A  Not  So  Brief  Biography
"Childhood is life under a dictatorship." Graham Greene was born on October 2, 1904 to Charles Henry
and Marion Raymond Greene, the fourth of six children.  Charles
was the Head Master of Berkhamsted School.  Graham's brothers
included Hugh, who went on to become a Director General of the
BBC, and Raymond, an accomplished mountaineer involved in the
1931 Kamet and 1933 Everest expeditions.  One of Marion's
distant cousins happened to be a person called R. L. Stevenson. Greene studied at the Berkhamstead School and Oxford ( in Balliol ) By all accounts, he had a pretty torrid time in Berkhamstead, having to balance all the time between his father and his schoolmates. He wrote quite regularly in Student Magazines, and was an editor of The Oxford Outlook .  His first work, a collection of apparently

B C D ... Z by birthday from the calendar Credits and feedback (Henry) Graham Greene (1904-1991) English novelist, short-story writer, playwright and journalist, whose novels treat moral issues in the context of political settings. Greene is one of the most widely read novelist of the 20th-century, a superb storyteller. Adventure and suspense are constant elements in his novels and many of his books have been made into successful films. Greene was a candidate for the Nobel Prize for Literature several times, but he never received the award. "The main characters in a novel must necessarily have some kinship to the author, they come out of his body as a child comes from the womb, then the umbilical cord is cut, and they grow into independence. The more the author knows of his own character the more he can distance himself from his invented characters and the more room they have to grow in." (Graham Greene in Ways of Escape Graham Greene was born in Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire, as the son of Charles Greene and Marion Raymond Greene, a first cousin of the author Robert Louis Stevenson.. Greene's father had a poor academic record but became the headmaster of Berkhamsted School, following Dr. Thomas Fry. Charles Greene had a brilliant intellect. Originally he had intended to become a barrister. However, he found that he had liking for teaching and he decided to stay at Berkhamsted. Often his history lessons were less lessons than comments on the crack-up of Liberalism. His brother Graham ended his career as Permanent Secretary at the Admiralty.

Greene, Graham (1904 - 1991) UK Writer VD The British writer and journalist traveled at length for his employer, the Foreign Office , for whom he covered diverse current affairs, particularly during the Second World War. As of 1967, he made several visits to Switzerland to see his daughter who had settled in Upper Montreux . He often had a drink with Peter Ustinov , who lived in Bursins. In the late 80's, Graham Greene decided to move permanently to Switzerland, a country he had come to love, and he settled in Corseaux . Like so many authors before him, he found the calm and inspiration he needed to write his novels. Graham Greene passed away in 1991, leaving his many readers orphaned. The writer now lies in the town cemetery of Corseaux, a charming village overlooking Lake Geneva More celebrities UK Writer VD All celebrities The information contained in this website is not meant to substitute qualified legal advice given by a specialist knowing your particular situation. Graham Greene
Biography from Baseline's Encyclopedia of Film
Occupation: Actor
Born: Six Nations Reserve, Ontario, Canada Native American actor who gained fame as Kicking Bird, friend and mentor to Kevin Costner, in DANCES WITH WOLVES (1990). A full-blooded Oneida, Greene was born on the Six Nations Reserve in Ontario, Canada. Prior to his DANCES WITH WOLVES success, he appeared with Al Pacino in the Revolutionary War misfire, REVOLUTION (1985); co-starred with Robby Benson in RUNNING BRAVE (1983); and played a Vietnam vet in the comedy adventure, POWWOW HIGHWAY (1989). After DANCES Greene began making frequent appearances on TV, generally playing quietly dignified characters on shows like "L.A. Law," "Northern Exposure" and "Murder, She Wrote." He also proved effective in less traditional fare such as "Where the Spirit Lives" (1990) for PBS' "American Playhouse" and the HBO film THE LAST OF HIS TRIBE (1992), in which he played the last survivor of the Yahi nation. He turned in a superb, laconic performance as a reservation cop who teaches rookie FBI man Val Kilmer a thing or two in Michael Apted's sober environmental thriller, THUNDERHEART (1992). Greene remains active in the Toronto theater community, where he has appeared in over a dozen productions.

Links Graham Greene (1904-1991) Henry Graham Greene was born on October 2, 1904 in Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire. The fourth of six children, Greene was a shy and sensitive youth. He disliked sports and was often truant from school in order to read adventure stories by authors such as Rider Haggard and R. M. Ballantyne. These novels had a deep influence on him and helped shape his writing style. The recurring themes of treachery and betrayal in Greene's writing stem from his troubled school years where he was often tormented for being the headmaster's son. After several suicide attempts, Greene left school one day and wrote to his parents that he did not wish to return. This culminated in his being sent to a therapist in London at age fifteen. His analyst, Kenneth Richmond, encouraged him to write and introduced him to his circle of literary friends which included the poet Walter de la Mare. In 1978 Greene gave Professor Norman Sherry a map that marked the spots he traveled to. Sherry spent 20 years retracing Greene's journeys, not without suffering. He contracted diseases from tropical diabetes in Liberia, gangrene of the intestine, to temporary blindness. He won the Edgar Allan Poe award for Best Critical/Biographical Study in 1990 for Volume I of
