Starting with Jennifer Ringley ( JenniCAM - a $15/year pay for view site), the current site-du-jour is DotComGuy. While lacking classical entertainment drama (generated by compressing day or weeklong activity into half hour tightly edited segments), the always on cyber-venue possesses a certain charm not found on television. Some Background On January 1, 2000, 26 year old Mr. M. Maddox, moved into a Dallas townhouse with nothing but a laptop. His objective was to demonstrate that an average person could "live off the Internet for a year and never leave the apartment." The place had been prepped with approximately two dozen video cameras and high-speed access to the Internet - nothing more. Totally immersed in the project, the Texas bachelor changed his name to (are you ready?) DotComGuy . Bankrolled by advertisers (UPS taking a primary role), DotComGuy launched a buying spree evidenced by furnishing that appear when a visitor enters the "

(CNN) DotComGuy joined the CNN.com chat room on January 13, 2000, to discuss his resolution to live entirely off the internet for one year. DotComGuy joined the chat by telephone from Texas and CNN.com provided a typist. The following is an edited transcript of the chat. Chat Moderator: Welcome DotComGuy! dotcomguy: Thank you for joining me here at cnn.com. It is truly exciting to be here in a chat on one of the world's largest news websites. Chat Moderator: Can you give anyone who may be unfamiliar with you some basic information on what you're attempting to do here? dotcomguy: For one year I will be living in my home in Dallas, TX, and surviving solely from goods and services purchased from the internet. We invite the world to watch my journey at www.dotcomguy.com, interact with other dotcomheads, and share experiences about e-commerce. Question from: JuliaGoolia: In your quest to lock yourself in your home in order to prove the merits of e-commerce, did you ever consider what this may do to increase the freedom of those who are homebound due to disabilities? Also, do you think that your experiment may be seen as taking the situation of those who are homebound a little too lightly?

Dotcomguy Drops 'Dotcom' From Name,
Now He's Just 'Guy' DALLAS, TEXAS (SatireWire.com) DotComGuy According to Guy, whose one year in online self-isolation ends Jan. 1, the change more accurately reflects the true nature of his diversifying personal interests. That, and he was worried he wouldn't get laid with a name like DotComGuy. "Initially, having DotCom in my name heightened my status," said Guy, who legally changed his name from Mitch Maddox to DotComGuy before entering virtual seclusion last Jan. 1. "But now it's suddenly like I'm just some loser who is little more than a pathetic symbol of Internet hype." Guy denied the loser label might also refer to being a 27-year-old single male who hasn't left his house for a year. dotcomguy to Live Off Net for Year
http://www.editors-service.com/articlearchive/dotcom2000.html
DotComGuy to Live Off Net for Year DALLAS, TX. — The Net has found its ultimate flagpole sitter, and he is named DotComGuy — a former UPS computing systems manager who is not leaving his house during the entire year and will live entirely from e-commerce items shipped to his home. His restrictions are not quite like those of the famous Biosphere project; the DotComGuy “compound” house is not a self-contained environment. And he can have friends in. But he can’t leave, and he must “live off the Net” for one year. The twenty-something DotComGuy (his new legal name) has a number of prominent e-commerce sponsors, including: NetBank.com, PeaPod (a Net grocer), Mall.com, Bizland, Borders Books, FitLinxx.com, and UPS to deliver goods from the outside world to the DotCom compound. And he, of course, has already garnered much public and media attention. He has done over 400 news interviews in less than a month. And during one 12-hour period, his website had 900,000 visitors, DotCom said. Among other entertainments to keep himself distracted, DotCom plans to hold regular “Karaoke Nights” in his compound. He writes the following in his journal of Jan. 22 about his first such effort. “I think I need to be clearer with guests that our viewers expect our events to start on time. It’s not a regular party; it’s a global event,” DotCom complains, but added. “We were honored to have some celebrity look-alikes sing for us. Among them, Cher, Elton John, and Elvis.”

At noon on January 1, 2000, Mitch Maddox is going virtual. He will give up his real world life and disappear into a cyberworld to prove that he can fill all his needs via e-commerce for an entire year. At the fateful hour, Maddox will enter a two-bedroom house in Dallas, Texas with nothing but a computer, and he will cease to be Mitch Maddox. As cameras in every room roll, and the whole world watches, Mitch Maddox will join the elite few who are known universally by one name and one name only. Madonna. Cher. Monica. And now DotComGuy. The E-Commerce Times asked the crucial question: "Do you have a significant other?" DotComGuy laughed and said, "No, I don't have a girlfriend." We countered by asking if he would find one online, since he can have visitors. "No," insisted DotComGuy. "Any woman who visited me would have to keep her makeup on, since the cameras are always watching." Well, not always. DotComGuy, who legally changed his name earlier this year, can cap the camera in his bedroom at night. He can also cap the camera in his bathroom, although we do get to watch him shave and brush his teeth. "Don't worry," DotComGuy assured us, "This is family entertainment."

Dying Sponsors ... Related Stories Is there any truth to the rumor that DotComGuy changed his name again to ObviousGuy? The fact is that when he emerged from his self-imposed cyber-captivity, the world reacted with deafening silence, a big old yawn. And for good reason. DotComGuy did prove that the Web could provide a soul with all its worldly needs. He proved that man could live by Internet access alone. But no one doubted that. And maybe more to the point, no one in their right mind wants to live that way. That brings us to the lesson for e-commerce in the DotComGuy experience: Stop trying to prove just how much the Web can or will change our lives and start talking more about how it can make our lives better. 'I Like My Life' Think of the commercial with the truck driver being coached by the purveyor of the "wireless Internet." The driver expresses concern about what he's heard namely that the
