Never too late to quit smoking
Dear Ann Landers:
You have printed several letters from people who have managed to stop smoking through various means. No one has mentioned my method. I hope you will print it. I have not had a cigarette in 11 years, and after the first five, my doctor said my lungs were as clean as if I had never smoked. Tell your readers to ask themselves this question: "If I should become unable to work or take care of myself, who would take care of me?" That ought to do it. Dear Judy: I hope the heavy smokers out there are asking themselves, "Could she be talking to me?" Thanks for saving some lives today.

Ann Landers

Dear Ann: This is a hard letter for me to write. My husband and I are in our 70s and have raised two children who are a disgrace. We waited until we were over 30 to marry because each of us was taking care of an elderly parent. We were thrilled to have children and tried to follow all the rules so we could set a good example. Our children were raised with love, religion, family values and discipline. We lived in a nice home in a fine neighborhood, and they attended excellent schools. Now, we are faced with an unusual problem and need your advice. My husband and I received an unexpected, sizable inheritance. Our children are not aware of this. We do not want them to have it when we die. We have no other relatives, and our friends are as old as we are. We are considering our church and perhaps the Salvation Army. We have made a list of people mentioned in our local newspaper who have done good deeds with no expectation of being rewarded and think perhaps we might give some money to them. We would like to feel we have really made a big difference in someone's life.

A letter to Ann Landers that appeared in the Bakersfield Californian on Friday November 29, 1996
Dear Ann Landers: You've gone to bat for people in may professions. I guarantee millions of my co-workers will thank you if you give us equal time. I deliver pizzas, and mu salary is only minimum wage, plus tips. If business is slow, I may work only a couple hours a day. Decent tips are vital. Last night, I delivered an order for $25.69, and the customer told me to "keep the change" after handing me $26. Of course, tipping is not mandatory, and there are some people who want every cent of their change back and don't tip at all. But most of us would rather be stiffed completely than get a 31 cent tip. We consider that a major insult. So, to our valued customers, if you tip your pizza deliverer, please give us at least a dollar. It's humiliating to smile and say, "Thank you," for a few pennies. Stiffed in Dallas Dear Stiffed: Here is your letter and I sincerely hope my readers will take seriously what you have written. What some folks don't understand is that delivery people are paid a very modest salary. It is expected that they will recieve tips and whatever they get belongs to them. Please, dear readers, if you can afford a $16 pizza, you can surely pay the deliver person $2.50 for bringing it to your door.

Ask Ann Landers: 4 April, 1997 Q I see nothing wrong with a good, hard spanking when a child is misbehaving. I am sick and tired of listening to whining brats in supermarkets and department stores while their parents plead with them to "behave yourself." When my kids acted like brats, I told them if you don't be quiet, I'll take you to the car and give you something to cry about!" They learned how to behave in public as well as at home. My father was a very loving man who worked hard to support my mother, my sister and me. If we didn't obey, he first let us know verbally. If that didn't work, he'd take off his belt and use it. Once we got a strapping, he never had to hit us for the same offense again. Child abuse is one thing, but I believe not teaching children right from wrong is neglectful. I often wonder how this young generation is going to turn out and what our country is going to be like when the spoiled brats are in control. - Future Shocked in Bellefontaine, Ohio

Spacefem for Ann Landers 2002!!!
As many of you already know, beloved advice columnist Ann Landers passed away on June 22. She had been helping people with their problems since before my mom was born and will be dearly missed. But let's face it, as tough and cool as she was, she never told her audience that men were inherent morons. She never licked a tootsie roll pop 1,300 times for science, advocated linux, or described the output impedance of an operational amplifier to her readers. It's true, loyal fans, as cool as Ann Landers was there is one who is cooler to take her place: Spacefem. Oh, that's me! Yes, I was sitting around doing a whole lot of nothing, mourning Ann like most of us, when an alert vistor known only as "ingber" asked if I would be up to the big job of taking Ann's place. And you know what? I think I am. So send me your questions! Ask me if toilet paper should go over the roll or under it! Complain to me about your neighbor mowing the lawn naked when your kids are playing outside or your in-laws staying at your house weeks at a time without leaving! I'm here and I'm ready. And just in case you wanted to tell all your friends about it, here's a cute linky button you can put on your webpage or journal or whatever to show your support and admiration. The world should not be without an Ann Landers, this is true, and I am ready to take her place in the hearts of millions.

Dear Readers: I'm on vacation this week, so I thought I'd run some of my favorite gems you've sent me over the years. Dear Ann: This is one of the funniest stories I've ever heard, passed on to my by my cousin: A housewife was in her basement doing her laundry when she realized the nightgown she was wearing also needed washing. She stripped it off and continued with her housework, but when she returned, still nude, to move the clothes to the dryer, she saw that a pipe overhead was dripping. Not wanting to ruin the fancy hairdo she had gotten for a dinner party that night, she picked up her son's football helmet and put it on as she transferred the clothes. When she turned around, she was startled to see a man from the electric company reading the meter. As he turned to head up the stairs, the man did not even glance at her but in a deadpan voice made a suggestion so lewd and vulgar that the woman was humiliated. Dear Ann: Dear Ann: Here's a story that gives you an idea of how things have changed in this country. An elderly man was crossing a downtown street when he entered an area marked off by yellow tape and sawhorses. Six men in city maintenance uniforms were leaning on their shovels chatting away, seemingly in no rush to fill a gaping pothole with black tar that was quickly cooling in the container at their feet, next to a sign that read "Caution, Men at Work." As the old gentleman passed between the men, one of them snapped at him, "Watch where you're going. Can't you read the sign?" The elderly man stopped and stood with hands on hips, looking slowly from the sign to the group of men. He then hurried on meekly, too embarrassed to admit that he did not know how to read.

Genealogy in Ann Landers’ Column
Ann Landers dispenses advice to the lovelorn and many others in her daily newspaper column. This week she published a "computer widow’s" suggestion to other women on how to cope with a husband who spends a lot of time with his computer, ignoring his wife. The advice? Take up genealogy! Hmmm, I think these couples should buy a second computer as well. You can find Ann Landers’ column on many online newspaper websites. I found it at: here.

DAVID STOEFFLER By SHIRLEY DAVIS / Quad-City Times Ann Landers always was doing things that surprised me. The world-famous advice columnist, who died Saturday in the Chicago apartment where I did my last story with her, was fairly new in the writing game when I first asked for an interview with her more than 40 years ago. I, too, was new, having been hired by former Quad-City Times Editor Forrest Kilmer on a whim. I thought I'd razzle-dazzle him with an interview with his favorite columnist and wrote Landers a note saying I could fill a page with pictures and a story if she'd just give me five minutes of her time at her Chicago office. "I work fast," I promised. She invited me to breakfast at her home.

Ann Landers' Biography Advice columnist
Born Esther Pauline "Eppie" Friedman on July 4, 1918, 9.52 am local time, in Sioux City, Iowa. (source: DAV database) Landers earned a devoted following for her guidance and advice to the perplexed. Her no-nonsense, witty style signaled a departure from the priggish morality that previously dominated the genre. She also won many public service awards for her open discussions of medical issues. Landers was the third of four daughters born to Russian immigrants from Vladivostok. Landers' father, Abraham Friedman, initially made his living selling chickens out of a wagon. A true rags-to-riches story, Friedman would eventually own movie theaters in three states. Landers grew up in Sioux City, where she also attended Morningside College. In 1939, she left school to marry Jules Lederer, a hat salesman. Shortly after, the couple moved to Eau Claire, Wisconsin, where she became involved in local Democratic politics. By 1955, Landers then known as Eppie Lederer had settled in Chicago. Although she enjoyed an affluent lifestyle, the energetic socialite was dissatisfied with mere domestic duties and cast around looking for a project. The local Democratic chieftains would have little to do with her, fearing her staunchly liberal politics.

During the next decade it's going to be television stars. Chip: Television stars? Ann: This is what people are looking at. Sports figures, rock stars, musicians. Chip: I've been hearing about America's return to simple values. What do you make of that? Ann: Chip: Of course. Ann: I'm talking about high rollers like Michael Milken, these big rip-off guys. Chip: Yet he went to jail. Did that teach us a lesson? Ann: I don't know. They still admire him as the guy who made $550 million in one year. Chip: You don't make that much with your column [laugh]. Ann: Well, not this year [doesn't laugh]. Conversation continues with Ann's observations on marriage, consumerism, etc. Chip: Any other thoughts?

Ann Landers died Saturday. She dispensed advice in her daily newspaper column to a whopping 90 million readers, the AP reports But I had to think back to a small blurb I wrote about her six years ago for "Internet Underground" magazine. Ann had been running disturbing letters about horrible experiences readers had on the internet. (Like this one from "Older But Wiser in Bakersfield.") The stage was set for a high-profile rebuke from Senator Patrick Leahy... "As a 55-year-old happily married man for 33 years, I am living proof that the vast majority of us Internet fans use our computers to browse newspapers, see the treasures of the Sistine Chapel, check the weather in Vermont or read the latest Batman...." Landers responded to Leahy, "As an advice columnist...you aren't so hot," and added that "The Internet is tailor-made for con men, the lonely and the bored." The next week she admitted to the L.A. Times that she didn't even own a computer. "I don't have to have a computer to know what's out there," she said.
To be charitable, Ann was at least half-right new internet users do need to be warned about the possibility of scam artists. But searching the internet six years later, I was pleased to discover Ann had later run a second column in which she published reader letters

Ann Landers
Teens: a lost cause or a ray of hope?
Dear Ann Landers: When I read your glowing assessment of today's teen-agers, I decided you are either looking at the world through some mighty powerful rose-colored glasses, or you are completely off your rocker.
Today's American youth are the most stupid, impolite, self-centered people on the planet. They know everything about computers and nothing about history, literature, geography or the arts. Half of them are unable to name their own state capitol. They drive like lunatics, and eat like pigs. Their music is imbecilic and deafening. Most of their so-called art is garbage. Their trademark is four-letter words.
If we are ever in another war, it will have to be fought by men over 25. The 17-to-24-year-olds are spaced out on pot and heavier drugs and could never pass the physical. I don't know where or how this generation lost its way, but it IS lost, and I see no hope for these young people.
A Midwestern Realist
Dear Midwestern: Your off-the-wall, wild-eyed pessimism is depressing, and you have a strangely one-dimensional view of today's youth.
