Schuyler Colfax had already died by the time Indiana artist Frances Goodwin was requested by the Senate Committee on the Library to present a preliminary clay model of the late vice president. On the recommendation of the former vice president's widow, the committee approved Goodwin's proposal. Born in Newcastle, Indiana, Goodwin studied with Daniel Chester French at New York's Art Students' League and at the Chicago Art Institute. Her bust of Robert Dale Owen is in the Indiana statehouse. Mrs. Colfax was a regular visitor at the sculptor's Chicago studio while the work was underway, making suggestions that, as she put it, "might aid in modeling a faithful likeness." The Piccirilli Brothers of New York translated Goodwin's clay model into marble, and it was installed in the Senate chamber gallery in 1897.

BRIDGEWATER, FRANKFORT, ONEIDA CASTLE, SCHUYLER LAKE, AND SHERBURNE FIRE DEPARTMENTS AWARDED $285,953 IN FIREFIGHTER GRANTS WASHINGTON, D.C. - Rep. Sherwood Boehlert (R-New Hartford) today announced that the Bridgewater, Frankfort, Oneida Castle, Schuyler Lake, and Sherburne fire departments have been awarded a combined $285,953 in federal funds through the Federal Emergency Management Agency's (FEMA) Assistance to Firefighters Program, bringing this year's grant award total in the 23rd District to $797,505. The funds will be used to purchase life-saving firefighter equipment, enhance other firefighter safety and health initiatives, and increase the effectiveness of fire department operations. The Bridgewater Fire Co., Inc. (Oneida County) was awarded $49,950; the Frankfort Volunteer Fire Department (Herkimer County) was awarded $94,307; the Oneida Castle Volunteer Fire Department (Madison County) was awarded $29,700; the Schuyler Lake Fore Department (Otsego County) was awarded $45,414; and the Sherburne Fire Department (Chenango County) was awarded $66,582. "Without federal assistance, it's unlikely our fire departments would be able to purchase additional life-saving firefighting equipment and enhance firefighter health and safety programs," said Boehlert, who cosponsored the legislation that created the program as co-chairman of the Congressional Fire Services Caucus. "I commend our fire departments who prepared winning applications for these beneficial grants. I will continue to do everything I can at the federal level to support our firefighters."

Schuyler Colfax (1823-1885), served as vice president of the United States from 1869 to 1873 during the first term of President Ulysses S. Grant. Colfax was an active leader of the Whig and Republican parties.
Colfax was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1855 and was Speaker of the House from 1863 to 1869. He was an early supporter of voting rights for blacks. But his association in 1872 with the Liberal Republican Party, which opposed Grant, kept him out of the vice presidency during Grant's second term. Colfax was born in New York City.
