Charles Kuralt’s America by Charles Kuralt
For years my Sunday morning treat was to sit back, coffee in hand, and explore news and America with Charles Kuralt on CBS Sunday Morning. Kuralt’s lovely melodic voice, the sheer pleasure he took in discovering little things about America, and sharing them with those of us who could only experience them through our television sets, was an enriching experience. This little book contains reports on 12 of Kuralt’s favorite spots. I read it slowly, so that I could once again hear that rich voice enthrall me with tales of good cookin’ in New Orleans and ancient pictographs outside of Ely. For those of us who spend too much time quickly moving from City A to City B, this book is a delightful reminder of the many unique nooks and crannies in America, and the value in taking time to find and enjoy those spots. From the April 1994 MediaWatch Review
A World Destroyed by Capitalism in Need of Higher Taxes, More Government Charles Kuralt: On the Road to Serfdom After 37 years with CBS News, Charles Kuralt signed off from Sunday Morning for the last time on April 3. The avuncular Kuralt will popularly be remembered for his "On the Road" pieces and the artsy, unhurried morning show he created 15 years ago. But all this masks his other side, one which peeked out from under his folksy demeanor throughout his career: a committed liberal. For his retirement, MediaWatch collected the political wisdom of Charles Kuralt. Environment. During the early '90s environmental craze, Kuralt, who ended Sunday Morning every week with a nature video, was in the vanguard. He espoused the view that technological advancements only bring environmental destruction. On Sunday Morning's May 31, 1992 broadcast, Kuralt introduced a report by saying, "Our motor cars free us and foul the air. Our factories supply us with everything we need and poison the water. Every time humanity makes a great leap forward, we land deep in toxic mud." Tax More/Spend More . Kuralt repeatedly stressed that if only people had the will to pay increased taxes, government could spend more on our country's problems and quickly solve them. Introducing a January 12, 1992

He took the thread of everyman's life and wove a tapestry of America and then gave it as a gift to us. I loved re-discovering America with Charles Kuralt! After reading this book, I felt a sense of renewal and satisfaction that there are still candles lending their beams to the world. I picked up this book for a report at school. I thought that it would be just another boring book that we are often forced to read in school. Wrong-O! I loved it! From the team that had lost every single one of its games to the train depot that served soldiers during WWII, I found myself emersed in each of the stories. Each of these average Americans had a not so average story to tell...

IF YOU GO Lodging Options:
Most larger towns along both spring and winter loops have several motels from which to choose. In the Mattamuskeet area, roughly halfway along the suggested loops, options are more limited. Lodging is generally confined to the small towns of Fairfield, Swan Quarter or Engelhard. Engelhard is probably the best choice because it has the area's only supermarket, and a good restaurant, Martelle's, not far from the newly renovated Hotel Engelhard located on Highway 264 (PO Box 99, Engelhard 27824, 800-290-5311 or (252) 925-2001). On the northern side of Lake Mattamuskeet, adequate lodging can be found in Fairfield at the Hyde-Away Motel (6491 NC Highway 94, Fairfield, NC 27826, (252) 926-8101), with Harris' Seafood and Steak House next door (whose broiled seafood platter is consistently grand). Harris' Seafood and Steak House is located on Highway 94 and can be reached at (252) 926-1451. The unassuming Carawan's Motel is nearest the Mattamuskeet NWR, at the junction of highways 94 and 264 (Swan Quarter, NC 27885, (252) 926-5861). Remembering Charles Kuralt

by Ralph Grizzle, Edwin M. Yoder
The Globe Pequot Press, 2001 O n the front of this book there's a picture of television journalist Charles Kuralt and a photographer in a field of tall grass. Kuralt is standing, with his sunglasses perched on his nose, wearing a checked shirt slightly too small from his frame. The photographer is kneeling, and both are peering at the same thing somewhere off to the right. Kuralt is fully engaged, alert, with a small smile on his face. I think, after reading this memoir of friends, that it is obvious this is how Charles Kuralt liked to live his life: intense and focused on creating a picture with words that we in his TV audience could embrace. Many of the reminiscences in the book point out that Kuralt found himself a niche in the world of TVãa niche where some of his talents may have been wasted, but where he was comfortable until he decided to pull the plug. A brilliant writer and reporter, Kuralt was a worthy successor to Edward R. Morrow, but never had a worn-torn London to report on to show his reporting "chops."

Media Literacy Online Project - College of Education - University of Oregon - Eugene TV Poet: Charles Kuralt Bill Walsh, Contributing Writer
E-Mail: WillWalsh@aol.com Charles Kuralt has been "off the road" for a year and a half now, and I miss him. I know that it's perfectly common to say about anyone who retires that "there will never be another like him," but in the case of Charles Kuralt it's true no one will ever be able to fill his shoes or to do his job. Kuralt's "job" for 28 years was to drive the back roads of America in a CBS camper and report to us what he found there. What he found there was sometimes inspiring, sometimes charming, but always interesting and uniquely American. His series of "On the Road with Charles Kuralt" reports were like little pieces of ourselves. That alone made them special. But Kuralt would show us the America he found with such charm, such simplicity, and such sincerity that each story became almost like a little jewel (perhaps encrusted with the dust of a dirt road), but precious and priceless nonetheless. Kuralt was the Walt Whitman of American television, and he crafted a kind of video artistry that was about (and for) Everyman. In this he was (and he remains) unique.

Biography

As the book progresses, we learn about young Kuralt's first signs of independent thinking. As a kindergarten student at St. Agnes Academy in Washington, Charles was said to have asked the school's Sister Rosalind, "If thou shalt worship no graven images, then what are all those statues of the Virgin Mary and the saints doing around the school?" Although the other nuns found his question to be inappropriate, Sister Rosalind smiled and promoted Kuralt to the first grade.
It was at the age of six that Charles first dreamed of becoming a reporter. When he turned 13, in 1948, he was already working in radio. ABC-affiliate WAYS gave Kuralt his own radio show, "Junior Sports Parade." He would host the show every Tuesday afternoon. The position did not pay, but Charles was not in it for the money. He loved covering high school and junior high school sports and hoped to someday be a sportswriter for the Charlotte News
As I read further, I discovered that the road to success for Charles Kuralt was never ending. Each step along the way proved to be a stepping stone to something greater. At the young age of 16, Charles began his freshman year at the University of North Carolina. A few years later he ran for editor of the school newspaper
