Eddie can't control everything
By Peter Hanlon
September 27 2002
Collingwood is given next to no chance of winning tomorrow, yet is still a far better bet than Jason Cloke was of walking free last night. And then Eddie McGuire took the stand. The clock showed a tick under 7.30pm when McGuire greeted appeals chairman Peter O'Callaghan. The Queen's counsel had given short shrift to the flimsy evidence conjured by the Magpies over the previous two hours, but his haste to be elsewhere was nothing compared to McGuire's; down the road at Melbourne Park, The Footy Show 's grand finale was 90 minutes away. He announced himself as the Collingwood president, but also a custodian of the game. This was not a time for semantics or technicalities, said McGuire, but to acknowledge that an accident had happened. There had been 36 of them on Saturday alone, more commonly known as free kicks, and probably many more that were missed. McGuire ventured that Cloke knew all about accidents and duty of care, that he could write a book on the matter should the chairman be interested. His mother had been "smashed to pieces" in a car accident several years ago. His cousin and close mate had jogged on to a football ground and not walked since.

Mark W. Davis

by Geoff Young The Keltner List is a set of 15 questions posed by Bill James in an effort to determine whether a player is deserving of enshrinement in the Hall of Fame. Here we'll examine each of these questions as they pertain to one of the players on the 2003 ballot, LHP Mark Davis 1. Was he ever regarded as the best player in baseball? Did anybody, while he was active, ever suggest that he was the best player in baseball? No. Not close. 2. Was he the best player on his team? Davis probably was the Padres' best pitcher in 1988 (he secured 19 win shares; Eric Show placed second among pitchers, with 14); only Tony Gwynn (23) and Roberto Alomar (22) earned more win shares that season. In 1989, the year Davis won the Cy Young Award, Jack Clark was the Padres' best hitter (149 OPS+ in just under 600 PA), while Davis ranked with Bruce Hurst (130 ERA+ in 245 IP) and Ed Whitson (132 ERA+ in 227 IP) as the best pitchers. Beyond those two seasons, Davis wasn't close to being the best player on his team. 3. Was he the best player in baseball at his position? Was he the best player in the league at his position?

THE COLUMBUS BASEBALL BEAT WRITERS Although area sport pages have only had sports by-lines since 1914, Columbus newspaper scribes have changed the face of American sports for well over a century. They have walked out of our press boxes to help create major league baseball, minor league baseball, the NFL, the NBA, to write rule books, to become league presidents, to own ball clubs and run ball clubs. Others have stayed to become Central Ohio icons. Among the anonymous contributors to the early coverage of Columbus baseball was Jimmy Williams. Williams help create and then ran as Secretary-Treasurer the American Association. A major league from 1882-1891. In 1892 he created the Western League, which is now known as the American League. Jimmy created minor league baseball with the International Association in 1876. He wrote much of the current language in the rulebooks and managed both St. Louis and Cleveland. In 1890, the players revolted and formed their own league. Every team in the National League, the American Association and the Players League lost money. Baseball turned to its Father, Harry Chadwick to sort out the mess and save the sport. Chadwick told The Sporting News that what they needed to do is to go to Columbus, Ohio and seek out Jimmy Williams. Chadwick said Williams was the only man for the job. In what has become their legacy, the owners ignored the advice.
Joe Carr covered the team for the Ohio State Journal and went on to create the NFL. In 1925, Carr along with George Halas and Preston Marshall created the American Basketball League. Now known as the NBA. He served as president of both leagues. The leagues’ corporate offices were on East Broad Street, across from the State House, until his death.

http://www.electricearl.com/insley.html
Mark Insley is one of the mainstays of
the local country/roots music scene. His style
spans the full gamut from bluegrass to rock.
His version of "Six Days On the Road"
sounds like Ray Price backed by
the Sex Pistols.

This is an old page that I did in 1997.
Be sure to see Mark's new OFFICIAL page at
rusticrecords.com
A Look Back: April 24, 1997 at the Troubadour
The set list:
  • Don't Act So Surprised
  • Fast Train to Nowhere
  • Day of the Dead
  • Paper Thin Disguise
  • What A Shame
  • Lay Your Burden Down
  • Six Feet Under
  • The Devil's Knocking
  • encore: Six Days On the Road
Mark Insley is a straight-ahead country performer in the tradition of Buck and Dwight. No lasers and smoke machines here, just damn good music, just like back in the days when you couldn't use a fancy video to sell a crappy song. As befits his eclectic nature, Mark's band for this show included ex-X guitarmeister Tony Gilkyson and members of the blues band Mojo Monkeys (Billy Watts on Telecaster and steel guitar, David Raven on drums). Gilkyson's playing was surprisingly tasteful. We had heard reports that he was blowing away the rest of the band in rehearsals. Maybe they got him to turn it down a notch. Highlights of the set included Mark's moving ballad "Paper-Thin Disguise" (deserves to be a standard) and a tejano -like "Day of the Dead." Co-writer Eddie Cunningham shared vocals on "Lay Your Burden Down."

School Record: 272-114 (12 seasons)
Eddie Sutton has achieved many feats in his 42-year career as a head basketball coach. His most recent accolade is his nomination for induction into the National Basketball Hall of Fame.
Coach Sutton just finished his 12th season at his alma mater, and 32nd season overall at the Division I level. He recently became just the 14th coach in Division I history to record 700 wins in a career. Oklahoma State's 85-80 win over the Texas Longhorns in Austin on Feb. 20 was a milestone that few will reach.
Under his guidance, OSU has advanced to postseason play in 11-of-12 years, and has won 20 games or more 10 times. In the 2000-01 season, Sutton passed John Wooden and Denny Crum into 14th place (sixth among active coaches) in career victories. There is only one active coach (Bob Knight) ranked ahead of Sutton in both victories and winning percentage, and OSU's boss ranks behind only Dean Smith in victories through 32 or fewer years of coaching. Sutton, who previously coached at Creighton, Arkansas and Kentucky, was the first coach in NCAA history to lead four different schools to the national tournament and was joined in the exclusive club by Lefty Driesell and Jim Harrick following the 2000-01 campaign.
