HUTCHINSON ENCYCLOPEDIA James, Jesse Woodson US bank and train robber. He was a leader, with his brother Frank (18431915), of the Quantrill raiders, a Confederate guerrilla band in the Civil War. Jesse was killed by Bob Ford, an accomplice Frank remained unconvicted and became a farmer. In 1995 a US circuit court judge approved a scientist's proposal to exhume the body buried in James's grave and, using genetic testing, resolve whether or not the outlaw had faked his own death. The test determined that the remains really were those of James.

JESSE WOODSOM JAMES Jesse James, the son of a Baptist Minister, was born 1847 in Missouri. At the age of 15, during the Civil War, he joined a band of pro-Confederate guerrillas led by William C. Quantrill. This band of guerrillas raided farms and communities sympathetic to the Union. In 1862 Quantrill was commissioned a captain in the Confederate army; that same year he was declared an outlaw by Union authorities. On Aug. 21, 1863, Quantrill led his guerrillas on their most infamous exploit when they burned and pillaged the town of Lawrence, Kansas, killing more than 150 unarmed men, women, and children. In October, they killed about 100 Union soldiers at Baxter Springs, Kans. Two years later the guerrillas were looting in Kentucky when a small force of Union soldiers surprised them and fatally wounded Quantrill. After the war, Jesse James formed a gang with his brother, Frank, and several other men. They held up banks, stagecoaches, and trains until 1876, when the gang was decimated trying to rob a bank in Northfield, Minn. The two brothers escaped and formed a new gang. On Apr. 3, 1882, Jesse was shot and killed by Robert Ford, a fellow gang member, for the reward. Jesse was shot in St. Joseph, Missouri and was buried at his childhood farm home near Kearney, MO.

Jesse Woodson James
"Out of the frontier West the American character was formed..." Dee Brown Every century brings its heroes and its villains. Every now and then, however, a character lurches forth with a combination of the two; maybe because the world doesn't know whether to love or hate him or her, he or she becomes a milestone in the study of complex mankind. Nitty, gritty, but with the spirit of a conquering warrior. In short, a legend is born. Such a landmark is Jesse Woodson James. Of James, crime historian Jay Robert Nash asserts, "Millions of words would be written about this handsome, dashing and utterly ruthless bank and train robber. To many of his peers, he would appear a folklore hero who took vengeance in their name upon an industrial society that was grinding the old agrarian lifestyle to ashes. To others, he and his band represented the last vestiges of the Old South and its lost cause of secession...He was at large for sixteen years. He committed dozens of daring robberies and killed at least a half-dozen or more men. He died at the age of thirty-four." Jesse James at the height of his career, 1876 (Nash)

    Talking with Jesse James Garrett
by Erin Malone Discuss Congratulations on the new book. You must be excited to be finished and have the work out there for the community to learn from. JJG: I’m very gratified by the reception people have given the book so far. The initial feedback I’ve received has been overwhelmingly positive. Also, if nothing else, writing this book has really changed the way I experience bookstores. I have a whole different appreciation for the amount of work packed into even the slimmest volume on the shelves. JJG: What are you trying to communicate with the book that is different from the original diagram? JJG: Who is your primary audience for the book? Once they finish that book, what do they read to learn more? JJG: I’ve got two main audiences in mind for the book: newcomers to the field, those who may have web design or development skills who want to know how to bring a user-centered approach to their work; and decision-makers, the people who have to decipher what the heck these web people are talking about. Each of the main chapters has a list of additional books for those who want more detail on a particular topic. In addition, I’m putting together a resource page at jjg.net/elements/resources

Until 1978, the James farm was owned by the descendents of Frank
and Jesse James. By then, the elements had just about
claimed the farm. It was in ruins. Clay County purchased
the home from Jesse's grandchildren and the restoration work
was begun. By the next summer, visitors were once again going through the farm. Many visitors expressed an intersest in how they could help with the restoration of the farm. As a direct repsonse to these requests, an organization called "The Friends of the James Farm" was formed and it's board of directors would like to invite you to become a member. As a "Friend" your annual membership dues will help finance the continued restoration of the farm as well as help sponser historical research to help future generations know more about the lives and times of the James family. By becoming a member you will be part of the history of that very special place and you will be helping perserve it for future generations to enjoy.

    Jesse James: The Show-Me State's
Most Famous Train Robber The Legend of Jesse James is known the world over. He is probably the most famous and celebrated Missourian after Harry S. Truman. Little in the way of fact exists about James and what you are about to read is merely an attempt to tell his story. Jesse James was born on September 5, 1847 in Kearney, MO. During the Civil War, the teenager James joined a band of pro-Southern guerrillas under the notorious William Quantrill. As one of Quantrill's irregulars, James learned the art of being an outlaw. As one of Central's Raiders, James attacked Union supply trains and depots. Many individual atrocities were committed by this notorious band of guerrilla fighters in Missouri. Quantrill justified his actions by saying that they were fighting on the side of the Confederacy. The Confederacy benefited from the actions of Quantrill, but they never recognized him as a member of the Confederacy. In 1873, the James Gang tired of robbing banks and decided to try their hand at robbing trains. On July 21, 1873, the James Gang robbed the Chicago, Rock Island, and Pacific Railroad at Adair, Iowa. The gang had learned that $75,000 dollars in gold was to be transported on the train. According to the

Seven outlaws lay in wait on a curve six miles west of Adair, Iowa. Loosening a rail, they tied one end to a long rope. When the train came along that evening, the outlaws yanked the rope, which dislodged the rail. Seeing the danger ahead, engineer John Rafferty went into reverse, but the engine turned over on its side, crushing Rafferty and injuring the fireman and passengers. The outlaws promptly lined up the dazed passengers and robbed them of their valuables. To their surprise, the outlaws discovered that the gold shipment was not on the train. Their take was a measly $3,000. The real haul would speed by on the repaired tracks some twelve hours later: This time around, crime didn't pay. The conductor was the captain of the train. A jack-of-all-trades, on a single run he might attend to a sick passenger or an injured crew member, eject a card shark or deliver a baby. One conductor admitted using the same pocket knife to cut the umbilical chord of a newborn baby that he had just used to carve a plug of chewing tobacco.
