Robert Cabot is a former U.S. diplomat and a novelist, active in citizen diplomacy. Robert Fuller is former president of Oberlin College, founder of the Mo Tzu project in citizen diplomacy, and a frequent contributor to IN CONTEXT . They traveled to South Asia and the Himalayas in late 1986. - Robert Gilman
A BOWL OF WARM YAK'S MILK, dried apricots and bananas from Pakistan, a torn-off bit of unleavened bread offered by a traveller from China, sheltered from the cutting wind in a refugee Afghan's yurt - this is our traveller's stop at the 16,000 foot Khunjerab Pass. Glaciers edge down from hostile mountains, home of the snow leopard, the Marco Polo mountain sheep, the ibex, the yak. In a patch of dried grass and wintergreen, a vulture, the lammergeier, claws at a bit of carrion. Rise with him, wings ten feet tip to tip, soar in the violent updrafts of bitter air, be carried high. Look out with his defiant red eye, out over crumbling rock cliffs, treeless slopes of sliding scree, immense hanging glaciers, out over the top of the world. To the east is the gleaming pyramid tip of K2 against the ghosts of the Himalayas far beyond. To the west are the great black peaks of the Hindu Kush and the Pamirs. Endless mountains, stark, inhospitable - it is a remote and empty end of the world. And yet, looking down through a flurry of snow, a road can be seen, a bulldozer there struggling with a boulder. There's a plaque by the roadside further down honoring the more than four hundred Chinese and Pakistani road-workers killed here during construction. And look out further, reach with the mind's eye. To the south is the crowded fertile subcontinent; southwest, the warm allure of the Arabian Sea. To the west over Afghanistan are the riches of Persia and Arabia. To the northwest and north, over the Pamirs, are the Central Asian Republics of the Soviet empire. And in the entire eastern arc stretch the enormity, the wealth, of the Orient.

A Better Game Than War
Understanding the origin of our "fear of the other,"
may lead us to the elimination of war
An Interview with Robert Fuller, by David Hoffman
One of the articles in The Foundations Of Peace (IC#4)
Autumn 1983, Page 18
Robert Fuller, husband of Alia Johnson and former President of Oberlin College, is currently part of the Mo Tzu Project, a group that takes its name from a traveling peacemaker in fifth-century B.C. China. David Hoffman is editor of Evolutionary Blues (P. O. Box 40187, San Francisco, CA 94140, $6 per copy), a peace journal where this interview first appeared (volume two). The interview is reprinted with permission.
David: WHERE DO YOU SEE the arms race going? Robert: I was running around the track one sunny day, and I saw right behind me, connected to my own feet, my shadow. No matter how fast I ran, my shadow kept up with me, and it occurred to me that that was the metaphor for the arms race - a race with one's own shadow. No matter how fast you go, the other guy's going to keep up with you and stay connected with you; in fact, he's part of you. He is the projection of your body on the ground. No one will win the arms race, nor will anyone drop out. We can never outdistance the fear of those parts of ourselves that we have projected on others: Americans on Russians, Jews on Arabs, Protestants on Catholics, Whites on Blacks. Making the bomb the issue and disarmament the goal shields us only briefly from the realization that it is we ourselves - we human beings - that are the source of the danger.

"King of Cool"
by: Ed G. Lousararian Clark Gable grinning while blasting plunderers out of their saddles in The Tall Men , Kirk Douglas finishing off his antagonist with a swift kick to the rump in Man Without a Star , and John Wayne walking with confidence to face down four snarling hulks in Angel and the Badman , were all fashion statements for "cool". While numerous Western actors have exhibited their cool cowboy ways in assorted scenes such as these, Robert Fuller made his natural, built-in cool his trademark, beginning with his first starring television series, Laramie , in 1959. Sporting rustic gunfighter duds and equipped with a fast gun, deep voice, and vogue hairstyle, this slick, idyllic cowboy became one of Hollywood's finest and coolest action heroes. Fuller has played countless cowboy roles in Western films and television shows, yet today's youngsters deprived of these classics better recognize him as Emergency's A-1 physician who diagnoses and patches up patients everyday on syndicated television. After portraying so many charismatic, robust cowboys and riding all over the range and in and out of corrals, who'd imagine that this actor could also play such a sullen, solemn character as Doctor Kelly Brackett? Even more ironic, who'd expect the agile, athletic Korean War Veteran and former stuntman (who doubled for many stars including Steve McQueen in

Date: 10-24-97 Attorneys defending Sgt. Major McKinney the US Army's highest ranking enlisted man contend their client was charged only because he is not a full-fledged officer. This prompts PNS commentator Robert Fuller to note that, whatever the outcome of McKinney's trial, "rankism" is so pervasive in our society that "nobody" may become the "n" word of our time. Robert Fuller, past president of Oberlin College and currently Chairman of the Board of Internews, is working on a book about "somebodies" and "nobodies" and the rankism that divides them. I f Sergeant Major McKinney's lawyers are serious, the "N" word of the nineties is "Nobody." The linchpin of their defense against the charges of sexual misconduct facing their client in his upcoming court-martial is that McKinney is a victim of rankism, not racism. Although Sergeant Major McKinney was the Army's highest-ranking enlisted man, they contend that he is being singled out because his rank is not high enough. Had he been an officera member of "the general's club" the Army would have cut a deal and let him retire without prosecution.
