Dale Evans Champion Apprentice In Capricornia Region DALE Evans was this week again named the Capricornia Region Champion Apprentice at the annual awards' night in Rockhampton. The award capped an outstanding year for Evans who also won the Most Notable Feat by an Apprentice after taking out the Rockhampton Newmarket (on May Royal) and Rockhampton Cup (Riva Rebel), then the Breeders' Plate (Kai Chow). An apprentice jockey has never before won the Newmarket-Cup double and only a handful of senior jockeys have managed this achievement. Dale rode 41 winners, 23 seconds and 32 thirds from a total of 257 rides throughout Queensland for the year ended November 30. He has also ridden seven metropolitan winners this season and has been riding regularly in the south-east corner where he is in demand, especially with his 3kg metropolitan allowance.

Dale Evans
Though she is best remembered as America's favorite cowgirl, Dale Evans spent her early years as a Big Band singer. Born Lucille Wood Smith in Uvalde, Texas, her name was changed at an early age to Frances Octavia Smith. Married at 14 and a mother at 15, she was divorced at 17 (some sources say widowed).
Intent on a singing career, she moved to Memphis and worked at an insurance company while taking occasional radio singing jobs. After another unhappy marriage, she moved to Louisville and became a popular singer on local radio. In 1936, she moved to Dallas and again found local success as a radio singer. She married a third time and moved to Chicago, where she began to attract increasing attention from both radio audiences and film industry executives. There she took the stage name Dale Evans and was hired as a vocalist by bandleader Anson Weeks
In the early forties, she signed with Twentieth Century Fox and made a few small film appearances, then was cast as leading lady to rising cowboy star Roy Rogers. In 1946, Rogers' wife died and Evans' marriage ended about the same time. A year later, they were married. Their marriage was dogged by tragedy, including the loss of three children before adulthood. She and Rogers starred on their own television programs during the fifties and sixties. She also wrote their famous theme song, ''Happy Trails.'' Dale Evans died from congestive heart failure on February 7, 2001.

The Story Behind "Happy Trails" Every cowboy had a theme song. A song heard as the dust settled and heros drifted west towards the sinking sun. Some were better than others, but few were as good as "Happy Trails." "Happy Trails" was written by Dale Evans in 1950, while preparing for a radio show. Dale decided Roy needed a theme song and since he penned all his autographs with "Trails of Happiness" or "Happy Trails, Roy Rogers", the title came easily. Scribbling on an envelope, Dale wrote the famous lyrics and taught the medley to Roy and the Sons of the Pioneers forty minutes before show time. What came across the radio that night gave America's favorite singing cowboy a theme song and a nation a lifetime of inspiration.

Roy and Dale married in 1947, and together appeared in 35 movies, like "My Pal Trigger," "Apache Rose", and "Don't Fence Me In." Dale wrote their theme song, "Happy Trails to You". They both starred in their own television show from 1951-1957, "The Roy Rogers Show". Dale also wrote "The Bible Tells Me So", which became a standard in gospel music. A gym, indoor pond, pool and grotto take this terrace into the 21st century.
ONE of a row of traditional Victorian terraces in a conservation area in Sydney's inner-east, there is little about its facade to suggest this home is any different from its neighbours. But it most certainly is.
Architect Dale Jones-Evans's client didn't want to live in a terrace even though he'd bought a terrace. His brief was simple: open it up so it doesn't feel like a terrace. The result is "The Water House".
The architect proposed gutting the house and his client readily agreed. Not only did Jones-Evans rub out the walls that define the traditionally poky rooms of a terrace, he created a vertical shaft, letting light into the centre of the house and giving it another spatial dimension.

PROFILE ON
ROY ROGERS AND DALE EVANS
ROY ROGERS

The things that made Roy Rogers a pop culture icon in the 1950's died long before he did. Our heroes are no longer cowboys. And no one makes a pitch for clean living anymore. And a yodeling straight-shooter dressed in frills and rhinestones (a trademark from his rodeo days) would be hopelessly out of place in these cynical times.
But for many baby boomers, Roy Rogers was their first real TV hero. His passing reminds us of how much we've aged and how much innocence we've lost.
On playgrounds today, kids threaten to "Springerize" their foes because they've seen one too many Jerry Springer show. Teachers have to ban language inspired by the animated "South Park." And good guys don't wear white hats anymore.
Although Rogers was a B-movie Western film star in the 1940's, his popularity soared when his films were recycled on TV in the early 1950's. The medium was in it's infancy in 1951 when his half-hour series, "The Roy Rogers Show," made him a TV star. The series ran seven years in NBC at 6:30 P.M. Sundays and reruns aired another three years on CBS on Saturday mornings.
Rogers already had been crowned "King of the Cowboys" before he came to TV. In 1948, an estimated 80 million went to see his films. His TV show was set on the Double R Bar Ranch where Roy continued his simple fight for law and order in the contemporary West. Also featured were: Dale Evans; Roy's bumbling sidekick, Pat Brady; Roy's horse, Trigger; Roy's dog, Bullet; Pat's cantankerous jeep, Nellybelle; and Dale's horse, Buttermilk.

Roy Rogers "King of the Cowboys" and Dale Evans "Queen of the West" At the peak of his career, from the early 1940s to the mid-1950s, he made as many as six pictures a year, which were seen annually by more than 80 million Americans - over half the population of the country. In 1950 there were more than two thousand Roy Rogers fan clubs around the globe; the one in London had fifty thousand members - the biggest such club then for anyone, anywhere on earth. In 1951 Roy Rogers moved to television and starred for six years on "The Roy Rogers Show" along with his wife, Dale Evans. They also created several long-running radio series that featured their singing duets and dramatic sketches, and they regularly rode in all the biggest parades and performed at all the grandest rodeos throughout the nation. Roy Rogers and Dale Evans were simply the most popular cowboy and cowgirl the world has ever known. Their West was a magical American landscape full of promise and hope in which goodness was always rewarded and bad guys always got what they deserved. They reigned at a time when the cowboy ideal seemed to signify everything decent about a nation in which all things were possible if you were a good guy with a
solid handshake and a sense of honor. They were, in the words of
