e-mail this article Crass W hat is it about a picture of Julia Roberts with a baby on her hip that seems so irresistible? This would be, of course, one of the images that's become so instantly familiar through its heavy use to promote her new movie, Erin Brockovich . Consider, just for a minute, the implications of such a campaign, what it suggests about the U.S. culture's changing attitudes toward single working class moms, or more likely, what it suggests about unchanging attitudes toward fave-fantasy girl Julia Roberts. Then again, maybe these are the same effects after all. For Erin Brockovich Screenwriter Susannah Grant ( Pocahontas and Ever After Erin Brockovich (which underwent reported but uncredited touch-ups by Richard [ Bridges of Madison County ] LaGravenese) appears to respect its spunky protagonist but does not omit how unnerving and imperfect she can be. This imperfection is registered in predictable ways: Erin is occasionally overzealous about her job; in particular, she misses the baby's first word but is duly punished when George tells her about it over the cellphone and she cries alone in her car on the way home from a long day "getting signatures." She can also be thoughtless, as when, angry at George, she calls him out for not having a job; he responds by losing his until-then incessant patience. She can also be sloppy, silly, cute, annoying, all shaping Erin as the Hollywood incarnation of the Admirable Underclass. She's never so dreadful or "other" that middle-class audience members wouldn't recognize themselves in her. Remember Michelle Pfeiffer in

e-mail this article Fairy Tales W henever you see a man looking anguished and alone in the opening shot of a film, and especially if he's surrounded by wide open space dirt, snow, sky, whatever it's a pretty good bet that what's coming will not be pleasant. I'm thinking Fargo Paris, Texas , even 2001: A Space Odyssey . Now, conjure this image of the man alone in a dusty, windy setting, compounded by the fact that the man in question is Jack Nicholson, looking as ravaged as he always does these days. You can only grit your teeth and settle in, knowing you're in for some unpleasantness. The Pledge , director Sean Penn's second collaboration with Nicholson, begins like this, and proceeds to become increasingly dense and disturbing. While it's never uninteresting, and its story moves sinuously, quite deft and engaging, compared to the more lumbering pace that characterized Penn's first two films, The Indian Runner and The Crossing Guard , it eventually becomes overbearing. This isn't to say that the first two films aren't often fascinating or full of intense, difficult ideas, for they surely are. It's also not to say that

Passion. Love. Mystery. Poetry. Possession comprises all these words and more as it unravels an enigma plaguing the romance community.
The story is about Roland Michell (Eckhart; Erin Brockovich ) and Maud Bailey (Paltrow;
Bounce
), two literature professors' who join together in search for the truth behind famous 19th century poet Randolph Henry Ash (Northam) and the possibility of an extramarital affair. They discover through his and poet Christabel LaMotte's poems, that the two were indeed having an affair. While tracing Ash's and LaMotte's journey via their poems, Michell and Bailey begin to form their own relationship.
The two have a chemistry and a likeability to keep the audience's attention through some of the *cough* crap *cough* poetry. Now, don't get me wrong, I enjoy some poetry but to be honest the over-the-top love stuff in the film gets old after a while. It tended to drag the movie on longer than it should have but being that the movie is about the passion in the poetry, it was not a major factor. That said, many people will enjoy the poetry, I myself just got sick of it after a while.
The look of Possession is great. Director LaBute and cinematographer Jean-Yves Escoffier brings the beautiful landscapes throughout Europe both now and in the past. Escoffier and LaBute worked together in 2000's
