David Dixon
Knoxville, Tennessee
dixond4@ten-nash.ten.k12.tn.us Band Director Stuff:
A native of Shelbyville, Tennessee, I've taught band in Knoxville, Tennessee since fall 1975. I'm currently the director at Gresham Middle School and an assistant director at Knoxville Central High School. I've received several awards and honors: Knoxville Downtown Rotary Club Secondary Educator of the Year for Knox County in 1995, A Knoxville Chamber of Commerce "Best" Award in 1997, special recognition from the Knox County Board of Education in fall 1997 for having the highest percentage band enrollment of any county middle school, and numerous superior and excellent ratings in concert and jazz ensemble festival performances with my groups. Performing:
I primarily play jazz saxophone and "classical" bassoon. I've played in a wide variety of commercial, jazz, and religious settings during my years in Knoxville. A long-time Union Musician, I've performed for area symphonies, jazz bands, ice show, circuses, and the odd vacuum cleaner salesman convention. Due to my current technology and music technology activites, I'm on indefinite hiatus from active performing. Arranging/Composing:
Music Technology:

I've experimented quite a lot with integration of technology in a music classroom. More details concerning this may be found elsewhere in this web site. As an outgrowth of this, I've written articles for the Tennessee Musician, the journal of the Tennessee Music Educators Association and presented sessions at state and regional technology and music conferences. In 1995 my classroom was featured with some ten others across the state in a Tennessee State Department of Education documentary film on the Tennessee Twenty-First Century Classroom Project.

B revity, the aphorism has it, is the soul of wit. So where does that leave Thomas Pynchon, whose current offering weighs in at close to eight hundred pages - and of often-impenetrable stylized "old english" text, no less? The real Charles Mason and Jeremiah Dixon, America's original sub-dividers, took upon themselves the promethean task of imposing the first trace of order upon the wilderness that was the new world, drawing their famous line demarcating north and south. With his fanciful re-imagining of Messrs. Mason and Dixon, Pynchon has created a veritable universe, similarly bewildering and untamed, for readers to divide and conquer if they can. is a sprawling muddle of historical fact, surreal fancy, fable, fantasy, and occasional silliness, underpinned by the quiet insistence - supported, at times, more by faith than evidence - that somehow it all can make sense; that somehow, given enough courage, dogged determination, or blind luck, order can be either alchemically divined from chaos or forced upon it. Like American civilization, both past and present.

    December 30, 1998 From David S. Dixon
    ddixon@swcp.com
Dan and I started as graduate students together and shared an office in Weir Hall for the '87-'88 academic year. I went on to finish my Master's at UNM, but kept in touch with Dan from time to time. Dan and I and two or three other astrophysics graduates (Rich, Karen, who else?) weathered Dr. Petschek's graduate E&M course together. This course was also known as "Jackson", after the author of the text, or "The Cycle Of Death" because every week was like a dissertation defense. It's the one course that will make any physics graduate wince with pain on recollection. Dan was the stellar performer, the guy who stayed up all night to get the homework just right (no one gets Jackson homework just right). He also got an A from Dr. Petschek, who would rather have a root canal than give an A. My most immediate recollection of Dan was when he and I went to the New Mexico State Fair in the fall of '87. We walked the Midway for hours while Dan studied each of the arcade games the shooting gallery, the baseball toss, the dart throw assessing odds and payback and feasibility. He finally settled on the dart throw, and won (of course) a stuffed animal. I have a photo of him showing it off there on the Midway. Dan spent much of that year deciding on a hammer dulcimer. First, deciding if it really was the instrument he wanted to play. Then, deciding on the best one to buy. Dan elicited my advice as a musician. We went through catalogs and flyers and classified ads and descriptions of every kind.
