    Summary:
James Earl Jones is an extraordinary man, best known for his many plays, voices for movie characters, and Bell Atlantic. It is kind of ironic that nearly his entire career is based on his voice because up until he was fifteen he had a stuttering problem. James fought off his stuttering problem and began acting. The play Othello (which he acted out several times) launched his acting career. He went on to star in 'The Great White Hope'. Afterward, he was as the voice of Darth Vader (the evil villian) in 'Star Wars' (1977), the sequel 'the Empire Strikes Back' (1980), and the trilogy 'Return of the Jedi' (1983). From 1982-1990 he appeared in 'Conan the Barbarian' (1982), ' Gardens of Stone' (1987), 'Field of Dreams' (1989), and 'The Hunt for Red October' (1990). James also was the voice for Mufasa in 'The Lion King'. It is amazing what James Earl Jones has done so far in his lifetime. To say the least, he is a talented man.

to Students in Support of Bell Atlantic's Literacy Efforts
James Earl Jones, the legendary actor and Bell Atlantic spokesperson, delighted children at the GW Carver and Bruce Street Schools when he visited to read to students from the classic children's book, Where the Wild Things Are, by Maurice Sendak. Bell Atlantic invited Jones to visit with the students as part of its ongoing effort to encourage literacy and a love of reading among young people. "We are extremely thankful to Bell Atlantic for its ongoing relationship with the Newark Public Schools," said Dr. Beverly Hall, former Newark Public Schools District superintendent. "Today's event is just another example of how corporate partnerships with our educational system work to benefit our children. We welcome Mr. Jones here to our schools and we appreciate his efforts to spark an even greater interest in reading for our students." The Bruce Street School schools was selected to participate in the reading, in part, to inspire those students who may have trouble reading and are self-conscious because of their speech impediments. "Bell Atlantic is thrilled to bring James Earl Jones to the Bruce Street School, housed within the GW Carver School," said William M. Freeman, president of Bell Atlantic-New Jersey. "We have a history of working with this particular school to help children with hearing disabilities reach their full potential. Of course, it's also always a pleasure to see Mr. Jones interacting with students, and we hope today will help encourage within them a love of reading."

His great range as an actor, in tackling roles from Shakespeare to Star Wars , is what has made James Earl Jones one of a few legendary American film actors. His role in Cry, the Beloved Country as a minister whose son is condemned to death as a murderer is one Jones had been waiting years to play. Already touted as a possible Oscar contender for the part, Jones said the role was one of his most challenging and rewarding ever. During a trip to New York for the film's premiere last fall, Jones sat down with NUVO and several other publications to discuss his love for the role - and of the film's gentle yet poignant message. NUVO: You had committed to Cry, the Beloved Country years before it was shot. At what point did you decide to take the role? Was it when you saw the script? JONES: Way before that. I had read the book years ago and had always wanted to be in it. My big question was: How would the gentleness - which I think is the key to my character - how would it go over with young black people? My main concern was that it not appear as something from the past, as a museum piece. I said, "When Mandela is freed, we'll see." My character mirrors Mandela's gentleness. When he was freed, I knew I would make this picture. Later, the script came along and I loved it. NUVO: How do you see the film in terms of race relations in America today? How do you think it will play with young people today in the wake of the Million Man March and the O.J. trial?

    Biography.
    http://www.npr.org/programs/anthem/bios/jejones.bio.html
James Earl Jones The Big Audition As a boy, James Earl Jones had such a severe stutter that, for eight years, he refused to talk and was functionally mute. A high school teacher who discovered Jones had a gift for writing poetry, and who thought forced public speaking would help him out of his silence, insisted that he recite a poem to the class each day. Jones claims that he still stutters sometimes (it doesn’t bother him anymore) but was mostly cured by being forced to speak to an audience. Today, as the voice of CNN and Bell Atlantic, and after a long career as a theatre, film and television actor, Jones’s steady, authoritative voice is among the most recognizable in the country. We asked James Earl Jones to perform a monologue from his early theatre auditions as part of our Anthem series Audition Monologues . He explained that he doesn’t remember most early auditions; they so traumatized him that he’s blocked them from memory. But he did remember a significant "audition" he performed for his father (also a serious actor). Fresh out of the army in the mid-1950s, young James Earl Jones found his father and performed a monologue of the impulsive young soldier character Hotspur from Shakespeare’s Henry IV, Part I
