Forgiving Charles Kuralt By Ralph Grizzle On the Road with Charles Kuralt. The legendary reporter in his youth. By Ralph Grizzle I will remember Independence Day 1997, not for its glorious displays of fireworks or for its patriotic celebrations in city squares, but as the day that Charles Kuralt died. His death affected me so profoundly that he occupied my mind even as my family and I sat watching fireworks burst streaks of color over Asheville, North Carolina. In fact, from that day on, I have devoted much of my own life to researching and writing about his. In subsequent months, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill commissioned me to conduct a series of oral histories with Kuralt's friends, family and colleagues. Sixty of my interviews now accompany the vast Charles Kuralt Collection, a historical archive of nearly 60,000 letters, scripts, memos and other memorabilia that Kuralt gave to the university for safekeeping. As I talked with people whose lives had intersected with Kuralt's, I heard time and again that Charles was just what you saw on television - genuine, sincere, sweet, caring, "a national hero," the "poet of America's back roads." Reactions to Kuralt's marital infidelity ranged from censure to sympathy. Faced with two disparate images of Kuralt - one whose friends characterized him as a national hero; the other of a man who cheated on his wife for nearly three decades - I found it difficult to reconcile how I should remember him. His moral frailty contrasted sharply with the seemingly strong convictions of the television personality who espoused goodness and character and virtue.

The Impeachment of Charles Kuralt
thoughts by Anitra L. Freeman

All the fuss and fandango over the reports that Charles Kuralt was keeping the household expenses for another woman besides the one he was married to reminds me of the wingding awhile back over the impeachment trial of Bill Clinton. A lot of the same people are lining up on the same sides for much of the same reasons.
Side One: What Charles Kuralt did was the business of Charles Kuralt and the people he was directly involved with when he did it. The rest of us are seeing through the media, darkly, and at long distance; we can't know for certain even that the woman whose house he was paying for was his mistress, let alone how that affected his wife, his co-workers, or the milkman. He contributed enjoyably and sometimes magnificently to our culture and heritage, and even if he was keeping and sleeping with a mistress for 30-odd years it has no bearing on his achievements.
Side Two: We are all responsible for enforcing the moral code of our society. We know how adultery has affected us and those we love; we can extrapolate from that to how it would affect other human beings. If a person's moral judgment is wrong in one area, it casts doubt on their judgment in all areas. A person's life is judged by its whole; one rotten piece spoils the flavor of the whole pie. The moral failures of major public figures are a greater blow to the moral fabric of the nation than the moral failures of non-major non-public figures, and therefore justly incur heavier criticism.

By Bob Anez June 8, 1999 Charles Kuralt, CBS's folksy "On the Road" correspondent, spent years exploring America's out-of-the-way places in search of oddball stories. But the best story may have been the one he never told. For 29 years, until his death in 1997, he apparently kept a mistress and maintained a second family. The celebrated journalist was, in effect, husband and father to them, as well as breadwinner, friend and hero. While his wife remained at their home in the concrete canyons of New York City, he nurtured his secret life along a rushing trout stream in Montana.

TV Poet: Charles Kuralt
CHARLES KURALT COMES HOME (1934 - 1997) `ON THE ROAD AND BEYOND: OBSERVATIONS ABOUT THE USA AND HOW IT HAS CHANGED FOR THE BETTER
To read the papers and to listen to the news, . . . one would think the country is in terrible trouble. You do not get that impression when you travel the back roads and the small towns . . do care about their country and wish it well.
Charles Kuralt
Goodbye Friend Kuralt
by Me
I have never cared for Sunday mornings. Not being religious it seemed to be an ambiguous stopgap of a day. It was nothing more than a painful reminder that Monday was looming it's ugly head. Another week beginning anew. There was one thing that I looked forward to on Sundays; Sunday Morning with Charles Kuralt. That came to a temporary end on Easter Day 1994. It came to a permanent end on Independence Day 1997. Mr. Kuralt died on that day.
I am rarely touched by those emotional things that we encounter throughout the course of a day; Mr. Kuralt's broadcasts touched me. He spoke of hope and triumph over adversity; he spoke of growth against obstacles; he spoke of the uncommon common person. He took me to places and I had never been and back to places I long to see again. On many occasion while the body was fine Mr. Kuralt saved my soul without ever knowing it. He renewed my faith in this country; a faith that wanes all too often with the current state of affairs.
Goodbye Mr. Kuralt. This place shall surely be less without you. You are now returned to that which you loved so much; the fair soil of North Carolina.

Charles Kuralt goes High Tech
a GPS enabled bus travels the country
[vote for against This idea takes Charles Kuralt's "On the Road" series and upgrades it, so it is more high tech with a roving GPS enabled bus that does human interest stories. A fuller treatment with pictures can be found at: nreilly , Oct 15 2000 the bus http://www.geocitie...elsonreilly/sl.html nreilly link In your webpages, you refer back to the success of reality television shows. I think the reason reality television occasionally works is that editing and player selection leaves us with characters in whose fates we become interested. We tune in to see what becomes of a person, how their relationships develop, and so on. Your concept is one where participants change each week; the episodes are tied together by hardware, not by people. I'm not sure a bus will capture the interest of viewers in the same way that a group of people would.

Charles Kuralt's stories from the American road have long served as antidotes to hurried lives. At the time of his death in 1997, Kuralt was completing the first year of television vignettes, called "An American Moment." Now Kuralt's friend and long-time collaborator, Peter Freundlich, has collected these brief essays in Charles Kuralt's American Moments , a welcome yet farewell journey into the last of Kuralt's esteemed work. These short vignettes, each only one or two pages and illustrated with black-and-white photographs, read as if Kuralt himself is speaking them. Kuralt writes of American emblems, inventions, dreamers, sights, heirlooms, customs, shrines, and ideas that collectively define the American spirit. Readers meet sled-dog mushers, scientists who study the sun, the man who crafts the president's shoes, and a Victrola repairman. Kuralt examines petroglyphs, Paul Bunyan's Minnesota hometown, and skips stones across the water with a young boy. What makes these short pieces work so well is Kuralt's uncanny ability to infuse the present with a sense of the past in so few wordsand so seamlessly. In these pages is the stuff of Americaits backroads, everyday people, and Kuralt's affection for the old and the often unparalleled craftsmanship of yesteryear. In the final piece, "The Road Less Traveled," Kuralt writes, "An unpaved road keeps you from driving too fast, or

Address by Charles Kuralt at Scenic America's National Conference
May 12, 1997
Baltimore, Maryland Television chronicler and North Carolina native Charles Kuralt died on Independence Day 1997. Less than two months earlier he had given the keynote address at Scenic America's national conference in Baltimore. Those who attended will remember Kuralt's easy-going style and the way he opened the floor for questions encouraging the audience to "shoot the breeze" with him. Mr. Kuralt was a member of Scenic America's Advisory Board. Charles Kuralt's address of May 12, 1997 is reprinted below. I'm really honored to be with you. This all started years ago when William Least Heat-Moon, who has written the best book about the back roads of America [ Blue Highways ], told me how much fun he had addressing this organization. He must not be here tonight or we would have spent all afternoon together. But then Sally Oldham and Meg McGuire [of Scenic America] really got serious about their invitations to me, and I'm really glad to be here at last. I do feel a little diffident about talking to a room full of people who manifestly know more than I do about the subject. I know a thing or two about America. I know, for example, how the country works. In the seventies, when I was trying to put two daughters through expensive eastern colleges, I took on some writing jobs on the side. The editor of

Thanks to the unflagging efforts of alumni volunteers Gene '53 and Saralyn '53 Oberdorfer of Atlanta and Jim Babb of Charlotte, the Charles Kuralt Learning Center and the Kuralt archives project are well on their way to being a reality. "Gene and Saralyn Oberdorfer and Jim Babb have done a wonderful job of promoting the cause among alumni," said Michele Fletcher, director of development for the Academic Affairs Library. For Gene Oberdorfer, it was simply something that had to be done. "I was very enamored of Charles Kuralt and of the fine work he did for the University and for the image of UNC he projected throughout the world," said Gene Oberdorfer. "When he died, I felt his life should be memorialized on campus for students and visitors to continue to see and learn about what he did." The School of Journalism and Mass Communication is more than half-way to its fund-raising goal of $150,000 to create the Charles Kuralt Learning Center in Carroll Hall, scheduled to become the school's new home next year.

Charles and UNC-CH C harles Kuralt was one of the most beloved TV journalists in our country. There were bigger names: Walter Cronkite was called the most trusted man in America. Edward R. Murrow was a pioneer, a legend. But audiences loved Charles Kuralt. Kuralt had a soft spot for the School of Journalism and Mass Communication. He was a member of the Board of Visitors, and he was the host for group after group of students on the set of the "Sunday Morning" Show on CBS. In addition to the Learning Center, two important tributes to him are in place at UNC-CH: Voice of America and the Broadcasting Board of Governors created the Charles Kuralt Fellowship in International Broadcasting in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication. It gives a recent bachelor's or master's graduate a full-time paid job as a reporter or producer for a year at Voice of America in Washington, D.C. VOA is the largest international broadcasting service of the U.S. government. Each week it airs more than 700 hours of radio and TV programming in 52 languages around the world. The Charles Kuralt Collection in the Louis Round Wilson Library consists of nearly 250,000 of his papers, manuscripts and other works donated by Petie Kuralt, his widow. The collection opened on Feb. 25, 1999. The collection includes documents and oral histories about Kuralt and his work and a Charles Kuralt exhibit in the lobby of the Southern Historical Collection on the fourth floor of Wilson Library.
