e-mail: srhill@denr1.igis.uiuc.edu Plant taxonomy; floristics As a classically trained plant taxonomist and herbarium-builder my research interests continue along those lines. Whatever plants that can be observed in the field or preserved on a herbarium sheet are of interest to me. The Malvaceae (cotton family) is a moderate-sized flowering plant family which is very diverse in the American tropics. Some of the systematic and nomenclatural problems are still to be worked out since the species of the family like many others with mostly herbaceous members, seem to be rather quickly changing and adapting to human-caused environmental disturbance. Monographic work is on-going on several genera within the family, including Malva, Malvastrum, Gaya, and Sidalcea. It is most important to observe the plants as they develop since so many characteristically have a rather 'plastic' morphology. Treatments are to be submitted to the Flora of North America Project. Other current projects include a continuing survey of the flora of the island of Dominica, and field studies of threatened and endangered plants and natural plant communities in Illinois and the southeastern United States. One of my greatest interests is attempting to understand the causes and types of plant dispersal and migration, and how the facts can be used as an indicator of global climatic changes. While I am originally from Wethersfield, Connecticut, I have a rather unique botanical perspective having lived in Maine, New York City, Florida, Texas, Maryland, and most recently, South Carolina. Field work has been undertaken in Mexico, Belize, Costa Rica, the Bahamas, Puerto Rico, Dominica, Guyana, and Brazil, and through much of the southern United States from New Mexico east.

Steven M. Hill, Ph.D. (Molecular Endocrinology of Breast Cancer) Associate Professor
Ph.D., University of Arizona Breast cancer is the second healing cause of cancer related deaths in American Women. Currently it is estimated that 1 in 9 women will develop breast cancer at some point in her lifetime. Since the normal female breast is responsive to estrogen as well as other hormones, it follows that carcinoma of the breast is for the most part also estrogen and hormone responsive. The molecular aspect of these endocrine responsive tumors and factors regulating endocrine and particularly estrogen responsiveness are the focus on ongoing research in this laboratory. Neuroendocrine influences on mammary cancer. Melatonin is the principal hormone product of the pineal gland and has been shown to be an important regulator of the reproductive physiology of seasonally breeding animals. Numerous studies have also shown that this hormone also plays a role in the development and growth of human neoplasms, particularly endocrine responsive breast tumors, and may be a naturally occurring antiestrogen. Ongoing studies in this laboratory are characterizing the ability of melatonin to suppress the proliferative capacity and to inhibit the expression of ER in ER-positive human breast cancer cells. In addition, the effects of melatonin on estrogen-regulated growth factors is also being examined. These studies will employ a variety of techniques such as Western blot analysis, Northern blot analysis, RNase protection analysis, hormone-binding analysis, and nuclear "Run-On" analysis.

    Welcome
raditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is a comprehensive system of medicine based on thousands of years of knowledge and understanding of the human body and mind. It joins the power of acupuncture, chinese herbs, tui-na massage, and energetic excercises to right imbalances found in the body. This not only allows the body to heal itself but prevents further illness from starting.
This system has been fine tuned over several millenia and has been accepted around the globe as a safe, effective and holistic complement to conventional western medicine. Many new studies are coming out daily to show the effectiveness of these techniques, showing benefits in treating things as simple as relieving stress and quitting smoking, to more complicated problems as infertility and chronic pain. The treatment methods used in TCM are all safe and don't come with the side effects of allopathic (Western) medicine. This is because we treat the body in its entirety and not by the individual symptoms. Use the navigation bar above to learn about acupuncture, herbal medicine, locations, office hours, as well as the conditions we treat and extra services we provide.

This page contains the full text of the sixth edition (1997) of my 'One Tree Hill sketchbook'. It has not yet made it into print, but here it is electronically for those interested enough in an updated text. Follow the third link below to view some of the illustrations. The work is 12,500 words long and would best be read offline. (See Technical page if you don't know how to do that. The link to the Tech. page is at the bottom of this page.)
Foreword to this edition. This is the sixth edition of the One Tree Hill sketchbook and the first issue in the new A5 format which should be easier to handle, read and shelve. The inclusion of cross referencing, footnotes, appendix and an index should make it an even more valuable study tool for students of local history. Each edition of the book, since it's inception in 1977, has been updated and improved. This edition continues the tradition. All the illustration and information from the previous enlarged edition has been retained, in some cases re-written and complemented with the addition of new material.
