News Daily today, here's my recap: Hulk joined Steve Kmetko and Jules Asner in the E! studio. They plug WrestleMania 18, Hogan is there in his Hollywood Hogan gear (black clothes, nWo shirt). Steve asks how wrestling has changed since the mid-80's, Hogan says the guys are a lot faster today and he says he's in the best shape of his life (they show a clip of him and Andre). Steve asks why the WWF is so big, Hogan says the WWF always brings hours of entertainment on TV and pay-per- view. Hogan talks about WrestleMania and he says he's going to beat The Rock. He says to the camera "Hey Rock, watcha gonna do when Hulk goes wild on you!?". They show a clip of Hogan and Rock setting up the WrestleMania match, Hogan says it's going to be electric. One of the stagehands says "The Rock says you're going down Hogan, yeah!" Hogan runs after him and that's the end of the interview. Hogan joined the show about 19 minutes in. It will rerun four times Thursday morning from 7:00am-9:00am EST.

That's not a good thing Friday, Mar. 23, 2001 fourth string But if not for E!'s special blend of fawning and cattiness, what would we watch? Because the other way in which the Oscars have become the Super Bowl for the rest of us is that the tantalizing walk-up is really the show itself, otherwise, you're stuck watching a four-hour, snail-paced foregone conclusion, the only suspenseful element of which is the contents of the chip-dip bowl on your coffee table. Since no one expects the awards themselves to generate much excitement, more depends on the host than ever before, particularly since this year Steve Martin was going to lift the schmaltz-coated fist of Billy Crystal. Martin, who's lately focused on his ar-teest side, writing humor for The New Yorker and plays for the stage, seemed to promise a brainier level of humor. Which, as David Letterman and, more recently, the Grammy's Jon Stewart can attest, you can usually count on to be cruelly rewarded at any L.A. awards show. Martin did not bomb, as, I must admit, I was hoping he would. Because that would have meant pulling off a surreal, star-befuddling, one-time-only performance. Instead, he gave a safe, caretaker performance that was hardly a performance at all. True, his funniest jokes were laced with a measure of contempt for the industry (on the awards' use of the phrase, "The Oscar goes to..." rather than "The winner is...": "God forbid anybody should think of this as a competition. It might make the trade ads seem crass"). But Martin is thoroughly L.A. at heart, and he kept the crowd safely on his side with liberal name-dropping and use of the pronoun "we." He probably didn't guarantee himself an invite back with his competent, often funny job; but worse for him, he didn't guarantee that he'd never be asked back, either.

But 'Quills' is already being lauded as a serious Oscar contender. The world premiere Friday at the London Film Festival introduced the high caliber cast, including Michael Caine, Joaquin Phoenix, Geoffrey Rush, and Kate Winslet. Kate joined us earlier in London to chat about de Sade and motherhood. Steve [Sitting in a London hotel suite with Kate] You've been to a number of film festivals. Does it mean more to you ?
