    11. Burial Or Cremation — Does It Matter? : Donald Howard (Booklet)

How should Christians dispose of the bodies of their loved ones after death? Does the Bible give us authoritative guidance on this question, or are we free to decide on the basis of pragmatic arguments, or even personal taste? Donald Howard is convinced that the Scriptures do give a clear answer to this question: Burial alone has the endorsement of God’s Word, and that Word, not tradition, sentiment or custom, must direct us in both our living and our dying. It is the writer’s firm belief that burial alone gives specific testimony to the Christian doctrine of the resurrection of the dead. The author traces the history of burial through the Old Testament to the culminating example of Christ’s burial and resurrection, discusses the practice of cremation in the modern world, and gives wise counsel on the need to grieve and to plan for our own funeral. His whole approach is based on the glorious privilege of being united to Christ in His death, burial, and resurrection.
At last! Someone is speaking out on the issue of burial and cremation... This is must reading in our day, as more and more Christians turn to cremation for simply pragmatic reasons. A terrific booklet!

    Menzel, Donald Howard (1901-1976)
American astrophysicist and director of the Harvard Observatory (1954-66) who early in his career studied the surface properties of Mars and, in 1955, together with Fred Whipple, presented a maritime model of Venus (see Venus, life on ). Menzel openly argued the case against the extraterrestrial hypothesis alsmot single-handedly, in the 1950s and '60s, first presenting his opinions on unidentified flying objects to Air Force officials in April 1952. Although he believed that the many reported sightings could be explained by mundane objects, he "saw no strong reason against the idea that planets inhabited by super-beings should not exist in great abundance" in the universe.

Menzel, Donald Howard US physicist and astronomer whose work on the spectrum of the solar chromosphere revolutionized much of solar astronomy. He was one of the first scientists to combine astronomy with atomic physics.
Menzel was born in Florence, Colorado, and studied at the University of Denver. At Princeton University as a graduate assistant, he learned astrophysics from Henry Russell, the co-originator of the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram. In 1932, Menzel joined Harvard University Observatory, where he was to become director some 30 years later. The coronagraph he constructed there was the beginning of High Altitude Observatory for solar physics research. During his career Menzel took part in the setting-up or development of several observatories in the USA. He retired from Harvard 1971 to become scientific director of a company manufacturing antennae for communications and radioastronomy.
In addition to this work, Menzel devised a technique for computing the temperature of planets from measurements of water cell transmissions and he made important contributions to atmospheric geophysics, radio propagation, and even lunar nomenclature. He also held patents on the use of gallium in liquid ball bearings and on heat transfer in atomic plants.

Donald Howard freed after 22 years
    by Jean Stockwell
The life sentence being served by 57-year-old Donald Howard for the 1977 murder of his wife Shirleen, has turned out to be a 22-year sentence. Howard, who once lived at 375 West Fifth St., and co-owned the local Coast to Coast Store with his wife, was released from prison Sept. 21, 2000 to Ramsey County. Tuesday morning Winona County Attorney Chuck MacLean said he was caught off guard by the release. He said he has not received information from the Department of Corrections about Howard's release, and that the last correspondence received from the state agency was five years ago when Howard's plea for early release was denied. MacLean said he is trying to contact the DOC to find out why Winona County was not informed. For the past two years MacLean has been waging an ongoing battle with the DOC to keep counties informed of inmate release, and to honor sentences imposed by local judges. Shirleen Howard was found shot to death in the basement of the Howard home August 13, 1977. She had been shot in the head twice with a .45 caliber semi-automatic pistol. She was 32 and had two daughters ages nine and seven. Bruce Webber, 36, was found guilty of being the hired gun. Police said Howard gave Webber a diamond ring and $1,500 in cash for the murder. He remains imprisoned in a Minnesota correctional facility.
