Half.com *Also starring: Heath Ledger , Joseph Gordon-Levitt, David Krumholtz , Andrew Keegan, Larry Miller Allison Janney Review by Dustin Putman 3 stars out of 4 As you can see, "10 Things I Hate About You" includes a huge number of characters, some of which I haven't even mentioned, such as Kat's Shakespeare-obsessed friend, Mandella (Susan May Pratt) and Bianca's materialistic comrade, Chastity (Gabrielle Union). At a short, but well-used running time of 98 minutes, all of the characters are perfectly handled, satisfyingly developed, and, for the most part, are not treated as caricatures (another flaw of "She's All That," where the bad guys (and gals) ran around constantly saying, "you're vapor"). Since I could sympathize with the realistic depictions of the central characters, and since many of the comedic and dramatic scenes were surprisingly effective, I got completely caught up in all of the relationships and was thoroughly entertained.

Essentially a modern version of The Taming Of The Shrew set in a Seattle high school, 10 Things I Hate About You uses the broad threads of the play to explore more relevant themes and issues. The shy Cameron (Joseph Gordon-Levitt, from popular tv sitcom Third Rock From The Sun, etc) wants to date the beautiful and popular Bianca Stafford (Larisa Oleynik). The stumbling block is her older, shrewish sister Katrina (Julia Stiles), who loves death metal, the morbid poetry of Sylvia Plath, and whose sharp tongue drives away any boy who shows even the slightest interest in her. The girls' single father (Larry Miller) constantly worries about his two daughters, and forbids Bianca to go on a date unless Katrina also has a date. Cameron is faced with the impossible mission of trying to coerce someone to go out on a date with Katrina.

Leider ist ihre Mutter gestorben und ihr Vater ist sehr darauf bedacht, daß sie sich nicht mit Jungs trifft, denn diese wollen doch immer nur das eine. Aus diesem Grunde hat er sich eine ganz tolle Strategie ausgedacht. Bianca´s Schwester Kat ist zwar auch eine Hübsche, doch sie ist Jungs eher negativ eingestellt und so sagt ihr Vater immer, daß Bianca erst dann sich mit Jungs verabreden darf und erst dann auf Partys gehen darf, wenn Kat es auch tut. Aus diesem Grunde überzeugt Cameron den coolen Aufreißer Pat mit Geld, daß er ein Date mit Kat ausmachen soll. Das klappt auch, doch Pat erkennt irgendwann, daß Kat eine Nette ist und verliebt sich in sie. The teen comedy genre has been a wildly successful one these past few years, as we've seen all kinds of rip-offs, abominations and even a few straining originals. It's even spawned a few updates of Shakespeare and Dickens, the weirdest of which was Leonardo DiCaprio's love-it-or-hate-it 1996 radical version of William Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet . Yes, we've gotten some weird, weird films, some hopelessly raunchy, others openly profound. 10 Things I Hate About You is somewhere in between. Very loosely based on (maybe even just inspired by) William Shakespeare's comedy The Taming of the Shrew , one thing that 10 Things has going for it is a teriffic ensemble cast of teens. Larisa Oleynik (of Nickelodeon fame) is Bianca Stratford, a gorgeous and insanely popular sophomore that has one monkey on her back: her dad will not let her date... until her sister, Kat Stratford does. The problem is that Kat is rather anti-social, to put it mildly, and getting her to date is almost as inconceivable to her as getting her dad to loosen up (fairly inconceivable, in case you do not get my drift). That also presents a problem for newcomer Cameron (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) who has a major crush on Bianca. Fortunately for him he has a quick-thinking pal who gets Joey, the school hunk with a crush for Bianca, to pay another guy to date Kat. The conflict, then is who will get the girl, Joey (the jerk) or Cameron (the nice guy).

10 Things I Hate About You Movie Review by Sidra Roberts William Shakespeare’s Taming of the Shrew has been the subject to several well written remakes i.e. Kiss Me Kate and now 10 Things I Hate About You is joining the ranks. First glance at the cast and your instincts say teeny-bopper movie—eeeew!! With the likes of Andrew Keegan, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Larisa Oleynik, who are all big in the teeny-bopper circle and Heath Ledger, who is obviously going to steal the adoration of several female teens and pre-teens, one initially might draw the conclusion there is no real acting in this. Honestly that is not the case, the acting is quite good. Not to mention the writer is an absolute genious. Kat Stratford (Julia Stiles) is a "mutant breed of loser." She’s strong, idealistic, bright, independent and utterly out of place in Padua High a.k.a. Narcissism High. Her sister Bianca (Larisa Oleynik) is Little Miss Popularity. All the guys want her, what does she have? That oh-so-sheik shallowness out the rear end thing going. They’re father (Larry Miller) comes up with an brilliant plan. Bianca can’t date until Kat does. " But she’s a mutant. What if she never dates?" "Then you’ll never date. Oh I like this idea." New kid in school Cameron (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) upon first sight falls madly in lust in Bianca. He then devises a way to get to meet her. Bianca needs a French tutor. "Does you speak french?"(Cameron’s friend, Micheal) "No, but I will"(Cameron). So, he starts tutoring Bianca and he discovers the deal with her father. So, he then starts looking for a date for the anti-social Kat. He decides upon Patrick Verona( Heath Ledger), a guy most of the school doesn’t know anything about just that he’s big and dangerous.
