Though she is well regarded in film, Dukakis has spent the bulk of her distinguished career on-stage as an actress and a director. She is also a highly respected drama teacher. The daughter of Greek immigrants, Dukakis once worked as a physical therapist. Her interest in acting came after appearing in summer stock and then taking adult-ed classes in drama at Boston University, where she graduated with a master's in Fine Arts. After graduation, she began her theatrical career and then co-founded Boston's renowned Charles Playhouse. Dukakis made her film debut in director Robert Rossen 's last film Lillith (1964). She continued to make sporadic and undistinguished appearances in movies though much of the '80s, but did not gain notice until 1987 when she won an Academy Award for playing

In addition, she will preside over a question and answer session with more than 500 School of Theatre students during an all-school meeting on Thursday, February 20. Her residency will conclude February 21. Prior to her residency, on February 15, Dukakis will perform Martin Sherman’s one-woman play, "Rose," as part of Tallahassee’s Seven Days of Opening Nights festival. "While most of our audiences will recognize Olympia Dukakis from her prolific work as a film and television actress, her talents and passions for performing are deeply rooted in her training as a stage actress," said FSU School of Theatre Dean Steven Wallace. "Her career truly epitomizes the working actor who has a vast toolbox of skills, which we try to instill in our student actors. The School of Theatre at FSU is excited to welcome Olympia to the family of contributing professionals who visit our campus annually to share their experience and wisdom with our students." During a career that spans over 40 years, Dukakis has worked as an actress, director, producer, teacher and activist. She won national acclaim for her outstanding performance in the Norman Jewison film "Moonstruck," which also earned her an Academy Award, New York Film Critics Award, Los Angeles Film Critics Award and Golden Globe Award. Having appeared in more than 40 feature films, Dukakis captured the hearts of audiences through her work in "Steel Magnolias," "The Cemetery Club" and "Mr. Holland’s Opus." Her work in film has been recognized with several Emmy, Screen Actors Guild and British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) nominations.
