James Gang James Gang, Stagecoach Robberies,Quantrills Raiders, Cole Younger James Gang James Gang Originally formed around 1866, with its leaders being, Frank James Jesse James , and Cole Younger. From 1866 to 1881, the James Gang knew a fairly active life. James Gang members averaged around twelve men, formerly members of Quantrills Guerillas James Gang carried out stagecoach robberies with elaborate escape routes and knew the area, the lawmen and the communities. The Missouri southern sympathizers regularly sheltered from the long arm of the law the James Gang. At the age of 15 he joined the Confederate guerrilla band led by William Quantrill and participated in the civil warfare in Kansas and Missouri. In 1866, Jesse and his brother Frank became the leaders of a band of outlaws whose trail of robberies and murders led through most of the central states. At first they robbed only banks, but in 1873 they began to rob trains. City Manager's Office Jesse James Jesse James Home Of all the worlds' legendary characters, few have attracted world-wide fascination like the outlaw, Jesse James. Some call him America's Robin Hood, while others see him as a cold-blooded killer. Perhaps he was all of these things. Jesse Woodson James was born in Kearney, Missouri on September 5, 1847. His father, the Rev. Robert James, was a Baptist minister who helped found William Jewell College in Liberty, Mo. Some people say it was the cruel treatment from Union soldiers that turned Frank and Jesse to a life of crime during the Civil War. Certainly during the war years they learned to kill while riding with William Quantrill and Bloody Bill Anderson. After the war, Jesse was wounded while surrendering. Within a year, Frank and Jesse are believe to have pulled off the first daylight bankrobbery in peace time. They made off with $60,000 from the Liberty, Mo. bank not far from their home, and one man was killed. For the next 15 years, the James boys roamed throughout the U.S. robbing trains and banks of their gold, building a legend that was to live more than a century after Jesse's death.

Today, the typical person has derived much, if not all, knowledge about the life and times of Jesse James from the movies. Beginning with Jesse James Under the Black Flag in 1921 starring Jesse Edwards James (referred to as Jesse James Jr.), and concluding with the 1980 film ( The Long Riders ) with James Keach, movies have portrayed Jesse James on both sides of the coin. He has been a hero or criminal, murderer or saviour, crafty individual or homicidal maniac, and a money-hungry thief or a western Robin Hood. And because of this dual portrayal, the public is often times unable to distinguish between fact and fiction. This study will deal mainly with the depiction of Jesse James on film in order to illustrate why people confuse the real person with the legend. It also will explore how and why legends are made, and it will consider the evolution of western movies and the "cowboys" in these movies. Finally, it will examine the mirroring effect that the public has on movie production and which movie scripts have on its audience. In essence, movie production companies are mirrors receiving an image of what they believe audiences want to see in a movie. When the audience sees that movie they may perceive it as being more factual than it is, not realizing that they indirectly helped to construct that image.

Ford, and lived in Ray County, Mo. Often the Ford Brothers and other gang members would retreat to the safety of her home. Her reputation at times was in question. It is believed that she may have assisted in Dick Liddil's surrender. COLE, ZERELDA ELIZABETH (Mother of Frank and Jesse James) Zerelda was born January 29, 1825 in Woodford County, Kentucky to Sarah (Lindsay) and James Cole. James Cole was killed in a horse accident on February 27, 1827. In 1839, at the age of fourteen, Zerelda entered St. Catherine's Academy for Women in Lexington, Kentucky. Family records indicate that Robert James met Zerelda Cole at a revival meeting. They were married December 28, 1841. Zerelda was a large woman: 5 ft. 8 in. and over 200 1bs. She was strong, domineering, outspoken, and fiercely protective of her boys. She married and buried three husbands and buried four of eight children. She died February 10, 1911 and is buried in Kearney, Missouri. Zerelda's husband, Robert Sallee James, was born on July 17, 816 in Missouri to John M. James and Polly Poor. Robert became a Baptist minister and helped form William Jewell College. He died on August 18, 1850 at the age of 34 in California.
