John. B. Finch, Party Chairman (1884-1887) John B. Finch, Chairman of the Prohibition National Committee 1884-1887, was born on 17 March 1852, the third son in a family of eight children. His parents were farmers near Lincklaen, New York. Finch early on was attracted to intellectual pursuits, especially to temperance. He began teaching school in 1870 (at age 16) and began lecturing on temperance in 1873. He married Retta L. Coy in 1871. Retta died of heart falure in 1874. In 1876, Finch married Frances E. Manchester, gave up teaching, and became a travelling organizer for the International Organization of Good Templars. Photo by Fritz Giehl, courtesy of Per-Hugo Kristensson Finch had become interested in the IOGT in 1872, joining a lodge in Smyrna, New York. He was made Deputy Grand Worthy Chief Templar for New York in 1876. In 1884, he was made Chief Templar of the (international) Right Worthy Grand Lodge and there earned a reputation as a peacemaker among conflicting factions within the IOGT. The second Mrs. Finch also did organizing for the IOGT. The Finches moved to Nebraska in 1877, lecturing and founding new lodges. Frances Finch became General Superintendent of Juvenile Lodges in Nebraska in 1879.

John Harlan named to Finch Endowed Professorship Dr. John M. Harlan, professor of medicine and head of the Division of Hematology, has become the Clement A. Finch Endowed Professor of Hematology. Harlan, who came to the UW in 1976 as a hematology fellow, is noted for his work on leukocyte adherence to the endothelium. This mechanism is essential to host defense and injury repair. However, in some circumstances, this same process harms tissues and blood vessels. Harlan is looking at whether anti-adhesion therapies would prevent such damage without compromising normal immune response. Harlan practices at Harborview Medical Center, where his clinical interests include general hematology, blood cancers, thrombosis and hypercoagulability. The Finch Professorship honors one of the medical school’s earliest faculty members. Finch was recruited to the UW in 1946 to become the first head of the hematology division at what was then a brand new medical school. He conducted pioneering work on iron metabolism and red cell physiology. He was also devoted to educating medical students and to the training and mentoring of research fellows. Two of Finch’s former fellows, Drs. Dan Coleman and Alec Stevens, with the help of Dr. John Adamson, also a former fellow, were instrumental in the fundraising effort for the Finch Professorship. More than 100 individuals contributed.
