In 1975, Franken began working for "Saturday Night Live" as part of the original writing staff. Franken soon began acting and starring in this late night sketch comedy show, creating many memorable characters. Franken is also well known for his work as a political satirist. He provided commentary for CNN at the 1988 Democratic National Convention in Atlanta. In 1992, he anchored Comedy Central's "Indecision '92", winning wide critical acclaim for his coverage of both conventions and election night. In 1996, he covered the party conventions and election night for "Politically Incorrect" where he continues to be a frequent guest. Franken's second book, "Rush Limbaugh is a Big Fat Idiot and Other Observations," reached the number one spot on the New York Times bestseller list and sold nearly a million copies. Franken's latest book, "Why Not Me? The Inside Story of the Making and Unmaking of the Franken Presidency," a fictional chronicle of his successful bid for the Presidency and his subsequent disastrous administration, also was a New York Times bestseller. Franken's television situation comedy, "Lateline," ran on NBC in 1998 and '99. Although People Magazine named it "the best new sitcom of the year" and TV Guide gave the show a perfect ten, it was cancelled by NBC because, according to Franken, "they're idiots."

Al Franken Franken hopes third time's the charm for 'Lateline' (The Boston Herald - March 15, 1999) by Bob Sassone Al Franken hopes that "three strikes and you're out" is wrong and "third time's the charm" is right. The comedian/writer and his critically acclaimed sitcom "Lateline" return to the NBC prime-time lineup tomorrow (8:30 p.m., WHDH, Ch. 7). For the third time. Franken has a theory about what happened to the first two attempts. "I think the network realized they made a mistake putting us on at 9 on Wednesdays like they did," Franken said. "It followed "Dateline,' and we're essentially a new comedy, even though we're about to do our third launch. And a new comedy following an hour news show usually doesn't work. And we were opposite "Drew Carey" and "60 Minutes II." "We were a new comedy about a news show, so you couldn't have devised a worse time to put us on," he said with a laugh. "Lateline" is a workplace comedy that shows what might be happening behind the scenes of shows such as "Nightline" in particular as well as NBC's "Dateline" (Franken jokes that he thought NBC would promote the fact that "Lateline" rhymes with "Dateline." No such luck.) Franken plays correspondent Al Freundlich, who is described as "not a threat, not good-looking, bad on camera, and America doesn't like him." While he sees himself as the heir to Edward R. Murrow, he's really closer to Ted Baxter.

Al Franken (Jump to Bill Maher) By Stephen Thompson Al Franken's career is sprinkled with success and failure in many different media: As a performer and writer on Saturday Night Live, he was there for both its '70s peak and its mid-'90s nadir. Lateline was canceled after two brief runs on NBC, with the network and audiences never getting behind Franken's work as buffoonish TV news reporter Al Freundlich. The Harold Ramis-directed 1995 film Stuart Saves His Family, based on Franken's SNL character Stuart Smalley, was a commercial bomb. As an author, however, Franken enjoyed remarkable success with the best-selling Rush Limbaugh Is A Big Fat Idiot And Other Observations and Why Not Me? The Inside Story Of The Making And Unmaking Of The Franken Presidency. The latter details the strategyand laments the horrific consequencesof his run for president, though he's ironically spent recent weeks stumping for Al Gore. A l Franken, late of "Saturday Night Live," joined the ranks of bestselling authors last week when his unexpectedly popular and predictably hilarious work of political satire, "Rush Limbaugh Is a Big Fat Idiot and Other Observations," hit number four on the New York Times Bestseller List. Franken's book lampoons the full range of conservative punditry and politics, taking the piss out of everyone from Pat Buchanan to George Will. But it is Limbaugh, media ringmaster of the Republican Revolution, who gets the biggest noogies. Franken, who spent the bulk of last summer at the unenviable task of listening to Limbaugh's show "three hours a day, five days a week," probes the facts behind the expansive radio personality's outrageous accusations, sometimes marshalling statistical research and sometimes relying on data of a more anecdotal nature. Responding to Limbaugh's roundhouse charge that feminists ("feminazis") believe that all heterosexual sex is rape, Franken offers the following: "I know a lot of women, almost all of whom consider themselves feminist, and I know only one who actually holds this belief. And we've been married nearly 20 years." Limbaugh himself has yet to acknowledge Franken's book, but the comedian has won grudging laughs from other conservative quarters. The most memorable reaction from the Right sprang from Franken's own fevered brain. In
