Memo Menos
DAME EDNA EVEREGE brought her ROYAL TOUR to Los Angeles last night, and although it is essentially the same ROYAL TOUR that has been kicking around the country, minus Los Angeles for several years now, it was still hysterical! Despite some difficulty with the spontaneous telephone bit, the show, particularly the monologue from the DAME
DAME EDNA
is a mix between JOAN RIVERS, DON RICKLES and EUPHENDENIA DOUBTFIRE, dear. She sings and dances, and has a retinue of EDNAETTES , some of the cutest hardbodied showgirls in show business today, but her strength is in the scripted jokes and the spontaneous banter with the audience, in that order.
At times Wednesday, EDNA struggled with the practicalities of carrying on an intimate conversation with an audience of several thousand Angelinos inside the "tucked away Schuuuuubert theata". It’s not easy work. Opening night had its bumps and potholes, and the DAME is not as quick or young on her sized 10 feet as she used to be. I mean that in the most flattering and loving way. Really, I do. The broad is funny, in a slower, more controlled way. What a joy to watch a megastar work in a disciplined, managed fashion.
MAMMA MIA I guess. (

THE PERFORMING ARTS CENTRE HONOURS DAME EDNA EVERAGE
"Over the last 18 years, the Arts Centre’s Performing Arts Museum has received many generous donations of material from Barry Humphries and his alter egos," said the Centre’s Chief Executive Tim Jacobs. "We are delighted therefore to present this exhibition as an outstanding focus on the great career of the international megastar, Dame Edna Everage," he said.
"The Arts Centre acknowledges that Dame Edna is too big a star to be confined to one space, so the whole of the Centre will take on a ‘megastar feel’. There will be gladioli in the foyers, an audio commentary by Dame Edna talking about her frocks and video footage of the star’s stage shows and television programmes. And foyer displays will trace the rise and rise of Edna Everage," Jacobs said.

Hispanics outraged by Dame Edna's remarks in Vanity Fair.
January 31, 2003 Hispanics, who are the largest minority group in the United States are a fast-growing, culturally-rich population who are fond of their heritage and native language, Spanish. But according to the flamboyant, wacky Dame Edna, there isn't a need to learn Spanish or speak to anyone who speaks Spanish because they are "leaf blowers" or "helpers" like maids. In this month's issue of Vanity Fair , which has Latina Salma Hayek on the front cover, Dame Edna pens a "Ask Dame Edna" column and a reader asks her which foreign language should she/he learn? The reader says that everyone around me is saying "learn Spanish" and notes that even President Bush speaks Spanish. The reader then concludes his question with "Are we all going to have to speak Spanish?" Dame Edna responds with: "Forget Spanish. There's nothing in that language worth reading except Don Quixote, and a quick listen to the CD of Man of La Mancha will take care of that. There was a poet named Garcia Lorca, but I'd leave him on the intellectual back burner, if I were you. As for everyone's speaking it, what twaddle! Who speaks it that you are really desperate to talk to? The help? Your leaf blower? Study French or German, where there are at least a few books worth reading, or, if you're American, try English."

DAME EDNA: Well, I love it, of course, and they need me so much on that lovely show! I've watched "Ally McBeal" for many, many years and I thought that, as much as I like it, it needed glamour. It needed an attractive, well-built woman ... everyone is so thin! I feel enormous on that show, but I do bring a lot of glitter and pizzazz to "Ally" and I think they're grateful! Between you and me, they're pathetically grateful that I'm on their show.

Dame Edna: The Royal Tour Theatre Review by Fergus McGillicuddy New York - October 17, 1999
We are reassured right up front, in a boxed statement on the title page of the Playbill for Dame Edna: The Royal Tour - opening tonight at the Booth Theatre - that "This lovely program contains no marsupial products." Okay. We are also informed that, while "understudies or standbys never substitute for listed players unless a specific announcement for the appearance is made at the time of the performance," should something dreadful happen to the one and only Dame Edna Everage (aka Barry Humphries), we would be in the hands of one Mrs. Madge Allsop. For longtime fans of the incorrigible Dame Edna, who are all too well aware of the place Mrs. Allsop holds in the pantheon of characters created by Humphries, this is not a bit of news to be greeted with a great deal of enthusiasm. So it is with some sense of relief, not to mention euphoria, that after we are treated to a short set of film clips chronicling Dame Edna's ascension from Australian housewife to fame, fortune, and icon-hood, the curtain rises to reveal the legend herself. This is the defining image of the evening, this first sight of the Dame with her arms thrown wide, embracing the audience with aggressive self-confidence and in complete control of the moment. It's also an inspired bit of theatre. In these first few seconds, in which she makes her way down the rather overly extravagant white staircase to the foot of the stage, she has the audience in the palm of her hand.

Dame Edna: The Royal Tour and
Gypsy
Depending on your point of view, I am either a marvelous son or a highly sadistic one. You see, a few years ago, when I got my mother front row seats to see Dame Edna at the little Booth Theatre tucked away on Broadway, I also persuaded her to eschew the simple black sweater she thought about wearing and pick a silk jacket that was a riot of fuchsia and blue paisleys. I knew what the outcome was going to be: my mother would get picked on and torn apart by the Australian megastar, the incomparable Dame Edna. But you know, she loved it and is still thanking me for my involvement in one of the highlights of her theatergoing life. And how could she not? Being used by Dame Edna, the brain child and alter ego of actor/writer/comedian Barry Humphries, in her riotously hysterical and politically incorrect Dame Edna: The Royal Tour should be considered a badge of honor and something to talk about with one's grandchildren when we are withered and rocking in our chairs in the (hopefully) distant future. Dame Edna claims that her shows have healing properties, which is a blessed thing, as by the end of the night we are in convulsions from laughter with our sides split and funnybones hurting. Be warned, however: if the mere idea of audience participation makes you break out in a sweat, you would be well advised to avoid the front rows of whatever stage the grand Dame appears (men needn't worry, however; all slings and arrows of outrageous verbiage are aimed strictly at the fairer sex).

Guess what, Possums? Dame Edna's on Broadway. The hilarious persona of Australian comic Barry Humphries has taken her mauve-haired, over-sequined drag show to New York's Booth Theater and is drawing raves for her stream-of-consciousness, full-audience-participation musical show, Dame Edna: The Royal Tour , which opened Sunday. On this side of the pond, you might recognize the diva from her numerous appearances on the talk-show circuit (she's merrily reamed Joan Rivers and Roseanne , alike), as well as a 1991 NBC special called Dame Edna's Hollywood . Her Broadway debut, however, marks her biggest introduction to America. a d v e r t i s e m e n t
"The humor operates on more channels than a TV satellite, with lots of droll, intelligent satire of celebrity culture, show biz and political correctness," raves USA Today Humphries created Edna nearly 40 years ago, and since then she's rocketed to fame as the host of her own British talk show. She now considers herself a "megastar." The unstoppable Australian housewife has interviewed hundreds of stars and traveled round the globe, but The Royal Tour is her first stop on Broadway. One would never know that, however, by the way she works the crowd.

Dame Edna Everage has been recruited by TV comedy Ally McBeal to become a regular guest star after making two appearances on the show. The colourful star, known for her extravagant spectacles and racy innuendos, has already been seen on the show in the United States playing an "overtly eccentric older woman with purple hair".

Dame Edna is herself played by Australian comedian Barry Humphries. She will not appear in every episode, but will be a "recurring" guest star, according to Channel 4, the show's UK broadcaster. Viewers in the US have also recently seen rock star Jon Bon Jovi introduced as Ally's new love interest after Robert Downey Jr left the cast.

SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER THEATER CRITIC Dame Edna is tiring literally. After a half-hour of Edna's remorseless mirth, the body begins to hurt a little from laughing. THEATER REVIEW DAME EDNA: THE ROYAL TOUR PLAYWRIGHT: Barry Humphries
WHERE: The Moore Theater, 1932 Second Ave.
WHEN: Through May 13
TICKETS: After two hours of Edna's ceaseless hilarity, a person starts to feel giddy and exhausted. It's like being a 7-year-old and having a friend tickle you and tickle you and tickle you until you're limp and aching from laughing so much. Dame Edna is the creation of Australian actor Barry Humphries. He writes her lines. And then he puts on a buoyant wisteria-colored wig, rhinestone-studded glasses, a frock that is encrusted with gaudy glitter, shiny metallic pumps and voila! he's Dame Edna in person. He/she/they are currently appearing at the Moore Theatere. Humphries, inspired tickler that he is, has been doing Edna for 45 years. She is a clucking, gurgling, cooing widow with a radiant smile and a chilling glower. She is devastatingly witty and overpoweringly egotistical. Dame Edna chats with people in the front rows of the audience. Eventually she allows as how the audience/performer rapport has become markedly chummy, like two friends talking, "one of whom is much more interesting than the other."

SPECIAL TO THE POST-INTELLIGENCER The year 1978 was a bust for Barry and Edna. The boom year was 2000. And the boom keeps echoing. COMING UP DAME EDNA: THE ROYAL TOUR PLAYWRIGHT: Barry Humphries
WHERE: The Moore Theater,
1932 Second Ave.
WHEN: Opens Tuesday;
runs through May 13
TICKETS: Australian actor Barry Humphries' comical/satirical/musical character Dame Edna, following up on last year's Broadway triumph, is now in the midst of her "Royal Tour." It arrives Tuesday at the Moore Theater. Since 1955, Humphries has been doing Edna in one form or another. When he decided to give her a go in London, he was told that Edna is "too Australian," no one would get her humor. That proved not to be true. Then when Humphries decided to try New York, he was cautioned that Edna was "too British." "That really was not true," Humphries said in a phone interview earlier this week from Los Angeles. "We were in a theater off-Broadway, way off-Broadway, miles from anywhere, no other theaters around, no bars, no restaurants.
