Kennedy, John Fitzgerald Kennedy, John Fitzgerald (1917-1963), 35th president of the United States (1961-1963), was admitted to Princeton in 1935, as a member of the Class of 1939. He fell ill with jaundice in London that summer and did not matriculate until October 26, 1935, a month after college opened, and withdrew on December 12, 1935, because of a recurrence of jaundice. He later entered Harvard from which he graduated cum laude in 1940. While at Princeton he roomed in 9 South Reunion with Kirk LeMoyne Billings '39 and Ralph Horton, Jr. '39. Reunion Hall, condemned as a fire hazard, was torn down in 1965. Bricks from the fireplace in their living room, rescued by his classmates, frame a bronze plaque about him in the south entry of the Class of 1939 Dormitory. His maternal grandfather, John F. Fitzgerald was the mayor of Boston, popularly known as “Honey Fitz”. The Kennedy’s lived in a modest but comfortable frame house, but as the family grew, so did their father’s fortune. Joseph Kennedy had become quite wealthy by the time he was 30 making his fortune in stock-market speculation, motion pictures, shipbuilding and real estate. He also would hold several appointive positions in the federal government during the Roosevelt administration, and his driving ambition was to put a son in he White House. Kennedy’s father had groomed his first son, Joseph, for politics – Joe was going to get the Kennedy’s into the White House. But young Joe was killed in action in 1944, and after working as a reporter for the Hearst International News Service, Kennedy decided to enter politics himself. His opportunity came early in 1946, when he announced his candidacy for the Democratic nomination for the House of Representatives seat for the 11th Congressional District of Massachusetts. He ran against nine other candidates and won the primary with 42 percent of the votes. In November, he defeated his Republican opponent and became a congressman at the age of 29, winning reelection in 1948 and 1950. In 1952, Kennedy decided to run against Republican Senator Henry Cabot Lodge, Jr., defeating him by more than 70,000 votes, in a campaign the entire Kennedy family took part in.

John Fitzgerald Kennedy was born in Brookline, Mass., on May 29, 1917. His father, Joseph P. Kennedy, was Ambassador to Great Britain from 1937 to 1940. Kennedy graduated from Harvard in 1940, and he entered the Navy in 1941. In 1943, when he was a captain of a PT boat, it was rammed and sunk by a Japanese destroyer and presumed lost. Kennedy, despite grave injuries to himself, led the survivors through perilous waters to safety and was eventually rescued. Back from the war after recovering from a war-aggravated spinal injury, Kennedy entered politics in 1946. He became a Democratic Congressman for the Boston area. In 1952, he ran against Senator Henry Cabot Lodge, Jr., of Massachusetts and won, advancing in 1953 to the Senate. He married Jacqueline Bouvier on September 12, 1953, with whom he had three children:
