women apparently could not have gone worse. Dhaliwal "speaks in a very clear but slightly archaic, affected way, like a minor member of the royal family addressing a very stupid child," Cooke writes. The "small and stern" newscaster "treat[ed] even the most innocuous questions as personal insults.... Even an innocent question about her age went down like a bottle of gin at an AA meeting." The late columnist (real name: Eppie Lederer) "had a thirst for knowledge, an insatiable curiosity," recalls editor Rick Kogan in the

    Press Release
    WOM/1192
SPECIAL EVENT ON ‘WOMEN UNITING FOR PEACE’ HELD AT HEADQUARTERS ON OCCASION OF INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY
Through education and tradition, from generation to generation, women had passed on the culture of peace, Secretary-General Kofi Annan said at a special event at Headquarters this morning entitled “Women Uniting for Peace”, which was held on the occasion of International Women’s Day. Women, who knew the price of war so well, were often better equipped to resolve or prevent it, he said. When society collapsed, women played a critical role in ensuring that life went on. When ethnic tensions caused conflict, women tended to build bridges rather than walls. When considering the implications of war and peace, women thought first of their children and their children’s future before themselves. United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Mary Robinson said that women’s participation in all levels of government must become an “unremarkable” feature of public life. It was especially important to recognize women’s central role in conflict resolution. Indeed, such negotiations must involve women, and take into account their needs at the beginning of post-conflict reconstruction, not years after the event. In that respect, she said “we have to do much better”.

Music channel’s loss is filmdom’s gain?
    Sushma Reddy: Ready for Bollywood
I F things go the way they are going, chances are music channels will soon be running out of VJs. Most of them seem to be looking for alternative careers in films. And despite the fact most of their films are flopping. When she danced into the hearts of viewers with her Chhaiyya Chhaiyya number opposite Shah Rukh Khan in Dil Se , Malaika was deluged with similar Bollywood offers for dance numbers. Nikhil Chinappa and Sophiya Haque paired in Sunhil Sippy’s Snip! But the film failed to set the box office on fire. Malaika’s younger sister Amrita starred opposite Fardeen Khan in the flop Kitne Door Kitne Pass but she still has two untitled films opposite Govinda and Salman Khan.
