Reading Comprehension II - Dame Edna Read the passage and then complete the exercise that follows. She is one of Australia's best known performers. A comedienne and entertainer, she has had regular TV shows and has performed on stage in Australia and England. Dame Edna has interviewed such famous people as Charlton Heston, Barry Manilow, Jane Fonda, Sean Connery and many, many more. In the 1970s the then Prime Minister of Australia, Gough Whitlam, awarded her the title of 'Dame'; a high British honour. Her motto is 'I'm sorry, but I care'. She is a flambouyant dresser, wearing elaborate evening gowns and outlandish glasses. Her trademark is a bunch of those famous flowers, Gladioli which she tosses in to the audience. The funny thing about Dame Edna is that she is really a man, the lesser known comedian and performer, Barry Humphries. Read the sentences below and then choose the best phrase to complete each sentence.Careful, some of the questions are tricky. Dame Edna has probably been famous for

The fifth instalment of the Harry Potter series will be the biggest seller yet when it appears on bookshop shelves in June, publisher Bloomsbury predicted yesterday. ¿WASSA DAME EDNA DEPT.? Dame Edna? Dame Shmedna! Answering A Fool According To His/Her Folly n the last few days I have been literarily flooded with comments and questions about Dame Edna and the offensive and impertinent comments that she made in Vanity Fair (magazine) about Hispanics… (such text included at the end of this letter).
Well, first… here's what I think about Dame Edna...
Dame Edna is… (she’s actually a wrinkled old man from Australia named Barry Humphries)
• She’s …so ugly that when she was born, the doctor slapped her parents, the nurses and himself.
• She’s so ugly… that when she joined an ugly contest, they said "Sorry, no professionals."
• She’s so ugly… she looked out the window and got arrested for mooning.
• She’s so ugly… just after she was born, her mother said "What a treasure!" and her father said “Yes, go bury it.”
• She’s so ugly… they push her face into dough to make cookies.

Dame Edna accused of racism
By Robert Lusetich, Los Angeles correspondent
February 10, 2003 BARRY Humphries and his subversive humour have caused an outcry in the US, where the powerful Hispanic lobby has accused the Australian satirist of racism.
Vanity Fair , the magazine for which Humphries pens an advice column in the guise of his alter ego Dame Edna Everage, is to apologise for comments considered degrading to Spanish-Americans. Humphries replied to a reader who wanted advice on which foreign language to study, saying friends had told him: "Everyone is going to be speaking Spanish in 10 years." Humphries-as-Edna would have none of this. "Forget Spanish," he wrote, "there's nothing in that language worth reading . . . as for everyone's speaking it, what twaddle! Who speaks it that you are really desperate to talk to? The help? Your leaf-blower?" Most domestic workers and gardeners in California are Mexican or Latin immigrants.

Christine Lavin's Special Dame Edna Version Of Petit Pan Au Chocolat Recipe
(Baked during Dame Edna's last performance on Broadway for this year, July 2, 2000)
I am posting this on my Web site, since I plan to eat it during the show on Sunday, as I anxiously await Dame Edna's telephone call. BTW I did bake this the day of her last Broadway performance....I don't make things up. On Sunday at 11:30 AM July 2nd, in a medium size glass bowl I dissolved 3/4 cup hot water, 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger and 1 packet yeast. I stirred it, then added 1 cup of all-purpose unbleached flour. I stirred that with a big wooden spoon til it was all mixed up.
Then I covered the bowl tightly with plastic wrap and left it out on the counter when I went out to meet my friend Martha for brunch, on our way to the Booth Theater to see Dame Edna’s final performance.
She was even more brilliant than the first 24 times I saw this show. At the end, the crowd went crazy cheering and clapping and stomping Dame Edna came out in her bathrobe, thanked us profusely, then shooed us all home.

Dame Edna, the alter-ego of Australian comic Barry Humphries, has titillated audiences from London to Broadway with her, rather his, hilarious full-audience-participation comedy. The Dame's Broadway debut received the 2000 Tony Award for Live Theatrical Event and raves from critics: "An evening of long and loud laughs." (New York Daily News) , "The funniest and cleverest show in town." (New York Post)

Front Balcony $38.00
Rear Balcony $28.00
Tickets for prime seating slightly higher. Fresh from her critically acclaimed season with her little pupil on FOX-TV’s Ally McBeal , Dame Edna will tour her very special evening on caring and sharing. When asked for the inspiration behind this new national tour, Dame Edna exclaimed, “I have fallen in love with America and it adores me back. People go into withdrawal whenever I am off their TV screen or the stage of their theatre. I have insisted on coming to see you possums and put much needed “Vitamin E”—E is for Edna—into your entertainment diet. Remember, I stretch those laugh muscles no other show can reach! You need me more than you think, and spookily enough, I need you!”
A NIGHT WITH DAME EDNA follows her wildly successful 2001 tour, DAME EDNA: The Royal Tour, which received a special Tony Award for Live Theatrical Event 2000, as well as a Drama Desk Award and an Outer Critics Circle Special Achievement Award. Additionally, audiences across the US voted her their favorite touring performer and by popular vote, she was honored with a National Broadway Award.

Edna has her way with Houston
By CLIFFORD PUGH
"Hurricane Edna" blew into town Tuesday night and likely wreaked more havoc than Allison did. Nothing about Dame Edna Everage and Dame Edna: The Royal Tour was politically correct. In a one-woman show that ran more than two and a half hours, the Australian "megastar" insulted the handicapped, deaf people, illegal aliens, the unfortunates trapped in Jones Hall's balcony seats, local celebrities like Mayor Lee Brown and Ninfa Laurenzo, and her audience's dressing habits. The show, which continues through Sunday as part of the Houston Broadway Series, centers on a glamorous, purple-haired grande dame with rhinestone-studded eyeglasses and an opinion about everything. The alter ego of Australian actor Barry Humphries, Edna emerged as a Melbourne housewife in 1956 and evolved into Dame Edna, whose star presence transformed the huge symphony hall into an audacious tea party.

In video close-up, Dame Edna explained: "You see, Liza , after your triumphant first night at the Palace Theater, when you did your wonderful, wonderful show, I came back and we cuddled a bit, didn't we? We hugged each other, and I was crying." Here the emotional Dame Edna stifled a dry sob. "I didn't tell you, Liza, but I'm going to tell you now, I think if I was there in the flesh, I'd break down." Going back "a long time," Ms. Everage recalled a time when "I was a very, very young aspiring actress, no more than a rather precocious and sophisticated teenager" who had won a competition to go to Hollywood. There, sitting by the pool one day, no doubt looking smashing in a tank suit, Ms. Everage met Ms. Minnelli's father

40. Dame Edna
dame edna THE ROYAL TOUR. dame edna is a refreshing wind of irreverence blowingdown from the northern flanks of Shubert Alley eight times a week.
http://www.broadwaybeat.com/russell/rusedna.htm
BROADWAY SNAP-SHOT, 22 October 1999
by Russell Bouthiller
DAME EDNA: THE ROYAL TOUR As the song says, "There is nothing like a dame." This notion is gently driven home on the spear of a gladiola in DAME EDNA: THE ROYAL TOUR "The Show that Listens." Dame Edna Everage, the internationally legendary sensation from points down under, is presently holding court for the benefit of us humble New Yorkers. This one time Australian housewifenow, megastardelivers a command performance nightly at the lovely little Booth (pronounced with a soft "th;" cf. smooth) Theatre. There's no plot to follow here. According to Edna, this is to facilitate the dulled minds of her senior patrons who have a tendency to wander. If this comment seems a bit politically incorrect, that's just the tip of the iceberg. This Dame is something of a Don Rickels in rhinestone or a Jackie Mason in mauve, though her barbs prick with loving care. Thankfully, she holds no allegiance to our nation's collectively constipated sense of humor. I'd imagine the only use she'd have for our sacred cows is to provide a smart hand-bag and a pair of shoes to match. Dame Edna is a refreshing wind of irreverence blowing down from the northern flanks of Shubert Alley eight times a week. To go through the rather mad structure of her show would only crush the perky blooms of her outlandish routines, many of which change with each performance. These fungible flourishes are the brainchild of actor Barry Humphries, who, according to an interview in the New York Times, is indeed Dame Edna, though Dame Edna will not concede to being Barry Humphries. Such controversy can only boost ticket sales for a show where shrewdness abounds. I will divulge that sitting in the front rows of the theatre might leave one exposed to a drop of ridicule, all delivered with earnest affection. It's not that Dame Edna is cruel. Heaven forbid. In fact, she ribs her audience because she is genuinely concerned. As she points out, you won't get such attention from the stars of
