Press Release
For Immediate Release - June 13, 2002
Contact: Jerry Dowell - (573) 751-6858 State Senator John Cauthorn Announces
Block Grant Award For Northeast Missouri County
Jefferson City, MO Sen. John Cauthorn, R-Mexico, today announced that Schuyler County has been awarded a grant of $278,400. The grant monies will be used to help improve and expand the Schuyler County Public Water Supply District 1 system. "With population and development growth comes a demand for expanded core services," Cauthorn said. "Schuyler District One has worked to stay ahead of the water system growth curve, and this current project will help maintain the district's supply-and-demand edge." Schuyler County's award is a Community Development Block Grant (CDBG). The CDBG program is administered by Missouri's Department of Economic Development (DED), which awards the grants to developing areas throughout the state. Grant amounts are determined by a number of factors, including the demonstration of a need for a particular project, the scope and suitability of the project and the project's estimated benefits. "Schuyler County officials devised and presented a project proposal that matched or exceeded all the requirements for the DED's development grant program," Cauthorn said. "Now, having received the grant commitment, Schuyler District One can get to work. Once completed, the water system project will improve the quality of life for county residents and business owners, and may help foster further area development, too."

Schuyler Colfax - 17th Vice President
    Party: Republican
    Term: March 4, 1869 - March 3, 1873
    Age at Inauguration: 45
    Life Span: March 23, 1823 - Jan 13, 1885 [61]
    President: Ulysses Grant
    • Colfax accepted the vice presidential nomination while serving as Speaker of the House
    • Shortly after taking office he announced he was not willing to serve two terms, probably in anticipation of Grant no wishing to seek reelection, therefore making him the front runner for president
    • When Grant announced he would run again Colfax tried to reopen his options by saying he would take the position if offered, but the president had instructed conventioneers to shop for a new candidate and they nominated Henry Wilson
    • Shortly after the convention it was learned that Colfax was involved in a scandal called Credit Mobilier, a scheme to defraud the government by overcharging for construction of the new transcontinental railroad
    • After it was alleged Colfax received stock and monetary payments, he was called before an investigative committee and testified that he knew nothing of the fraud

Schuyler Colfax Existed Or Did He? Yes, He Did The Schuyler Colfax Memorial stands as an eternal reminder of Colfax's existence. Ulysses S. Grant's vice-president, Schuyler Colfax, existed Attempts by historical quacksalvers to discredit the unquestionable existence of this satisfactory public servant seem absurd at best, and at worst, treacherously deceitful. Yet inexplicably, only one-third of those recently polled believed that Colfax was a real historical figure. The widespread effects of a clandestine movement to erase Schuyler Colfax from the national recollection are now apparent. Only a clear delineation of the facts can halt this historical coup d'état. A thorough investigation of Colfax's accomplishments in the newspaper business, legislature and vice-presidency will serve to counteract the forces of Anti-Colfax among our intelligentsia. Schuyler Colfax was born in New York City in 1823. Though no direct record of his birth has been discovered among governmental dossiers, later documentation indirectly affirms it by making reference to Colfax's age at a particular time. After moving to Indiana in 1836, Colfax rapidly accumulated wealth and acquired a South Bend newspaper in 1845. This purchase has served as quite the windfall for efforts to verify the actuality of Colfax's being, since his name appears on the masthead of countless copies of the paper that have been preserved in the Indiana State Archives. After his political leanings drew him into allegiance with the Whig party, Colfax was elected to the House of Representatives in 1854. Documentation of his fifteen-year tenure in the House is far from ambiguous. For instance, according to the tally-sheet from an 1859 voting agendum clearly states that one "Schuyler Colfax" voted "nay" on Proposition 295, which clarified three non-vital agricultural regulations.

THE GRANDDADDY OF HOTELS - THE NACHUSA HOUSE
Up until a few years ago, it was billed as the oldest continually operating hotel in Illinois and one of the five oldest in the country. It has stood through the years as a symbol of our past history and heritage, and as a reminder to all of the great people who walked through its doors. It has withstood the ravages of time and seen 34 United States Presidents take office, dating back to James Van Buren who was the 8th President.
It all began back in 1837, when John Dixon and a small group of early settlers returned from a downstate trip to the State Capital at Vandalia. They had called upon the legislature for a grant of a charter to establish the Dixon Hotel Company. In granting the charter, the state allowed the group a corporate seal and power to raise a capital stock of $20,000 for construction of a hotel in Dixon.
Money was quickly raised to begin the project and the foundation was laid in 1838 for the rooming house by a Buffalo, New York ,firm. But further progress on the structure was halted by the stringency of the money market attributed to the Panic of 1837 which adversely affected the economy of the nation as well as that of Illinois and hotel builders abandoned their project locally and work stopped in the same year it had begun. It would be some 15 years later when work would once again commence.
On March 19, 1853, with a capital amount of $10,000, the erection of the large hotel was begun and the completed building was to be ready in July of that year for use by the public. Further delays in construction caused the project to finally be completed, and the Nachusa House Hotel opened at last, on Dec. 10, 1853. It was named the Nachusa House after John Dixon's Indian name, meaning "Head hair white."
